** The Official OcUK Mechanical Keyboard Thread **

Having just completed my MA dissertation i'm looking to treat myself. I'm thinking along the lines of a new keyboard. It will mainly be used for gaming FPS, RTS and maybe a a little bit of WoW on the side, along with a bit of typing.

I have been using a standard Microsoft Comfort Curve 2000 keyboard for the last four years so I'm guessing that any 'Gaming' keyboard will be a massive improvement over this. I'm tired of getting killed on BF when I hit certain keys in combination.

Price is not to much of an issue, but nothing overly expensive. Noise is not an issue either.

Has anyone got any recommendations?

Can't go wrong with Razer BlackWidow (Ultimate if you have the extra £).

No point getting a keyboard with blue switches just for gaming when brown and red are considered much better depending on your preference for RTS or FPS.

loving this, feels quality throughout, got it when it was TWO for a tenner less, the partial red led backlight is really cool and rare at this pricepoint, also cant believe how heavy it is, doesn't budge.:D

I ended up with the tenkeyless version and love it. For £65 there's really no fault I can find with it. It's my first mechanical keyboard but for a no frills keyboard I can't imagine how it could be improved.

Should have treated yourself before typing your dissertation. Might have made it more bearable! :p

I was thinking of doing that but as I'm not planning on continuing my studies beyond a masters degree at this time I didn't think it was worth the cost of buying a keyboard that was good just for typing and then use it for gaming for most of its life. I did not want to buy one designed for gaming as it would have been an unessary distraction from my work. Plus buying one now serves as a nice reward for getting my work done.

I have seen them in shops, but I'm not sure if I would be better with one with red or brown switches for the reasons above.

One more requirement is that due to space limitations on my desk the length needs to be kept down to the same as my existing keyboard (480 mm)

I'm thinking about maybe this one

Or maybe this one

It's all down to personal preference. I mostly play FPS so the WASD keys get the most use. I tried a Filco brown switch before I got my Blackwidow but didn't really care for it too much. Some say the noise of blues is too loud but personally I like it that way, nice and clicky. ;)

I ordered the CM Storm QuickFire Pro, Can't wait, I've gone through like 2 keyboards the past 2 years, which ain't much but I'm tired of trying to pick one, hopefully this will last me a while. My current one is a logitech and my hand is like a claw having to use it so I get fatigue / pain in my left hand from WASD :(

I was thinking about buy a new keyboard, then I thought I should buy a Black Widow, but saw a review where the guy said he couldn't support his fingers on the buttons while gaming, because the buttons are pressed very easily.

Black switches are what you require if you think it could be a problem.

Received my MX Brown WASD keyboard today. Was a bit iffy when I took it out of the box and pressed the keys, couldn't tell much difference between them and rubber domes. But now that I'm actually typing on them, they feel glorious!

Will post more details later, am busy now! I ordered a blank 39 ISO key set but they sent me laser etched keys by mistake, I'm hoping it won't cost them (or me) too much to fix the order.

Just recently got my self a Qpad Mk-80 with the blue switches the same as the black widow and so far I love it. Typing on it is so comfy and easy, the slight touch of the key to type is amazing. It is taking some getting use to not needing to bottom out the keys and i have to also admit the sound at first was annoying but not i am used to it and when i do type it just reminds me what difference they keyboard actually makes to a normal one. I also game a lot mainly MMO's and a few FPS games and even in gaming i feel a big difference. And as stated it doesn't take much to press the buttons but once your used to it, its effortless to do. I may in the future try other switches but so far for my first mechanical keyboard i am loving it.

Just to end I have been a razer fan boy for years and this is the first time I have ventured from using them and I have to say this Qpad is built 10 times better than any of the razer gear I have/had. 10 out of 10 for Qpad so far. :)

Is it possible to switch the aswd keys on the k90 for white ones? Id love to have rest of the keyboard with black keys and have aswd keys as white!

Anyone know what keyboard that is? Looks quite nice, I did want a das but I'd rather some coloured keys and the one I was going to get was US layout, not sure now :/

I use a cherry evolution stream keyboard. Low profile, fully supportive of multiple key presses and low latency, high production quality and best of all, only costs me £15. :D When my current one breaks no doubt will i be purchasing another.

That's fantastic news!

But what does it have to do with mechanical keyboards?
