****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

The author of this article claims to have written to Samsung who are now saying we are looking at early May....

http://www.dialtosave.co.uk/mobile/...g-galaxy-s-ii-delayed-until-beginning-of-may/

Bollords to that, I've waited a month already for this phone (early reports suggested it would be launched immediately after the demos in Barcelona last month)...

I wish these companies wouldn't announce **** until they are fully ready to release it, what's the point in dangling a carrot like this in front my face when I can't get it for another 2 months by which time my contract will have ended ages ago. A late March release would have tied in perfectly with my upgrade option, now I have to decide whether to get say F it and get an HTC Desire HD now or wait and pay another two lots of £35 to Orange in contract payments for an old phone I no longer own.

I'm probably not going to bother with this and see what Apple stir up in June/July. I'm getting an iPad 2 so that will 'entertain me' until then anyway hopefully!

If Samsung released it sooner then I'd still be interested but they are just idiots when it comes to this sort of thing (much like HTC) and I cant be bothered with them.

Yeah could do that but I don't like Apple products, I find them hard to use and they look horrible from a design point of view....

Quad core is due end of the year, might stick with the san fran until then.

The same way that Dual Core was supposed to be due at the 'start' of this year?

I'd be surprised if we actually see any quad-core units til way into next year (if for no other reason than quad core cpus are pointless on most PCs right now let alone a phone).

Well the sony ngp will be using one, infact im sure sony have engineering samples which is why they have working models.

So does my laptop but like the Sony NGP it isn't a phone (despite both contaning the ability to perform calls).

I can't see units designed mainly as phones/smartphones having quad cores till next year nor do I understand why you would need one in a phone.

I know that, but your not realizing or at least admitting, that a quad mobile processor exists, and will be available end of the year, albeit in the ngp.

And i didn't say about needing one, but it's always nice to see what it does, anyhow what about gaming performance, that would quite happily use a quad core id imagine.

I said my laptop has a quad core processor so I did admit they existed and I'm fully aware they are putting them in other mobile devices, I just don't think they'll be a quad core PHONE this year which was my original point as we are talking about a delay on the S2.

You implied that you might as well ignore the S2 an wait for quad core phones.

Of course, and if a hexa-core phone existed and it was cheap I'd probably get it but I'm not going to ignore the S2 or the other smart phones out this year because a quad core phone may come out next year (which is what you were basically saying).

As for quad-core gaming, there are still very few PC games that take advantage of more than 2 cores and we're talking about games like Crysis 2 and other games that you wouldn't want to play on a phone but on a proper gaming system. Mobile phones games don't need Crysis quality graphics for the same reasons as a Wii doesn't, as it's 'novelty' rather than 'serious' gaming platform.

Yeah i suppose i did, more out of curiosity than any actual need, im more interested as sony have just developed a 17.7mp cmos sensor that fits into mobile devices, and it recored 1080p at 120fps, so that coupled with the quad would be rather special.

Thing is like you say, there's no real need for such phones yet, heck my san fran does an admirable job for what it is, ok i could buy say an optimus 3d, but now im older rather than just splashing out i wind up having to justify the puchase, seeing as tech moves that fast it's hard to keep up, especially in the wallet department.

The quad core mobile CPUs are a lot different compared to their desktop/laptop buddies. I'd suggest you research a little more about this.

Don't Orange have a SIM only monthly rolling contract you can move to? If so your line rental should come down a great deal and your next phone choice won't be down to when your contract ends.

My contact ends in April so I'll probably have a month at £15 or something like that to pay if I stay with orange. Not a long term plan for me the rolling contact thing because I can't afford to shell out £600 on a phone in one go so rely on contracts.

I have no problem with an 18 month contract providing I get the latest phone at the start of it. I'm happy to miss the next gen and get the next-next gen when the contract runs out.

The issue I have right now is my contract runs out next month in a kind of dead zone between new ranges being released and the current ones being older models and unless I wait another month on top of that (which I may well do) I'm stuck with a choice of phones that are all 4-6 months old already.

You seem to suggest because most people don't utilise quad core CPUs on desktops, that phone's wont utilise them the same.

However, I'm not picking an argument. I like the way quad core chips in phones are designed. Desktop CPUs (or more importantly, laptop CPUs), should have been designed like this for offering the power and power saving features). I just though you were misinformed.

I have been out of contract since October give it a few more weeks you'll get your phone alright.

Quad core A9s will be interesting if nVidia/oems can get them out quickly (late 2011, early 2012) Certainly a phone like the Atrix would benifit, the rest (that don't run a desktop OS) Meh... the SGS2 (If it lives up to expectations) will be good enough for most people for a good few years.

The next interesting phone SoC, for me, are the tri cores. These will have 2 A15 cores, running at 2-2.5Ghz, for apps and a single A5/A9 core running the OS/radios. Imagine a nexus S with a Core2Duo bolted on and improved battery life :D

I do really like the galaxy s 2. But wish they opted for tegra 2 rather than their new own chipsets. Tegra 2 I expect will get a lot more support and optimised games and apps.

Lg 2x for me. Slightly more compact. And has better gaming performance due to it's lower resolution than the atrix 4g. The lower ram doesn't seem to make a difference in benchmarks (see anandtech). The 2x seems to be either equal or better than the galaxy s2 and atrix 4g.

Best of all, it will be here the soonest!! :D

I understand some regions may get tegra 2 versions of the galaxy s 2 though. Now a tegra 2 galaxy s2 may be something special!
