Deliberate ploy to stop people fitting the slim anniversary covers to a pro I think.
Would they honestly care that much about a few thousand consoles that they would increase the production costs and having to stock 2 different SKU's of plates? Just seems very wierd that the plates are the same physical size, but have the attachment hooks in different locations.

What is the easiest way to make the switch from a PS5 to a PS5 Pro? I've PS Plus so I presume I simply login on the Pro and it will sync saves and I can download digital games and install disc based ones (I've got a drive)

Can I remove the NVME drive from the PS5 and install it in the Pro, or will it require a reformat to use it?

As you said, if you have Plus your saves are sync across. Yes you can just transfer your SSD across without formating.

You can also do a transfer over lan from console to console but that takes longer.

That's what I intend to do, do a transfer from PS5 to PS5 Pro via Ethernet, shouldn't be to bad if it allows the gigabit speeds, otherwise backup to HDD and copy back to Pro.

My obstinance is beginning to crack. I've yet to buy BG3 but with the PS5 Pro patch announced, this might be the cliff I jump off to get on board. Previously, GTA6 was to be that moment but but but ... no must stay strong!
Many of us have already folded and pre-ordered the Pro, give in and join us then we can all complain about how much we paid for this upgrade whilst playing Remasters of the games we've completed several times already :D. But at least pretty GFX at 60FPS.........

I've managed to hold out so far and it's not only because of the whole optical drive situation. It's also partly because I still haven't seen anything extraordinary enough to make me truly want one for reasons other than FOMO (which, I admit, I feel a bit and I still might give in to it because I'm stupid enough to do so).

I guess I'm just not that interested in seeing slightly sharper versions of games I've already played to death and that already look and run very well. There will be nothing transformative about it. Of course, there are improvements to be made in all of them but it's not like they desperately need it. They look very good for the hardware. I'm currently playing through TLoU1 and not even for a second do I think "this should look and run better".

The only exception is Rebirth because Squeenix dropped the ball.

Yeah, it's nice that I can play a sharper version of Horizon for 700 quid but no thanks, you have to work a bit harder. It's easy to take games that have already performed very well at 60fps and make them look better with AI upscaling and 40% more GPU grunt.

The Pro needs to show that it can handle games that were a problem for the base console and deliver either 60fps or markedly better IQ, preferably both.

It's those that I'm waiting for. AW2, SH2, Wukong and the upcoming titles that might be tough for the PS5 (and even older titles like Elder Ring). So far, only AW2's been shown and it's still locked to 30fps with RT settings reportedly below the lowest available on PC and the performance mode, while better overall, is not entirely consistent IQ-wise as per Digital Foundry.

PSSR will do most of the work here in reality, the raster uplift is still nowhere near enough to produce significantly better visuals when the devs still have to take the base PS5 into account and I fear the whole Pro enhancement will devolve into "let's just slap on PSSR and call it a day" over time because, let's face it, the new upscalling tech is the saving grace of the console, not the hardware itself.

TL;DR: If the Pro is able to make a problematic game go from a "**** experience to a good experience", then I'm 100% on board, if it's just "**** experience to a bit less **** experience", then I guess I'm out.

Damn you @Amatsubu you almost make me ashamed of myself. And I really do get what you are saying which makes a lot of sense but coming from a PC gamer background I'm far to use to high framerate graphics with settings maxed or near maxed out, so the chance of playing some of the new console games at a slightly higher FPS with improvements to image quality appeals to me. What likely makes it worse is that since getting my PS5 the only game I've really played on it is Horizon Forbidden West, the other games GoW2, FF16 I've not really touched and instead I've reverted to playing games like Elden Ring on the PC, I even brough Horizon Forbidden West on the PC specifically because of the higher image quality/frame rates.

This said, I fully intend to replay TLoU Pt1/Pt2 on the Pro so I can enjoy them in all their glory on a larger screen and finally get around to playing GoW2.

Don't worry, I'm still on the fence but not opposed to anyone wanting to grab it on release, I understand the appeal of new tech and I love the idea of PSSR (in fact, a solid AI upscaler was something I felt the base console severely lacked). I am (or was) a PC gamer as well but that actually doesn't helpe because my measly 4070 will most likely outperform the Pro in virtually any game given that it's better at RT and also has DLSS + Framegen so that's also why I'm extra-hesitant. Can't imagine why you're getting it with a 4090, just hook that up to a TV and you'll murder the Pro in ANYTHING.

As I've said, my stance is just that they haven't shown nearly enough to really make it worthwhile, they're just riding on older games getting put through PSSR and embellished with some rather basic RT. So far, we're practically paying 700 quid for a machine-learning upscaler without a disc drive or even a stand, as harsh as it sounds because you've seen how easily that extra GPU grunt can be brought back to 30fps with just basic RT reflections in Alan Wake and that's WITH PSSR. I guess it just shows how easy it is to flog us stuff regardless of the price or actual features, as even I myself, knowing there's nothing concrete yet about the titles that truly matter when it comes to performance, wanted to buy it on release even without a drive. There's a hilarious vid on YT from one of Polish content creators, bloke bashes the Pro like there's no tomorrow and then a week later uploads a video saying he bought one in the end and justifying it in every way possible:P

In those games that run really well on base PS5 like TLoU, I think you'd need to have them side by side to really appreciate the difference, even though they do look better, just not 700 quid better and I personally struggle to think of any game that would make you feel that you NEED it precisely on release without knowing how the worst offenders will run or if they'll even be enhanced in the first place but to each their own.

This thing desperately needs new games and games that truly show off the difference at that, not unnecessary remasters for the umpteenth time. Show me how a game like SH2 runs on it that suffers from stuttering and horrible image and reflection quality in perf mode, or Wukong that has so much input lag due to FSR frame gen that you can make tea while waiting for the game to register your commands.

If it's a night-and-day difference, I'll buy it immediately.

Good news for me is that I don’t own a PC so this is a nice upgrade for me. Other than the Switch which these days only gets used on long journeys and holidays the PS5 is my go to place for playing games so I am (almost - jeez at least put a stand on it) happy to pay a premium for the upgrade.

Haven't owned a gaming PC for 2 decades. Not certain what PSSR/FSR is. Some of them aren't remasters for me as I never played them the 1st time round.

It's 6 days away and I paid a non refundable deposit of 160EUR. Can't cancel my purchase now, no matter how long an essay I read in this thread, regardless of how many acronyms are used in it.

I'll probably be crying on Friday when I can't see the difference from the original PS5, and then it dawns on me that i'm missing an optical drive, and my PS5 Pro falls over due to no stand.
