**The Official Returnal Thread**

finished the main game and got most the collectables but struggling to find all the glyphs. i can see the ones i need when i join others but cannot collect them
Loving the weird vibe of this game. Reminds me strongly of Shadow of the Beast from back in the 80s.
it certainly is weird the story and some of the cut scenes took me awhile to make sense of. been awhile since i played shadow of the beast. will go and check a video :D

Any one have some tips for how to beat Phrike?

I've played about 5 hours and attempted the boss a few times but I am just not strong enough.

You lose almost everything between runs so not sure how you improve your character to be strong enough.

In a game like Hades you could spend your points on upgrades so each run you was stronger, I'm not seeing that in this game.

If you are struggling with this boss, make sure you have 1x large health kit ready to be used and the astronaut figurine pickup that gives you a 2nd life.

Try to explore as much of the level as possible before taking him on. It sounds long winded when you have the route to him already unlocked for quick attempts, but if gives the opportunity to level your HP bar up, more chance to gather healing items/artifacts like the astronaut. Plus the more you kill/gather pickups the greater your weapon proficiency will be, which in turn opens up the chance of a better weapon to drop, which from my experience is the biggest factor in the success of most runs.

I think the first time I fought him I used the shotgun style weapon, killed him but just barely. The second time I used the carbine with a couple of bars on damage and a modifier and he went down so much quicker.

Ok makes sense.

So I have to go around the map looking for power ups untill I think I have a good enough setup to take on the boss.

I did find the astronaut figurine once but since then I suppose it moves around randomly.

Also the siphium (green health) there doesn't seem to be that much of it around so some times I might have a level 5 weapon but be in critical health with nothing left on the map to heal me.

Game is hard!

I'm struggling with this game to be honest.

It's fun for a bit untill you die and have to start from square 0 again.

It doesn't feel like from run to run you accumulate any progress. Like your character gets a little bit stronger or you get better at the weapons etc.

Just seems like a big painful grind.

In Hades for example each run you accumulate more points to spend on your character so slowly slowly you get stronger.

There is nothing in this game. You have those things you can spend at the stone at the beginning of a run but the buff you get only lasts for a single run. :/

I fancy giving this a go. But not until it is around £10-15. It ain't a £30 game for me from what I have seen and there is a chance I may not enjoy it.

As far as quality and gameplay go, this is more than a £30 game but the problem is it might just not be your cup of tea so I'd wait as well.

Yeah, that's the thing. Because I have a bunch of games I want to play and complete anyway I am in no rush.

Same goes with the last of us. I played it before many years ago and I do want to play again and have in my steam collection. But no rush. It will be £10-15 at some point this year and have most of the bugs ironed out, will grab it then.

I might get this for PC when it drops to a good price.
I have it free on the PS5 as part of PS Plus but 20 years of PC gaming means I now suck with a controller so not managed to beat Phrike yet. I have come very close, but I know with KB & mouse I'd be way past this part by now

I find using a controller far easier nowadays, probably due to age

The stuff we get at the Cthonos is permanent right? (some items are consulmables for that run I belive)
Not permanent, but anything you unlock there is then added to the pool of potential drops for all future runs. It's basically a 'quicker' way of unlocking the full roster of artefacts/consumables rather than having to chance upon an alter with the undiscovered item.
