***The Official Q6600 Overclocking Thread ***

Dont forget - new CPU too ;)

Is that 1.68vcore ?

It's 1.62 in bios.

But with the Abit P35 I could pump 1.7v through it and one core would still fail.

I will drop the vcore down to the sweet spot and I'm not concerned for temps they are well under control :)

But 4ghz prime run would be nice.

I know it wasn't the chip.

The reason I ask is this:

That's prime 95 running threads on all cores. I am on water, but I thought it'd be hotter then that?

I know the overclock is small but still?

Sounds about right for stock volts, I'm assuming you haven't had to increase Vcore yet as you should get plenty more yet on stock under water.

I set VCore to 1.4V mate. Tried 1.5 initially and 3.5GHz but it kept halting on BIOS where the CPU info comes up. So I'm doing it the hard way now.

Q6600, EVGA 680, Crucial Ballistix 2GB DDR2 PC2-5300C3. Watercooled CPU and GTX.

Current settings:

mem-7.jpg

VFSB @ 1.5V
VCore @ 1.5V
Mem @ 2.2V
All others 0.1V above what it puts on auto.

Current temps under Prime 95:

I'm sure I can hit more but Prime keeps failing on the rounding error. I'm unsure about putting more V into anything! Help! Any settings I should change in the BIOS etc. I'll do the memory after I find max CPU frequency.

Any help greatly appreciated.

OK this is where I'm at now:

I think I'm pretty much at the limit of what it can do. Can get a higher clock but Prime fails. I'm wanting to get the air out of my water loop as that should help matters but I'm struggling.

Any comments welcome.

Those temps do seem high for water.

Did you bleed the system properly?

Well I 7V modded the pump and it's sorted the horrible noise and slush that was being created in the reservoir. But I'll be honest here and say that I'm a complete newb to watercooling so I have no idea if there is still too much air in the system or not. If I turn the PC off then I can see a fair amount of bubbles which I can get into the rad if I tilt the case. Here's a pic of my loop so you can see how it's set up:

Any advise on how to bleed it properly would be greatly appreciate.

Yes the loop is secure mate. I'll check the block seating in the morning as I've had some beverages. I think I might have used a little too much compound. Also thinking about lapping the CPU. How do you mean listen to it btw?

EDIT my GTX is idleing at 40 and only mid 50 under load so I'm deffo going to re-seat the CPU block.

Current idle temps are 35-40 for the CPU at 3.65, under Prime just under 70.

I'm going to re-seat it now and see where I get.

How good is the Coolermaser compound? Better then the Noctua stuff?

EDIT

Just reseated the CPU block and used the Noctua compound. When I took it off I could see that there were many little bubbles on the block and CPU which means air gaps right?

Anyway, put it back on with a tiny drop. Then I took the top of the res and I have been tilting and rocking the whole case and a fair amount of bubbles reached the res coming down from the rad. Once this stopped I left the case standing, put some more fluid in the res and repeated. The fluid is now about 0.5cm below the top of the res, and I can see tiny tiny bubbles making there way down from the rad again. The res is now open while I'm waiting and keeping an eye on it.

Have I done the right thing? Deffo getting some sand paper and lapping the CPU as there's as much as 10 deg diff between the cores on full load. Temps have now dropped by about 5-7 degrees on average.

Whats the verdict on the Q6600 then?

Reason i ask is that i think my E6300 has died and so i'm looking for a new processor. I had my e6300@3GHz. I'm just wondering if its worth getting a Q6600 and getting around 3Ghz or spend an extra tenner and get the E6850 and get probably 3.5ghz on air. (tuniq tower)
