*** The Official Playstation 4 (PS4) Thread ***

Whether that's 'true' or not, I think you're mistaken if you think many people are going to consider £400 as 'nothing'.

This isn't the Graphics Card sub-forum, we don't all wipe ourselves with £50 notes :p

£300 - £350 is the sweet spot both the XBox and PS4 should be aiming at.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but this generation costs are down. They are both using low-cost AMD SOCs. Blu-ray drives are vastly cheaper today.

we have already had this discussion, to build a pc with the same spec would cost a lot more than £400, you should read through the rumours thread for more info.

As I'm sure you know, PC games are cheaper. The whole reason the consoles are sold below cost is because they can make that money back via game sales.

So your argument for increasing the console price to cost price is...? Shares in MS, Sony by any chance?

And with control of the 2nd hand market this time around, I don't think either company will be hurting for income.

where did i say increase the price?

i said even at £400 they will be making a loss.

they arent a charity so yes they need to make the money back they lost on making the console.

seriously i give up, go buy a wii for £50

PC's of that spec are not mass produced at the level ps4 and x one will be though. The buying power will be huge. Its something to consider we can't just compare them price wise to a pc.

Can I ask why it bothers you that I would like to buy the PS4 for ~£300?

You seem genuinely upset. Do you feel sorry for Sony?

You're not the only one who does this. But I find it strange that people would want to justify higher prices for items, given that they must also pay those higher prices themselves? You are trying to hurt yourself/all of us?

Or do you feel dirty if you buy something cheap? :p

you do know consoles are usually sold below cost price. so even at £400 they will be making a loss on them, there is no way they are then going to be giving away another £100 on top to everyone.

£400 for a quality piece of hardware is literally nothing.

Evidence of Sony or Microsoft selling consoles below cost price?

Actually, while the PS4 will probably still sell below cost price, the loss isn't expected to be anywhere near what the PS3 brought about.

Unlike PS3, we are not planning a major loss to be incurred with the launch of PS4. At the time we developed PS3, we made a lot of in-house investments to develop the chip – the Cell chip. Development of the chip saw the silicon processing and all the facilities invested by us ourselves.

Yes we have a team working on chip development – but we already have existing technology to incorporate and also product investment and all the facilities will now be invested by our partners, other foundries, so we don’t have to make all the investment in-house.

You want evidence that the PS3 sold at a loss? Take a look at the price of the PS3 at launch then look at the cost of BluRay players at the time. Many people, myself included, went with a PS3 because it was the most cost effective BluRay player on the market and was fairly future proof.

What i dont get is people are happy to spend hundreds on the latest Iphone that does nothing more than the last, yet moan about the price of something that has been improved, does stuff new and doesnt need to be updated every 6/12 months to have the latest.

Agreed. Even at £500 it would offer incredible value for money considering how long console generations last these days.

Bare in mind that a game on average will cost around £40+ so it's reasonable that people won't want to pay quite so much for a console. If the console actually lasted 10 years without breaking then you can't complain. But plenty of phat PS3's and original 360's broke after not long at all.

Still undecided if I should get a PS4 at launch or wait 12 months and get the first revision.

I've had a launch day PS2 and PS3. Both eventually broke and I ended up with a later model

I think launch day price my max limit would be £450.

Currently have a 360, but honestly don't want to continue paying for XBL as it makes me resent the console. As well if Sony continue the PSN+ service they do for PS3 currently, then I will be totally sold and be a Sony boy for the next 8 years.

On the flip side of that I've got an original PS2 and still using a release 60gb PS3 - Although the PS3 sounds like my hoover it's going strong. I can see your attraction to later revisions though.

I've gone and bought a Vita for off screen play, an interested feature I'll be trying to make the most of. Works okay on the PS3 (selected games) so should be cool to see how it's advanced.
