***The Official Q6600 Overclocking Thread ***

I've never overclocked before, I'm now looking at the clock of 2.4ghz and wishing it was 3ghz, can anyone do a quick walk through guide of how to do this please?, as I'm a bit of an old fanny and I don't know what I'm doing:o:(

Well the easiest thing would be to read through a few pages from this thread. you should find all you need. 3ghz is easy to get even on stock cooler. ( you ll be flying with yours) ;)

so
- Get CoreTemp, CPU-Z, orthos or prime to test clocks are stable.
- check out the mobo section and see if there is a thread for your Gigabyte P35 if you need to know what everything does bios wise.
- Disable the speed stepping features in the bios. (gone blank for their 2 names right now.)

gtg, will finish post latter

cheers, I've read some but its a massive thread and dissolves into a bit of a mongfest at places;)

I've read some of the beginners overclocking thread in the actual forum, its clear as mud to me, I must be thick.:o:(

The VID on my Q6600 is 1.325v...

I'm guessing from looking around this is as pants as it gets and would be better off shifting it for a lower VID version. As in my chances are high that I wouldn't get one this bad again?

I got 3.4Ghz out of it with 1.41v on a Scythe Infinity air cooler?

Is that bad\good for that VID voltage? Should I get rid and hope for one that will do 3.6-3.8Ghz?

Thanks, :)

yup same as mine - a bit pants

that said although I need lots of VCore for 3.6 gig - temps aren't too bad

1.48 actual under load (1.565 bios) for 3.6 gig for mine

same VID, 1.325v.

i managed 3.4Ghz with 1.45v actual (after Vdroop)
so i guess you are doing good.

will be testing 3.6Ghz soon, may need as high as 1.5v actual for 3.6Ghz. but at 3.4Ghz, im nearing 70c. so i will either need to lap my TRUE120 or just get a new q6600.

I've got mine at 400 x 8 = 3.2 at the mo, VID is 1.2625, actual in CPU-Z is 1.248, BIOS is 1.3, just primed it for 2+ hours, temps get up to 63, 61, 61, 63.

Think I'm going to stick at this for a while :)

In answer to the post a few above, easiest way to overclock is set the FSB to 333, multiplier to 9, PCI-E freqency to 100 or 101 and RAM multiplier to something that your RAM can cope with and bam you'll be at 3Ghz.

I get to 73C with my Freezer 7 - but only with Prime95

all other applications - never seen above 61-62C

tbh I was going to change it for a `120 Ultra Extreme - but since the chip is stable - so what if its a bit hot ?

Yeah shame really, I'm getting around 200mhz less than my expecationgs to be honest. Was hopeing for an easy 3.4ghz with 3.6ghz with abit of fussing around...at 3.42ghz now with another increase in the vcore (cpuz showing 1.416)...

Trouble is, above 3.2Ghz (quad core version of prime 95) prime doesn't just fail, I get a reboot instead

Is this normal?

Temps have gone up to a max of 69c when I had it at 3.47Ghz (went out for couple of house, came back and the mouse had frozen, prime doing small FFTs was at 64kb by that point, so I guess it had been doing its buisness for about 2 hours before the mouse froze)....

Looks like its going to be a timely process getting any more out of it and finding out if its reliable or not

I dunno, do you peeps thing I could get 3.5Ghz out of this chip by the sound of these reboots and whatnot or is this normal\just that I'm on the edge of its maximum...

Really can't see it getting to 3.6Ghz though thats for sure....

....Ahhhh, the joy of getting a new chip and then the dissapointment when you reach a wall you weren't expecting quite so soon. Its always like this with overclocking stuff though I've found in the past...

...I prolly would have felt the same way even if it had made 3.6Ghz and I wanted 3.8!!!!

Still....Encodes video like doodoo off a shovel compared to me old [email protected] not quite fast enough ;)

I dunno, the max thermal recommendation in degrees c from intel is 71c. I suspect after that there is the potential for physical permanent damage to the chip. Lots of people are happy to go up to a max of 70c but absolutely won't let the chip go over that...

I'd invest in a decent cooler before trying anymore to be honest, but each to their own :) (EDIT - no offense, I know thats quite a good cooler but up there with the top end air ones)

I might up me vcore abit more in the end myself and go into the 70s but best play some games and get some use out of it first lol :p

That just means your system isn’t remotely stable, my P5K Premium does exactly the same. It’s so frustrating but it simply means your cpu isn’t getting nearly enough vcore to run stable at that given frequency with all 4 cores fully loaded.
the reboots dont damage anything, hell mine did it a million times trying to get 4ghz stable but more vcore and good temps got me there in the end.

hernaldo

you are getting a bitt too worried about temps .... Intels max thermal recommendation is indeed 71C ... but that is TCase - ie the temperature of the case of the processor ...

what we are monitoring with software is the Die temp - theres probably at least a 15C difference between TCase and TDie - hence why CPU throttling doesn't occur till about 85C or so

so plenty of headroom left :)

I've been having loads of problems getting my Q6600 G0 past 3ghz but it just wont play ball, i've had it on three boards now and each one refuses to allow it to pass 3ghz.

AW9D-Max 3ghz but would randomly BSOD, i've heard even with the latest bios that this board does not like the G0 stepping.

Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2H This board was just awful, i planned on using this in a SFF case as a nice LAN Gaming rig but it was just a pain, so passed it on to the Mrs PC.

F-I90HD 3ghz again in this but the bios is a bit limited (even the modded bios!) and i cant seem to lock PCI-E 100/33.33hz so it causes problems getting into windows - currently using this board (ripped from my MediaPC) as it seems to be stable for now.

Now im thinking of getting an IP35 based board and hoping that i will be able to push the Q6600 a bit more, i had my old E4300 running at 3.3ghz in my AW9D-Max and would like to at least get this Quad to the same level.

Any ideas?!

yup, non of those boards will be any good at overclocking a quad, pretty much any P35 board will be able to do significantly better.

Yeah - you guys have just confirm what i thought.

I seem to have gotten my hands on a decent Q6600 (i think) its VID is 1.285 and it runs fine at 333x9 without touching any volts at all on all three of my boards listed above.

Temp's also seem good im using the Noctua NH-U12P which seems to keep things around 32c idle and under 49c under load - although i've not really kept my eyes on temps that much as i've not been able to push the CPU as i thought.

I'm look at going with the MSI P35 Neo2-FR and will be sticking with my OCZ PC6400 - think this will manage 3.4ghz +?!

Can you help? My dad, hethers, used this forum a great deal. I found your details through his logon. Unfortunately my dad died from a heart attack last Saturday. Is there any way you could let others he was in contact with know that he will no longer be 'online'? With thanks.

Thanks for that, I'm on a P5K premium too so reassuring to know. lol I think its like when you get a new toy and your paranoid about it breaking at first sign of a problem, since this is the first intel chip for me its all abit foreign, but getting there, thanks for the input :)

I'm sorry to hear that, I didn't know your dad, but the easiest way to let people know is probably for you to make a thread in General Discussion and hopefully those that knew him will see the thread.
