****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

Can someone confirm.. after going through the flash process... do future firmwares become available through Kies or do you have to manually flash each time?

If it's an official unrooted firmware KIES should notify you a new firmware is available and upgrade it for you.

But if you've already used odin why not use it next time.

That will depend on your phones product code. A mismatch in the product code and the firmware's registry value (HIDSWVER) may not trigger the latest update. You can spoof it to fool Kies (see SpoofFw), but I'd stick to Odin. It's far more stable.

Registry values are in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Samsung\Kies\DeviceDB\1*

*number may be different

You can test for updates with your own registry values here > http://fus.nanzen.se/

I have just noticed something very odd with my phone. When the phone is plugged in and charging the touch screen isn't a sensitive near the bottom left of the screen, which means you have to press down slightly harder to get a response (Noticed this when using swype). Can anyone else replicate this?

EDIT: Its easier to replicate this when typing.
First try pressing a keys lightly as possible and it will register. Then put the charger in and press it as lightly as you can again. On my phone you have to press harder. Its annoying when typing when its on charge.

Can someone please try this out and get back to me.

No one gets this problem then? :(

Anyone else had issues with their sd card not being recognised? My sandisk 16GB works fine on my PC and Desire but the SGS2 won't recognise it. Haven't got another sd card here to test, so not sure of its just very sensitive to the type of card or the slots borked.

Erm.. I wont pretend you havent lost me there

I just didnt want to keep checking if there was a new firmware, and Kies seemed better as it was automated. What I did earlier seems a long process to do everytime, though apparently there is a new way of doing it with the cf-root?

I more than likely do have a mismatch though, one thing I noticed is that in Kies it says (VOD) at the end of CSC, so assuming it is still somehow searching only vodafone updates, rather than generic. Bit confused... though at least its updated for now :)

You just connect the phone to Kies, once it's recognised it downloads all the phone's particulars into your computer's registry. Disconnect phone, open regedit and check the strings for HIDSWVER and productcode.
If you see other people getting Kies updates and not you, put those values in the link I gave you. If the Samsung server doesn't respond, try XEU (generic UK) instead of VOD. Or find the older VOD HIDSWVER. Then you'll know if you should be getting an update and what is the most current. It's quite easy to spoof the product code if you like using Kies.

I see, sorry. HIDSWVER shows "I9100XWKE7/I9100XEUKD1/I9100XXKE4/I9100XWKE7" and prod code is "GT-I9100LKAVOD"

What I dont get, is I flashed using the XEU KE7 firmware, so shouldnt the VOD bit have gone? I assume the above means I have a mismatch? I did follow the guide on XDA... Its all worked... Just knowone said what to do in future :D

Strange I always found these screens the best in sunlight, certainly more usable than the I4 i had.

Same here, I am finding this far more usable in direct sunlight than previous phones.

This really is a fantastic piece of tech and a joy to use, I just have a couple of small issues which I hope Samsung (or someone else) will resolve soon... I have poor wifi and Fast Dormancy is not working quite properly, both have been well documented on XDA.

I will give it a go- I had real problems understanding how the jigsaw fitted together.

This is what I did last night and it worked for me. The instructions on XDA are more than sufficient, it is just understanding what does what and the order in which to do things which is a struggle.

1) Debrand your phone: Download the latest firmware stock from this thread and apply as directed to get back to basics:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278

As of yesterday it was XWKE7. This will work on UK phones regardless of carrier branding.

2) Rooting: Follow the instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399

A stock kernel can be taken from step one to get rid of the yellow triangle on boot.

I am currently on holiday in turkey and got my s2 a few days before departure. i would just like to say a few observations that i have come across.

Being a long term windows mobile user then moving to iphone 4 for 12 months just to give it a whirl. then getting bored of ios and switching to android with a galaxy s2 i am having mixed feelings about my experience so far.

first of all i want to say that the screen in sunlight is so bad i am seriously considering ditching just because of that, i was out this afternoon and the phone was completely unusable. the worst i have ever seen. i nearly fed it to the fish. completely opposite in normal light. the screen is a joy. such a shame it is so bad in the sun.

other quick giggles. and i know there are other apps to try but bare in mind i am abroad and have limited wifi access.

Music player is a dissapointment.
Stock mail is total fubar. not even a read all messages option! Come on!
Touch wiz is too limited. using launcher pro which is good but not perfect.
Keyboard is ok but annoying in the same ways the iphone keyboard is.
landscape keyboard is way too big. takes up Most of a webpage!
Screen res is ok. not great. blacks make up for it as you all know.
no text runaround when zooming which can be a pain.
Lock screens are crap.

Its not all bad.

battery is good and getting better after more discharges and charges.
customization i like but takes ages to get stuff how i like.
camera ok so far.
Speed is good but not the shockingly fast i expected.

there is more pros and cons but overall so far i can't decide if i hav

e made a mistake or not?

I am a fan of HTC in general and part of me wishes i had waited for the sensation. Another part of me wishes i had stuck with the iphone. and the other says stick with samsung. Main bug for me is screen in sunlight. major problem. gggggrrrrr. rant over. hehe

I have just sold my iphone 4 for this. Your points are all valid. I personally enjoy using this phone. The sensation is not as fast as this phone in use either so no mistake there. The iphone vs the SGS2 is a trickier one. Once you have set up your phone to be the way you like it, I reckon you will fall in love.

Out of the box there is a major jolt as you get what is a fairly ugly UI as opposed to apple beauty. This dissipates as you load on your mkv's, watch flash videos and organise yourself the way you want to!

Thats just it. It was simple for the masses hence its popularity combined with a very good pr/ad campaign.

I guess so but 10 mins after turning on your brand new I4 for example you know everything the UI does and think mehh is that it.

Yeah but again for the masses they are happy with that. To be fair I was quite impressed with nephews and how it worked with his apple tv for example. However I refuse to pay the fruit tax so I'm now 99.99999% certain I want to get the sgs2 :D

Can anyone search overclockers threads using the default browser? the search bar keeps disappearing for me

If you people are getting ass screen viewing in sunlight then turn off the screen power settings in display options and maybe even use manual brightness and just adjust brightness by swiping the notification bar.

I have no issues with reading stuff in sunlight on mine.

All of the other points can be largely solved by installing alternative apps to the offending stock ones that you may not like.

Such is the beauty of Android, innit.
