**** The Official Prometheus Spoiler Discussion Thread ****

Wasn't it David who saved Shaw from the storm? If so then it's likely that it was in the story to show that he already knew he needed her to get impregnated (otherwise why save her). So David knows more about this than meets the eye.

this is why I liked Prometheus

it encourages discussion and theories and speculation about plot points and meanings

just like Blade Runner does! adds more depth to a film rather than all being obvious

Another thing I keep pondering on is the religious undertone. Shaw was constantly being shown as believing and carried a cross. There were references to "about 2000 years ago" and a virgin birth (she couldnt have kids)... and one other thing... How many people confronted the Engineer? Was it 3 or more? The father, his son (David) and the Holy Ghost?

I'm guessing thats why they were going to destroy us. They saw the birth of Christianity, and said "Get out of here, get to da choppa!" and "Nuke it from orbit."

From imdb: "a theory being circulated is that David masterminded most of the happenings in the story. The military facility is not a military facility but a laboratory, the aliens were never intent on killing us, and david simply said something alarming to the alien and also manipulated a very intelligent race in the process. David said some cryptic things like dont children want their parents dead and why would you want to know why your creator wants to kill you. This hints to the fact that he wants to kills his creators, the humans, and when he tricks the engineer into setting course for earth (i believe he reprogrammed the course of the ship towards earth when fiddling with the holographic map, although it is debatable whether that is possible during a ship log playback) to destroy us, he assumes wrongly the humans wont question why their creator want them dead."

Some interesting points, I think some answers can be found in decyphering davids dialogue. Perhaps he was mis programed?

Pretty much anything that's wrong with the film can be put down to the writers. What I've seen of their other works have been completely terrible, so it's disappointing that Scott gave them such a big hand in what is probably his biggest film in decades. I hope he realises the errors of his ways if they are to make any sequels.

It's absolutely stunning to look at with superb art-design, highly ambitious in its concept (as any good SF should be), has great acting from all of the main cast and some scenes that really fill you with awe. It's just a shame that the dialogue is absolutely dreadful, and any of the ambiguity around the story / universe seems to have drawn more on Lindelof's "success" with Lost than a creative choice by Scott - towards the end of that God-awful show they were just leaving questions unanswered and creating new mysteries for the sake of it, and it seemed like that was the case in parts of this film too.

I think the longer time passes, more people will recognise this film as a flawed masterpiece rather than a massive letdown. Not to say its critics are wrong, but a lot of the backlash seems really excessive to me, and I think the ridiculously high hopes some people had for this film are responsible for how much they feel disappointed. From what I saw, I'd say it has a lot more in common with films like Blade Runner, 2001, or even the Star Trek films, than any of the Alien franchise, so perhaps it was a case of people not getting anything like they expected, and on subsequent watches we won't be as surprised as on the first viewing.

I don't think we should be attempting to retroactively fix bad writing by offering alternate explanations of events. The verisimilitude in this film is never preserved, meaning there are no real hints towards the points you've quoted. Even so, if it was all masterminded by an android there's still a staggering lack of internal narrative consistency in the film.

did anyone else find holloways attitude towards david (because he was an android) a little strange for a person who was supposed to be so open to possibilities?

Just like there were no hints in Alien of who the space jockey was... it didn't stop people speculating all this time since 1979!

I thought that interplay between the two was amazing. And David genuinely wasn't taking it the wrong way either.

If you notice he asks Holloway "what would you be wiling to do? to find your answers..." and he replies "Anything!". At this point David then proceeds to spike his drink with the black goo. If Holloway hadn't answered so affirmatively then I really doubt David would have done it.

When Holloway takes the mick about him wearing a suit, it did seem a little odd. Sure "looking" human is one reason David does it. But surely the other is simply to do with quarantine protocols? Otherwise David would be touching things which he might later then transfer to people or objects back on the ship!

Ridley Scott got confused and added to much driod v human v alien carp, this is alien not blade runner

black goo kills aliens but makes worms monsters? ok why? no time next random scene please

worms kill people and dont impregnate?

black goo kills aliens, makes worm monsters and makes humans into madmen (if you get splashed with it, if you ingeste it it makes you a weak old man with eye worms), ok that does not seem right, explain? nope guess that please

ok we got a few specimens here (one lying dead on the floor of the ship) lets examine? nope would reveal too much wait 3-5 years for next film please

shaw gets rid of an embryo, good scene, got anymore? nope please forget that happened please ever other character has

captain sits on his arse all film long then starts spouting large reveals, "its a weapons facility" whateva mate you have not even left the ship, how does he know? guess this please

weylands on the ship all along, shocker, not really, do i care? noooo

so im left with wanting to know more about the story/film i just paid to see, is that a good or bad thing?

Do I take what randoms on the net suggest? do I wait for the next film? Will it get any better will I know more?

Look what you did to my brain Ridley

but the scene just before he spikes his drink, he said something quite cutting, along the lines of ''oh no wait, i forget, you don't have emotions''. would a free thinking person, such as someone who dedicates their life to finding carvings, engravings etc and also shows compassion for shaw's inability to create human life, have such an attitude towards an android? i doubt it.

shaw didn't seem to respect him either until he saved them from the storm.

i was always of the feeling that any scientist would respect an android, purely because of the scientific steps required to create an android. if you're not going to respect something created like this, why create it?

I saw this on Friday, was a bit disappointed (it does look good as a plus point) Its merely average as a film, the only highlight for me was that I snuck a four pack of stella into the cinema.

David is the only one who knows the truth of the facility and what it's purpose is but reveals it to no-one, not even the old man. Everything he does suggests he's got a massive grudge against humanity. He also infects the only other guy that might have understood anything he was going to say to the aliens.

The only glaring thing for me is it seems there was 5minutes cut from after they kill the guy that gets infected and heads back and goes beserk. This was the perfect oppurtunity to set up an autopsy to determine the bio weapon and so on and would then fall neatly into the Captain suddenly declaring that the place is a weapons facility.

I also didnt like the 3-d animation of the crew running, was that like space CCTV? Recorded footage, seemed a bit random and out of place.

That and the fact that the key to this massive spaceship, is a ****ing flute.
