***The Official Q6600 Overclocking Thread ***

How are the Q6700s doing in terms of overclocking? Since I'm on a 680i, I can't use Yorkfield, so I was thinking that a Q6700 or Q6600 might be the best option.

Obviously the G0 stepping Q6600s are great overclockers. Is there an equivalent stepping for the Q6700s? I figure that the 10x multiplier would be good for getting me up to 4Ghz on 400mhz FSB. A fairly easy overclock I'd imagine!

Update:

Prime95 failed. Had to raise Vcore (I forgot I had lowered it). Been Priming for 3 hours stable now, prob keep it going overnight for a proper test.
I noticed with a Vcore of 1.425, my temps peaked at 67'C so I certainly won't be taking it any further than 3.3 for now. I think it's a decent overclock to say Im on Air, on an Arctic Freezer. Next step is to bring the RAM timings down a bit.
Happy chappy.

upto 3.8ghz 1.45v bios 8hrs of prime so far

maximus board is killer

Going to be oc'ing a PC for my friend, he has:

Q6600 SLACR
Asus Maximum Formula x38
Asus Silent Knight II CPU Cooler

What OC should i expect from this setup? (was going to aim for 400x8)

And any tips for this board?

This is the second board it's been in and had more or less the same result. I have tried just about every setting in this boards bios, played with the bewildering array of voltage options, even tried everything up to 500 fsb (dropped the multiplier to 6x) but it will not budge past 400. It's a real shame because like i said already, 3.6ghz was so easy, the temps are really low and i feel like if it could budge past this wall it couls offer so much more. If you have any ideas i would be more than willing to give them a try.

We have progress. :D

I was reading the huge P5E thread on the XS forums and a lot of the guys post their bios settings. I used the same settings as one of the guys and am now at a very stable 3.8ghz, 24 hours prime. Temps are 51/52/54/55 under load in prime which is pretty good. It appears that the terrible Vdroop on this board was my problem. I have now set it to 1.66875v vcore in the bios and set it to 9x422 (3800mhz) along with some other voltage tweaking (there are tons of settings on this board). The vdroop drops the voltage to 1.52v vcore under load  which would appear to have been my problem. Asus really has to fix load calibration on the X38 boards. I also must do the pencil mod. Not finished yet. Going for 4ghz next. :D

400x8 on a Maximus would be a waste. It's capable of so much more than that. Save some money and get a P5E which is a Maximus with some bits missing. Still the same board, bios and huge clocking ability. There are some excellent threads over on the XS forums:-

So far, so good.

3.2Ghz on Air in an Antec 900, gave it 1.3Volts as it was failing prime on the stock. Hopefully can bring this down a little and get some longer prime tests in.

Update - 3.4 @ 1.4v, Overnight Pirme running for pics.

Trying to work out a 5-6 Degree difference in core temp bewteen cores 0/1 and 2/3. The retaining clip which clamps down felt a bit tight, but having never put in a 775 C2D before just assumed it was normal. Are they tight? Eg, the retention clip is ever so slightly curved to apply pressure?

just got my G0 and new gigabyte DS3R board.

Primed overnight 8hr @ 3ghz no probs - however the board does seem to have a large vdroop. set voltage to 1.35v in bios but under full load droops to 1.28v.

Will be going for more later and overnight again.
