****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

Kies is probably the worst program I have ever used in my LIFE! :p

Tried it out for about 10 minutes and ended up uninstalling that piece of junk, didn't find any updates for my spica (despite there being loads of new versions out.........), didn't work for anything

Want my advice, don't bother with it ever again :p Might get your gs 2 backed up eventually.........but the question is, will it restore the backup successfully :p

Well it's backing up now but it shot through the first few categories, I'm not sure if it's actually backed up all my contacts and schedules properly. I glimpsed a 0/1 a few times as though it's not doing it properly. It looks like it's backing up videos and photos accurately though. I think I'll do another backup after this has finished and see if I can tell if it's backing up contacts and schedules properly. But what other backup option is there?

You could move the videos/photos etc. using a FTP app/server (this is done wirelessy over your LAN connection, so no need for the USB cable) like this:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smarterdroid.wififiletransfer&feature=related_apps

Might take a while though if your connection isn't the best and you have A LOT to move.

And for messages, call log etc. this:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/...DEsImNvbS5yZXJ3YXJlLmFuZHJvaWQuTXlCYWNrdXAiXQ..

Your contacts can be done by the above app as well, but your contacts should be synced to your google account, which means there is no need to back them up with any app, same goes for the calendar events as well. You can check this out just by simply looking at your account/sync settings on your phone and/or logging into gmail on your Pc and checking the contacts and calendar there.

Excellent, you could well be my lifesaver! I forgot about google sync.

I think kies backed up my videos and photos as I could see it slowly backing up 0/345 photos and 0/31 videos, but it definitely seems to have messed up on call logs. It said 0/1 (and hung for ages doing that before it completed) when I have more than 1 call log, and I didn't see any numbers displayed for contacts and schedules. I'll try those wifi apps above.

I've just done a fresh google calendar sync and checked my google calendar account, all my calendar appointments are there. Likewise, all my contacts are there on google contacts.

If I restore a backup after doing the factory reset and find the contacts and calendar events aren't there, ie, weren't backed up properly, and then connect my phone to my pc, is there any danger of them getting deleted from google like if it automatically syncs on connection? If that did happen, the google play wifi apps would be a good second backup.

As soon as you log into/add your google account to the the "clean" GS 2, they should sync straight back to the mobile, the contacts etc. won't be deleted from your google account unless you actually hit delete on either your PC gmail account or mobile.

There shouldn't be any danger whatsoever. You can back them up just to be on the safe side using "my backup" app and then transfer the file with the backed up contacts etc. via that wifi FTP to your PC and when your phone is reset, just move those files back onto the phone and restore them using "my backup" app.

Thanks a lot Nexus. Once the phone is reset, I'll no doubt be back here for further instructions if I get stuck. :p

Well, my 4GB of media files randomly decided to become visible on my PC just now. Phew!

So I've done an immediate backup of it all to my pc, saves me doing that part on wifi. Just need to wifi backup the call logs, sms, etc with My Backup app.

Semi-OT, mrk (as a fellow Go Launcher user), have you had any issues with the latest update?

My up and down swipe gestures (show app drawer / show notification bar) don't seem to work anymore and i swear the overall graphics (icons etc) look somehow... overexposed and grainy.

Icons are fine for me but I noticed the gestures from the BETA and found the problem to be related to how the new v3 sees the homescreen space and what's being swiped.

If you swipe the homescreen up or down on an area of homescreen that has no icons or widgets then it's fine but you can't use homescreen gestures if you swipe an area of screen that is covered by an icon or widget.

Bit odd really. I will stick it out the rest of the month see if they patch it back.

Guys, what ROM are you all using on your S2s? I'm hoping to be getting mine and my other halfs soon and would be nice to know which one's best - I've read reviews of loads of them and the one that stands out most is the Resurrection Remix 1.8.1 on www.galaxys2root.com - what's everyone's thoughts on this?

Also, is rooting the S2 as easy and straight forward as rooting any other samdung phone? (via odin, right?)

If you'd like a stock 4.0 experience, an AOKP rom like HydrogenICS is pretty good. I haven't tried any Samsung based firmware since ICS came out for the GS2 :p

How are people managing over 3hr of screen time?

I'm currently running HydrogenICS 05.05 with Siyah v3.2b8 kernel. My screen on eats the battery. Getting about 1hr30mins of screen on time. Brightness is at 25% all the time.

Any ideas on how to improve it? Thanks.

Im still on sensation 3.4 and i like it a lot :-)

About battery - different roms, checking for apps that might keep you phone awake etc.. i get over 4hrs

Well that's pretty stupid, there's virtually no free space on my main home screen :(

Wish i'd done a Titanium backup now, as it was working perfectly before this update!

Oh and also the homescreen transitions are now sporadically laggy. Bah!

What's Wifi Sharing? It's using like 1/4th of all my battery use and I only get about 12 hours from a full charge with minimal use at the moment.....

Wifi has been turned off since about 5 minutes after I unplugged the phone at 100% and without using it at all today after less than 4 hours I'm at 75%.

I'm also still on Sensation (3.2 though) but I'm not sure about the battery. With moderate usage I barely manage to finish the day without a charge. It might be just a rogue app so I need to look into that. Apart from that, the touch screen is also a bit unresponsive at times.
The problem is, I am hooked on Sensation now as it is the only ROM with a decent look out of the box and I am not a big fan of the stock ICS look to be honest (and most themes available are just ugly -- I really feel Android still has a long way to go in the looks department). I might just wait it out and flash the coming new version of Sensation, which I think should be there soon.

Hey Nexus, good call on 'My Backup' app. Awesome app and pretty fast. It's got very nice user interfaces. I've just done a data backup to sdcard and transferred the file to my PC, and am now doing an application/media backup for good measure, also with 'My Backup'. I feel really safe with this because I can view and select/deselect every single item it's backing up before the backup, and it's even backing up launcher pro. I'm also able to go to the view screen in 'My Backup' and read every single call log, contact, calendar event and SMS that it just backed up. I'm definitely going to buy this app after the 30 day trial, well worth the money. Also, that wifi transfer app said incompatible with my device on the android market, but it doesn't matter now anyway.

As far as that horrible samsung backup app, someone should lock it up and throw away the kies.*groan*:D

what android version are you on?

I'm on the factory reset now, was asked to delete my samsung account first, and it's now asking me to confirm my PIN. Would that be a standard '0000' or some other number I'm meant to know? It's presumably not the same number as my lock screen password?
