***The Official Samsung Galaxy S III Thread***

I find it sad how much I want this phone to be released so I can make up my mind between this and the HTC offerings.

Been on my Desire for 5+ months since getting my GS2 nicked and it's killing me :(

Not that bizarre really, otherwise they'll fall into the trap of infinite successors like Apple have.

I'd expect a name change rather than sgs4 but I think they can get away with 3.

Ive been holding out for the s3 since January, but I can feel myself starting to give in to HTC. My mate has just got the one S and I think its pretty smart, the only let down for me is the lack of memory and NFC. I don't want to give in but this waiting is getting daft, surely we will here something in April ?

So get the One X, it addresses both of those issues. :p

About time we had a rumour round up, here's what I think is going to happen...
In May they'll announce at least two new Galaxy models.

i9300 (The Galaxy S2 replacement or One S competitor)
  • 4-4.3" 600x1024 sAMOLED with ICS software buttons
  • Exynos 4212 running at 1.4Ghz (Could be clocked higher to be competitive with S4/Tegra 3 in benchies? or 1.4GHz to let the quad core galaxy 'win')
  • 1GB RAM
  • Don't think they'll worry about battery life too much with this model, expect ~1750mAh.
  • Thin ceramic chassis or 'good enough' plastic job for high volume?

i9320 (New Galaxy Variant, One X competitor)
  • 4.65" 1280*768 (or 800) sAMOLED+ with a hardware home button.
  • Exynos 4412 running between 1.5-1.6Ghz. (Clocked for higher performance or lower power consumption than tegra 3, possibly with a massive T604 GPU)
  • 1.5-2GB RAM.
  • Big 2500mAh+ battery.
  • Thin 'ceramic' chassis?

i9350 (Galaxy Note replacement)
  • 5.3" 1680*1050 sAMOLED
  • Exynos 5
  • 2GB+ RAM

I think abandoning the Galaxy brand, after putting so much effort into creating it, would be a bad move by Samsung. I hear people talking about their 'Galaxy' phone, not their 'Samsung' phone.

Realistically are the differences between the HTC one X and the Galaxy III going to be anything other than marginal?

I ask as I start a new job next week and have been told to expense any contract I like, and as I am effectively phone-less right now, just going for the one X on an 18 month contract is a lot less hassle than trying to get hold of a temp. handset and mess around with transferring my number until the SIII is released

If the Galaxy Nexus had better specs, I would not have bothered with my One X as I love the soft keys idea in ICS, so if the S3 has them I'll buy it in a heartbeat.
Going with a massive home key a la iPhone will be a massive step backwards for a high spec phone IMO.

The short answer is yes, the differences will be marginal and more user personal preference.

^ This.

Unless you're someone really bothered by specifics and small things, the difference between the two won't be anything big. It's extremely unlikely, anyway.

It won't be as big of a difference between the handsets this time though, I reckon.......

The only areas where the GS III will be better (IMO):

- battery will be removable, SD slot most likely along with 16GB/32GB internal memory
- camera (for quality, not features)
- better battery life (not by much though unless they decide to use quite a big battery but unlikely as nowadays the trend seems to be, who can make the thinnest phone :p)
- Better processor and GPU along with of 1.5GB/2GB RAM

I think the one X will still be better for:

- screen
- software
- "perceived quality" of the phone

So, will be little to no difference in speed/smoothness and in the end, it will come down to preference.
