*** The Official Playstation 4 (PS4) Thread ***

All conjecture at the moment, but if they can bring it in around the 400 mark, then I will be happy, that is a fair price that is achievable. The phone argument stacks up well, I spent 500 getting my phone last year and plan to upgrade it in 6 months time, so 400 for something that will last 5yrs isn't so bad.
My only wish at this moment in time is that the eye had full HD capabilities like the kinect, as I think developers will really be able to do some clever stuff this time around. We are just at the beginning of a new tech, and I would have liked Sony to bring something better to the table for futureproofing in a few years time.
Can't wait for E3, think it will be really exciting

Well it’s just as mentioned a place holder price. Although I reckon £425 launch price might not be too far from the mark. £599 is not going to sell as that is too expensive, but due to DDR5 being used £425 might be what you’re looking at.

To be honest, £425 + the cost of a few games at £40 each £45 maybe so that’ll be £515 which makes investing into next gen expensive but remember, these consoles last into 5 or more years.

PS3 isn’t even anywhere near end of life yet if you think about it. PS3 has some nice exclusives up and coming and those who purchased their console back when released and have not upgraded to a slimmer model, then the price they paid at launch has more then paid for itself if they’ve used their console regular.

I’d be happy to pay £500 for a new games console, controller, and two next gen games as that is going to provide me plenty of longterm value with a games console. I’ve not used my PS3 as much as I could have, but I know I’ve had my value from the machine, including the PS+ sub I’ve had on and off over the past few years since PS+ services started.

I paid a lot for the ps3 at launch as u also had to buy a sony game or 2 with it but it lasted me til just a month or so back and never had a problem with it so not bad imo

I think psychologically it has to be cheaper than the PS3 launch price, as a generalisation I think the buying public felt it was too expensive but understood it had non-standard parts like Cell and BD which significantly increased the cost, the PS4 in that respect, nothing other than say the PS Eye (which in itself is seen as an technologically inferior product to Kinect and something only a subset of customers want to pay for as standard) seems 'non-standard' so I think anything over £399 is gonna be very hard to swallow or to market...

The PS Eye is maybe inferior to the kinect however least it’s not integral to the system and you can chose to plug it in or not.

£425 is perhaps the absolute max they could hope to get away with in all honesty, DDR5 is more expensive sadly the general buying public won’t understand this, what will you would hope sell the PS4 is Sony Exclusives.

Its too early I guess to speculate on pricing. Whatever happens I’m more then likely going down the Sony route. I just cannot think how I’d ever use the features of the xbox one other then gaming, whereas the Sony machine is from all accounts a gaming machine with extras if you want it.

I don’t like some of MS design ideas for xbox one, I most certainly do not like the idea of this voice activation kinect no matter how advanced the tech might be. I just want to plug into my TV, plug a gamepad in, play a few games and then maybe use the console to watch a movie.. That is it.

It won't be £425. The PS3 was £425/$599 at launch. Sony have already said that it will not be as expensive as PS3 was at launch so i really don't think there is anything to worry about here.

Isn't Zavvi still doing the pre-order guarantee on the £399 price for the PS4? If people are that concerned about it going over that mark they could always pre-order it there and have some piece of mind :p

Edit: Wow, Amazon finally has it listed now but for £599.99...

Yes, £399 from Zavvi, £599 Amazon. Retailers simply do not know but if its more then £399 then Zavvi are out of pocket.

I might concede on this one, its looking to be £399 which TBH I'd be happy to pay that for a next gen console.. I'm fairly sure I paid this for my first PS3.

Can I ask why it bothers you that I would like to buy the PS4 for ~£300?

You seem genuinely upset. Do you feel sorry for Sony?

You're not the only one who does this. But I find it strange that people would want to justify higher prices for items, given that they must also pay those higher prices themselves? You are trying to hurt yourself/all of us?

Or do you feel dirty if you buy something cheap? :p

i would love to get a PS4 for free, but realistically speaking it isn't going to be possible.

people seem to want everything these days at a totally unrealistic price. the consoles are already sold at a loss. imo you are already getting a great deal if you buy something for less than what it cost to make, it's extremely unrealistic to then go and ask the company to literally chop a limb off by wishing them into selling at a HUGE loss.

take the HP touchpad, they were being sold at a HUGE loss and sold like they were the greatest thing ever made but in reality they were decent tablets with an unsupported OS and the mod community hasn't achieved anywhere near a full stable android experience. if people think they are getting a bargain they will literally buy anything even if they do not need it, but for some reason when it comes to consoles they seem to think they are overpriced even when sold at a significant loss. its the deal mentality, overprice something at £500 then slash £400 off and it will sell even if it isn't needed or not even that good, but underprice something at £400 and people think it is overpriced because physically the price has not been slashed but set so.

so i do not see why people think £400 is overpriced especially since it's usually something that gets regular use, provides entertainment and should last 5-10 years.

i would love to get a Nexus 5 for £100, but I have to be realistic and know it will be priced around £300 and I am therefore willing to pay up to £350 for it. again the nexus devices are another device not sold for profit, yet they sell like hot cakes, this seems to just be a console mentality. i dont understand why people think something sold at a loss is too expensive and should be made even cheaper.

Yep you’ll be able to use your existing PSN account, now your PSN games. That’ll be a whole other discussion.

Hopefully, Sony pulls something out with their cloud based gaming they’ve got planned to allow you to play some of the games I’ve myself got on PSN.

Zen pinball and Wipeout HD will be very much missed if I removed my PS3 and put a PS4 in its place..

Still dubious about Gaikai but it would be pretty awesome if your existing PS+ stuff could still be played through it on the PS4. Have to wait and see I guess.

i have never seen BC as a problem tbh, i have never ever wanted to play old games on a new gen console.

when i bought a ps2, i played ps2 games funnily enough even though it was BC.

when i bought a launch ps3, i played ps3 games again funnily enough even though it was BC.

old games never age well imo, and once you have played them it's on to the new ones.

if it is such a big issue then surely you would just keep your ps3 than get rid of it?

I played 3 Xbox games on my 360 (SSX 3, JSRF and Halo 2) I can't see myself really needing to playing old games on next gen, I can always just use my old console for that.

I've always thought backwards compatibility is one of those things that gets blown way out of proportion for its actual use.

My point was mainly to do with continuing with your PS+ sub and having the games that you'd aquired digitally being available to you via Gaikai. Probably wishful thinking on my part but you never know. :)

Anyone considered once internet connections are sound enough that Sony might extend the life of the PS4 by supporting cloud gaming? Sony havent invested in Gaikai just to do BC so at some point theyll be looking forward rather than backwards with it - unreasonable to think it would be within the PS4s life cycle?

Outside of the PS brand what else could Gaikai be used for? Could they really consider 'platformless' gaming post-PS4?
