**** The Official Prometheus Spoiler Discussion Thread ****

Nah, give the sequel to James Cameron, he can't do any worse ;) And after the sheer boredom that was Prometheus, I need a slightly more exciting film this time round.

I have that film sat here on my desk; have yet to watch it. But Cameron did Aliens, so he can't be all bad ;)

My take on some elements are as follows:

The black liquid transforms the worms into the larger aggressive snakes. It also transformed Fifield into an aggressive killer. This was consistent and the same seemed to be happening to Holloway before he was torched.

Holloway was deliberately infected by David potentially at the request of Weyland. Weyland was in search of a cure to his mortality and was happy to risk Holloway to test the material they found. David's choice of target was influenced as a result of his feelings for Shaw (He was stalking her dreams).

I was annoyed by the following:

A biologist who could not recognise a snake acting very much like a cobra.

There was little that made me care about any of the deaths. There was so little character development.

If you're going to imply that Theron gets it on with the captain, show some skin.

The facehugger did not need to be absolutely enormous.

There was more that grated me but those were some of the main issues.

I think the most interesting thing about Prometheus when compared to Aliens is that James Cameron is also a pretty poor writer, and Aliens only really succeeds on the strength of the plot and the pure adrenaline rush of the film as an action movie, as opposed to one with any real claim to horror or suspense (or, to be more specific, the suspense relies on ACTION as opposed to character, and thus plays to Cameron's directorial strengths).

Prometheus, as discussed at length, suffers from a very poor script but you really see the gulf in quality between the two different styles of film: Cameron never makes films which rely on a great deal of suspense or character, Ridley Scott does and Damon Lindelof lets him down in that regard. Lindelof's script is outpaced by the sheer quality of Scott's director and own approach to character.

It makes them aggressive, but also lets them impregnate their partners with an embryo that grows into a squid, which then finds a host to impregnate, which then.... /head explodes.

Let's compare with the simpler life cycle in Alien:

egg -> facehugger -> host impregnation -> gestation and birth of Xeno

now Prometheus:

liquid -> infected creature -> mates with infected creature's mate -> squid-hugger -> host impregnation -> gestation and birth of Xeno.

Hands up who find the second life cycle a bit contrived?

P.S. what was the result of the "snake" creature putting it's hoo ha dilly in the guys mouth? I'm guessing that just transmits the aggression boosting fluid? No impregnation involved, no embryo, just a more hostile zombie creature?

It just straight up killed mr Bio guy didn't it? He was just a corpse and nothing ever happened with him. Or have I miss-understood your question? :p

Maybe I missed something, but how did all the human races know to make pictures of the location of the engineers?

Not even location of home world of Engineers, but just the system where they had their secret lab with couple of bunkers.

how can a geologist get lost wtf. this does not make sense.
he is a geologist and cant find his way out

Especially that he was in charge of the mapping "puppies" and in contact with them at all times.

As others pointed out, it also creates a question who was driving the RTO1 transporter back to the ship in front of two scooters?

Somewhere, Ridley Scott is reading these forums and thinking, "Yes, yes, there are so many loose ends and they all want answers to the deep questions I have asked."

Sadly, we're asking questions because the film itself lacks any logical coherence. We're trying to unscramble the mess of a script that really doesn't warrant the attention and investigation it is getting all over the web.

Questions are being asked because the plot of full of holes, not because Scott has cleverly omitted some details of his fantastically deep plot. :(
