**** The Official Prometheus Spoiler Discussion Thread ****

I'd be interested to know what hola_adios thinks of the following films:

2001 Space Odyssey
District 9
Event Horizon
Tron Legacy
Moon
Pitch Black
The Fifth Element
Stargate
Mission To Mars
Contact
Serenity
Avatar

Haven't seen The Arrival

Imo, not all of them, but at least half.
I would put Prometheus in under the 5th Element personally.
Off topic, but that's my order

i thought these:

Pitch Black
Contact
Stargate
Event Horizon
Serenity
Tron Legacy
2001 Space Odyssey
Moon
The Fifth Element
District 9

were great.

either haven't seen or dislike the others.

anyway, why are people getting so wound up about other people liking/disliking the film? i certainly thought it was fun, intriguing etc. just enjoy it for what it is instead of getting enraged by it

Is Prometheus worse than all of these?

i think its better than a few of those, but that doesn't make it good :p

Just got back from seeing this and I'm quite confused about a few things. I'll read the thread from the start instead of most of the rubbish on the last page (arguing) and see if what I'd like to ask has been answered though!

After digesting it all for a few days......I still don't know what to think about this movie. Great ideas, poor execution would sum it up for me I guess. I really expected better of RS. He obviously got caught up in the big ideas and forgot the basics of making a good movie. I mean, I can forgive a lot of the so-called plot holes and questionable logic (it's science FICTION after all), but some of it was technically bad....there's no two ways about it....and that shocked me considering who directed it.

Why so shocked? RS isn't totally godlike. It wouldn't be the first time he messed up a theatrical cut either. Hold out for the BluRay, it should be much better.

He's already said the theatrical version is the directors cut, and that the deleted scenes will just be separate on the disc :( Granted, he might change his mind...

Watched this yesterday and got a bit of a mundane query.

Can somebody explain what the holograms/ghosts were all about, I didn't fully understand them? At first I thought they were either recordings of something that individuals had previously done (e.g. showing people running away from a threat, using the flute/pilot seat etc), or possibly showing what characters would do in the future. But other than serving to educate David on what to do in the pilot seat I wasn't really sure on their purpose or what their true origin was.

edit: Overall feelings about the film weren't great, slow to start but picked up a bit. I didn't like the female lead and don't have particular desire to see any sequels. I think if it wasn't for the Alien connection, I probably wouldn't have watched it.

That's the point exactly: they were a thin plot device to enable certain parts of the script, and to fill in some otherwise unknown back story. More of the same lazy script writing which largely destroyed the film. Gave the director more time for SFX.

I thought they were some kind of security recordings.

If they had found a control panel, and were able to watch video footage of these events, would people really be asking the same questions about their "purpose" or "true origin"?

Why do people need to have everything spelled out for them in films? You know as much as the crew did (except David).

Of all the things that were supposedly wrong with this film the hologram "CCTV" style recordings were definitely not one of them. It's not hard to believe that an alien WMD silo and spacecraft would have such a system.

It's sci-fi! Have people forgotten how to actually watch sci-fi these days? Been too dumbed down in recent years admittedly by dross like the Matrix sequels, Starwars prequels and Transformers.

I enjoyed this but one bit that REALLY annoyed me was when fifields helmet cam is outside the ship. Why on earth would the captain who's ship is on an unknown world think just opening up the ship when they already know this guy is DEAD is a good idea? For someone who comes across as relatively smart he ain't half dumb at that point.

The other thing which annoyed me was the suit cams. We're 100 years into the future, can build a space craft that can travel to another sun and we still can't do better than 5mega pixel cameras?

The camera looks to be POV HD which is a rather nice bit of kit actually!

It's nice now, but 100 years in the future? Also the images were given the 'look it's remote video so it must be grainy' effect which just made me go 'whyyyyy!'

And I suppose you think the same about that sequence in the original Alien? When you first see the Alien ship through the shaky cam?

That is a fantastic, eery scene.

Nice roll eyes you've got there pal.

In 1979 that effect made sense based on technology then and that something like that was forward thinking for its time. It also, like you said made it eery. In this film? It did none of that. With all their advanced technology and the clear visuals from the ships cameras, all they could muster was some grainy footage.

So you want the video feed from an earlier time period, to be better quality?

I want the video feed to be reasonably accurate to the rate of technological progression we have seen in our real-life time. I'm sure you'll go 'yeah but RS was going for continuity' but I doubt that was it at all.

I could get into all sorts of other issues when it comes to sci-fi and poorly executed technological advancements (they're using some pretty weak ass torches in the film too) but that's another argument.

If Ridley is too old to helm the suggested follow-ups, do you think they wouild go ahead? If so, who would you like to see take on the project?
