Anyone have trouble reinstalling Titanium Backup after flashing SlimKat?
Came from ArchiDroid with apps backed up with titanium but now that Im on SlimKat, when I try to reinstall Titanium, but it says that I need root access?
And when I try to install SuperSu, it always fails.

Use the CF-Auto root method (via ODIN).

Had Slimkat on my phone for a week now, no crashes, freezes or bugs, it's been perfect and my S3 feels like a new phone. Love it :)

So far so good on my gf's phone, she has been complaining with random restarts and crashes while using Temasek and ArchiDroid for a while so gave SlimKat a go.

I'm just getting stuck in to rooting and installing a custom ROM on my S3 after running it stock since launch, and I have a quick question regarding backups.

I installed CWM, made a backup and then copied that to my PC. As the backup takes up quite a lot of space (~4GB), can I delete it from the internal storage? And is there anything else I need to copy over to my PC? I have installed Titanium Backup, backed-up all the apps and system data that I think I might need after installing a custom ROM and copied that to my PC too, so I think that is all, but if there is anything else please let me know!

e: Also, I'll be installing Slimkat as per the recommendations in this thread, and on their website under the installation instructions it says:

"In CWM perform wipe data/factory reset and in mounts and storage section format system."

What exactly does this wipe? i.e. what data will be deleted?

Don't bother restoring system settings after flashing the new ROM it will cause problems!

Use CM Backup to copy all your contacts and text messages and your almost done.

Don't forget to back up any pictures or videos on the internal storage as they will be removed when the data wipe is done.

Ok thanks. Is CM Backup an app/tool? Apologies if I'm missing something obvious!

I think I've set the camera to save all pictures to my external microSD card, but thanks for the reminder, I'll have a look now.

If I left the CWM backup on the internal storage, would that get deleted when I perform a wipe too?

And another question (on top of all my others), do I have to install/flash a custom kernel? I've seen you mention the Boeffla kernel BigBoy, what benefits would I gain from using that?

Internal storage gets completely wiped (formatted) so anything in there will be lost. CM Backup is an app search the play store for it (free).

There is no need to flash a custom kernel most Roms come with there own custom one anyway. Boeffla just adds a lot of options to tweet your system for best performance and battery usage. Not needed for the casual user :)

Thanks for the help so far BigBoy, but I've got some more questions now!

So I've installed Slimkat, I followed the instructions on their website so before I installed the rom I did this:

- In CWM perform wipe data/factory reset and in mounts and storage section format system.

I noticed in your guide, and in some YT videos, people also say to perform other types of wipe (cache, Dalvik etc.). What are the benefits of doing all these? And should I go back and do them (I've yet to set up Slimkat much so could re-install it)?

Also, by default in Slimkat the DPI is different, so text and icons are smaller, or at least I think that is why. I'd like to change the DPI back to the standard GS3 value, which is 320. I found a link to the app called texdroider_dpi on the slimroms website. Is this a good one to use?

Edit: Also x2, back on the stock rom I had disabled the lights beneath the capacitive touch buttons, but I can't see an option in Slimkat to turn those off. Does anyone know of a way to do that?

Cache is formated when you do a wipe data factory reset but I tens to format it again just to be sure. Dalvik on the other hand is untouched, Dalvik cache is where all your apps get decompiled and stored as run time scripts so they can be run on the fly (not just your apps but system specific apps as well) that being the case its best to format dalvik EVERY time you flash a rom. If you don't you can experience some very odd behavior within apps especially if you change the DPI of your screen, as apps are decompiled so that the are rebuilt to fit tour screens DPI!

Texdroider_DPI is what I use for my wife's s2 t adjust the DPI once you have set it to the new DPI it is recommended that you wipe the Dalvik cache for the above reasons. You can wipe Dalvik at any time with out it affecting your currently installed system as its only an area of system and app cache.

Disable light by going to
Settings>Advanced Options (right at the bottom)>Device>Screen and turn off Hardware buttons back light :)

Ok that makes sense. I ended up using Texdroider_DPI and have settled on 300 for now (320 felt too big!).

So going by your comment I should now wipe the Dalvik cache? Or is it worth wiping everything again including the Dalvik, flashing Slimkat again, changing the DPI and then rewiping Dalvik?

e: I also had a question regarding SU. Slimkat has a form of superuser built in, but Titanium backup said that the SU binary might need updating. So I installed SuperSU, which upon launch said I NEEDED to update the binary, and that it could do it. So I let it reboot into recovery and do it automatically. Was that the best way of doing it?

No need to reflash anything just go into recovery and wipe Dalvik.

Their is no need to update the SU binary on Slim it uses a different method of giving you Super User access and is much safer than just using SuperSU.

Updated from v88 to v90 earlier. Few hours later had a one of those epic disasters. Apps have disappeared, settings have reset and Nova Launcher has defaulted and now Prime won't install along with the apps that have disappeared.

Uchhh will have to wait until I'm at my computer this evening to sort it out because of Google 2-step and no backup codes handy otherwise I would just wipe and start again right now.

Guys can anybody advise on how to fix a possible bricked sgs3?
Basically installed custom rom on other half's phone donkeys ago.
Working perfectly up to now, at first phone did not charge and now wont turn on except for a white screen.
Can put it into download mode ect.
Tried to change firmware/rom via odin but fails and says no pit partition.
Cannot find stock rom/firmare anywhere.

Hi guys
Thanks for the replies.
With regards to the above i had to have my gf hand it in for repair in the end.
She took her contract out via phones4U 24 month contract., network provider t mobile.
Basically she spoke to tmobile who said they would sent it away for repair.
She was contacted the other day (not sure if samsung or third part repairs but i'm guessing the latter but will confirm tomorrow)
They said the phone had recieved water damage to lcd screen and mobo.
They are wanting over £100 for repair.
I know for a fact the screen is fine as when i tried download mode the screen would show everything fine.

She has had the phone in same case as mine (otterbox) since she has had hers and at no poin has it been in contact with water other than the odd bit of drizzle.
She is still under contract, and cant help but feel they are trying to take advantage of her.
Any advice as to what i can do?

The white screen and not charging issues scream water damage I'm afraid.

As for no valid pit its not hard to find the pit (partition information table) files on XDA forums If you use the search function. Also the stock firmware and how to use all parts with Odin instructions are all on XDA again not hard to search for.
