****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

Nope, Data is preserved. (Unless it all goes wrong ofc)

I hope so, as so far cant create backup.

Edit...

Just as soon as I write this, KIES disconnects from phone with the phone saying 'Donwloading'

Now I have no idea if it's doing it or if it has gone wrong.... KIES just says connecting.

But it could have disconnected as the phone is in firmware upgrade mode....

Phone just says... 'Downloading... Do not turn off target'!!

If all else fails, download the full ROM from sammobile and flash it using ODIN. It'll be faster anyway!

But do you think there is a possibility that the phone is still doing it's thing?

The phone disconnecting from KIES theoretically normal as the phone is upgrading firware....

But currently its just sitting there saying Downloading... Do not turn of target....

but KIES has disconnected from the phone...

The two times i did it via KIES for my friend recently, neither time did it 'disconnect' at any time. KIES is a POS from what i hear about it. If it hasn't budged by now i would assume it never will. Perhaps someone with more KIES experience can chip in, but i assume if you cancel the job there would be no issue with using the ODIN method instead.

Not it hasnt budged yet. Phone still says Downloading and Kies still sais connecting.

Everything went smooth as far as I can tell untill the phone switched to downloading at which point, KIES told me the device disconnected.

I', gona give it to 4pm to budge, at which point I think Im gona have to do a battery pull.

If I do do a battery pull, whislt it says 'doawnloadin, Do not turn of target', what damage am I going to do?

If it hasn't begun to 'update', (which is what it sounds like), you should have a fully functional and normal device. You only need to be able to get in to Download mode to flash via ODIN, which to be fair is such a simple process you'll kick yourself for not having used it before.

So at this point do you think I should do a battery pull?

Even tho it does say 'Do not turn of target'?

If there's a Cancel' option in KIES try that. Otherwise disconnect phone from cable and see if you can turn it off/on using the power button. If not, battery pull and see where you're at.

Here's an ODIN flash guide:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1406664

And you'll need the ROM from here:

Ok, turned it off ok and everything seems to be as it was....

Will try again!

Fingers crossed. If you do go down the ODIN route you might want to decide if you want the carrier branded ROM, or take the opportunity to flash an unbranded version like the Nordic release. Either way, ODIN is a far better tool than KIES and you should consider using it!

I will look in to it, if all goes pear shaped.

Thanks for the links!!

KIES makes even Blackberry look good!

Looks a little bit more promising at the moment. Hasnt disconnected this time and phone says downloading, whilst I have a % sign within KIES!

Probably shoulsnt be trying to do this at work!!!

Here's what to do:

1. Open task manager and kill kies.exe
2. Download this file: http://www.hotfile.com/dl/198306106/26e7704/I9100XWLSJ_I9100OXXLS7_NEE.zip.html it's XWLSJ, the latest Nordic ROM, you won't notice any difference from the 3 version (unless the 3 version has branding/3 apps, in which case they'll be gone)
3. Unzip the above
4. Open Odin, click PDA and then select the .tar or .tar.md5 file that came from the .zip you just downloaded
5. Click start
6. Wait a bit
7. Enjoy Jelly Bean

:).

Kies sucks.

If you really want the 3 version you can replace step 2 with:
2a. Download Odin from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1092429&d=1338290578
2b. Download whatever ROM you want from SamMobile.com

Edit: edited in a newer version of Odin :).
