But none of that justifies why David would make that decision in the first place. It's not within his remit.
Weyland told him to "try harder". It was one of the most obvious pieces in the film!

Clearly the Aliens saga ignores the whole Isaac Asimov line of robotic law. I didnt think it was obvious he would do that unless we suppose its never a big deal either way

Alien has already established that the androids do what the Company tells them to. As silversurfer says, no Asimov's First Law of Robotics here.
But why does the company want David to infect someone? And how do they even know what the black gunk is or what it does? It's just a wild stab in the dark.
they need answer. the android needs a subject and takes his shot. i didn't see anything wrong with that part of the film really.
i agree - thats one of the least stupid things in the film - plenty more to chose from.
Why does David elect to test the effects of goo on one of the only two people the entire mission potentially depends on? There is a 10+ strong, completely disposable, crew just next door. It is so disposable, we don't even know what happened to some of them after their brief appearances. But David (or Wayland) picks one of the only two scientists that know anything about anything in this mission to save his master.
