****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

Where did you go to pick one up sim free . Ive been calling up everywhere and poping into phone shops but no luck at all . Ended up just ordering one of O2 site. Now i got the long Wait:mad:

Phones4u in Eastbourne, they had 8 in on Saturday, though they sold out I think quickly.

Anyone who has the SGS2 should check out Samsung DIVE. It's one of those remote management websites in case it's stolen. Works really well.

By the way guys, do GPS and Wi-Fi really have minimal drain on the battery if you leave them turned on (but unused) all day? Especially interested in GPS as if I lose it it makes it miles easier to locate again, but with my Motorola Milestone it hammered the battery like fekk.

Ooh cool link, I registered in readiness. What functions has it got... remote lock and wipe etc?

I turn my Wifi off when out and about, but that's just because it's easy with the Samsung overlay (it's got a power management widget or it's in the notifications bar) and there's no need to have it on in those situations. I've never turned off the GPS so can't comment, but i'm happy enough with the battery life.

It takes pretty much 2 seconds for the wifi to reenable and the transition between using data and wifi is seamless when browsing. I've had it on all day connected to my home router and apparently it's used a measly 2% of my battery life despite being used quite a lot.

Remote lock
Wipe
Make phone ring
Locate phone using GPS
View call logs
Track your phones movements for 24 hours

The latter three sound very good for figuring out who has nicked your phone :)

Streeteh have you had a chance to mess around with the face recognition?

Briefly, seems to work well enough for 1 face, as soon as two come in however it doesn't seem so slick. Again this is a brief play so i could be doing something wrong.

[EDIT] Actually looking at what face recognition is meant for i take it back. It will pick one face and focus on it, hence why it doesn't work for two faces duh! For what its meant for it works really well, even at range its pretty decent at picking up a face and ensuring it's in focus.

[EDIT2] In fact i've not given the phone as much credit as it deserves, you can pick focus points via the touchscreen in normal mode or, with face recognition, it automatically focuses on whichever face you choose. There's also huge amounts of options i'm yet to investigate.

How comes o2 are selling this phone cheaper than anywhere else for £399 on PAYG? is it not unlocked and will only work with o2 sims?

Edit... dont matter. Seems to be locked.

So another question... can this phone be unlocked easily?

This is a little up in the air at the moment. Some people are saying O2 will unlock it for a small fee np, others are saying O2 will be asking you to wait 12 months before they will do that.

Time will tell on that one.

Finally got an email from mobiles.co.uk saying my order has been dispatched to the warehouse. I take it that means they've received their stock from samsung. Hopefully should be sent out tomorrow then!

Mobiles.co.uk have been saying they'll be despatching stock on the 3rd from day one. I posted this a week ago! :p

Can you not use some of these unlock websites that claim to give you a code for your phone within 24hours to unlock it?

I honestly don't know, but there's many more knowledgeable than myself out there who might help...

I'd hold off doing anything. Pretty sure the SGS could be done for free, maybe the SGS2 can as well.

Either way my point was that buying from o2 surely is just a £100 saving regardless, even if o2 wont unlock them for 12 months its possible to get it done easily on various websites for a small fee.

Velkommen and good first post! The Mali 400 has turned out to be a cracking little performer (looking forward to the new "tri-pipe" architecture of the Norwegian/Cambridge? team)
It whoops both nVidia's first attempt and probably Qualcomms Adreno 220 too, although it can't match Hertfordshire's finest :p (iPhone 5 will be the undisputed gaming king until SE ramp up playstation hardware)

Forget the 200MHz increase, it's just Samsung chasing headlines. All basic 40/45nm A9 cores can hit 1.5Ghz no probs (this is ocUK after all :))

So, why is Tegra 2 a mid range SoC and Exynos high end?

  • Exynos has the full 64-/128-bit SIMD NEON engine (nVidia used the basic VFP option to cut costs, could this be why Exynos eats Flash for breakfast?)
  • Dual-channel DDR2/DDR3 interface (Tegra 2 just has a single 32-bit DDR2 interface, Exynos has twice the theoretical bandwidth)
  • Better GPU (as fluke2k posted it should over ~50% faster, the extra bandwidth will be helping. Kal-El should be miles better...)
  • Superior Encode/Decode (Compare the Optimus 2X 1080p video capture and video playback of all the other Tegra 2 devices)
Tegra 2 was in production before the iPad came out don't forget, it's an old design now...

Thanks for the welcome and for your informative reply.
Seems like you know a little norwegian as well.. (or maybe som google magic?;-))
I know the Tegra 2 is a very old design and because of it, will suffer today compared to newer tech. I'm sure Kal-El will rectify much of this, unless however, it too will be a late adopter in the market. (wich I doubt)

The Mali was designed by the Norwegian firm Falanx wich was bought by ARM in 2006. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARM_Norway)

The Tegra2 and Mali 400MP has both it's strengts and weaknesses ofcourse, but I think that the Mali400MP has the edge overall.

Retentions

I rang them now and got through to retentions and got the same answer. Initially they were telling me end of May or beginning of June then suddenly he says it is out next week! Bizarre. The guy said he would call me back when it is out, although given my recent experiences with companies saying they will call me back and not, I doubt he will!

Streeteh thanks for using your time to check stuff out for us as i know it can become quite tiresome after a while.
But for your last quest ...if you choose to accept it:p. have you checked out the face recognition unlocking software? That's the one that will recognise your face and unlock the phone so you can use it:D

No problem, it's reminding me of things i forgot it could do/encouraging me to play with settings.

I was under the impression facial recognition to unlock was a rumour? I can't find any option to enable it.
