*** The Official Samsung Galaxy S4 Thread ***

Looking good regarding the battery life. Can't wait to see what the octa version will be like.

Just such a shame about the UI/layout/colour scheme of touchwiz, that is what really puts me of galaxy phones (cba with rooting etc. these days, even if it is easy to do). Why on earth Samsung dropped the black for white on a SAMOLED phone is beyond me  :o

To prove that whites are white :D

Are there ways to change it back to black, without flashing a custom ROM? Don't mind rooting it but want to stay stock otherwise really.

there might be a theme for a stock ROM, afaik i had one for my s2 ages ago :) i think it was called domination something somewhere..

but yeah it won't be liked im sure of it and someone will sooner or later put a theme together to flash over stock+rooted ROM.

JB Domination was the theme's name and it was also available on the S3 :)

It was cool and I had it running with a rooted ROM and I'm sure once Devs just bringing things out for the S4, no doubt if I were to buy the S4 I would immediately root the phone and flash a ROM and also theme it :D

More from the Russ, enough can be gleaned from the numbers and graphs to make posting worthwhile, but I don't need that proviso as Captain Kirk pops up in the review, thus making it relevant anyway, first octa bench, translation added.

Also apparently 3's CEO has stated q4 for an over night rollout of 4g with no desire to rush, my interpretation is Nov, Dec with Dec as the front runner.

As I browse around I keep seeing more folk saying no exynos in the UK at first release but that it will arrive later in the year Autumn and should have UK lte, as I say just what folk are saying so no source.

User Interface Walkthrough:

Octa-Core benchmarks are at the bottom of the link.

From that link:

"Benchmark -
So, as we had the Octa-Core (GT-I9500) variant of the Galaxy S4, we decided to do some benchmarks. We are just BLOWN away from the results we got. The Galaxy S4 crushed every other device, even the HTC One and the Sony XPERIA Z. We used Antutu and Quadrant as our benchmark tools. The device received a score of 27417 on Antutu and 12726 on Quadrant."

What was the snapdragon version scoring in these benchmarks for comparison?

Snapdragon / Octa

Antutu

24,894 / 27,417

Quadrant

11,782 / 12,726

Yea so I'm waiting for the Octa :)

I don't see why benchmark figures are so important and would dictate as to which phone/version to get

They don't give any idea as to real world usage and in fact devices that can sometimes score higher than other phones might not actually be as fast/smooth e.g. the nexus 4 doesn't score very well yet it is the fastest/smoothest out of the box android phone to date (haven't used a htc one yet, but supposedly it is even quicker)

not saying that the GS 4 octa won't be very fast in real world usage as I am sure that it will be, but I would be very surprised if you notice it in real world usage.

Also, I wouldn't say that it "crushed" the competition, to me "crushed" is when it beats it by a large margin and that is not a large margin :p

Besides, from reading xda from some developer, supposedly the snapdragon chipset will actually be better overall. Will link posts later, I think they were posted before anyway.

Nexus 18 - I think some benchmarks are useful for getting an idea how well the device will perform in games, Quadrant seems to be completely random from my experiences though.

You say the Nexus 4 is the smoothest/fastest android phone to date, it is far from smooth in some games from what I have been told. I had an S3 and even that stuttered in games like the dark knight which my Note 2 had no issues with (same cpu just clocked higher) so in some instances, it is noticeable.

Other than battery performance, what are the other real world benefits of having Octa?

IMO battery has no real world impact, unless you're horrendously forgetful or careless, as long as the bad battery isn't because of bad design or optimisation if it's because the tech is pushing the envelope in its power requirements one has no option but to buck up and plug the phone in, if you want to use it to its full extent that is.

It largely comes down to what the game is like and how well it is optimised for the chipset, software, every phone from the last year using decent hardware should have no problems with games, if they do then the software optimisation of the game is to blame.

Are you comparing a stock gs 3 and stock note II? i.e. not rooted with custom kernels etc.

Yup, quadrant is useless, surprised review sites still even use it :p

Really? I tried it out yesterday and it seemed good to me, although I didn't try games like the tdk. I have tdk/amazing spiderman on my S though and it runs very well (that is only dual core krait as well).

Yes I'm comparing a stock S3 and Note 2, I found dark knight laggy on the S3 and smooth on the Note 2. Ofcourse it depends on how well the game is optimised but we are seeing games with very good graphics coming to phones so all that power may prove useful here although I agree in general, for the vast majority of tasks, it is overkill for a phone. If you are spending £500+ though, i don't think there is anything wrong with being picky and wanting to go for the better specced phone. I'll be sitting this one out, I'm very annoyed at Samsungs shocking customer service (still don't have my phone back) and I'm considering buying a non-Samsung product next but everything else seems to lack one thing or another for me. I'll wait to see what the Note 3 offers and see what else is available around that time.

Anyone else got an email from 3 just now? :D

@ e36adz Motorola x phone 1st and then Nexus 5 should be out by the time of the Note 3 along with 3 getting their 4g rolled out, should be a good time to buy plus the One and S4 will have settled down pricewise and with sw updates, so all in all not just a good time to buy but an excellent time to buy, providing the world economy hasn't collapsed.

For those looking at Three, the plans are:
Ultimate 500 for £35/month & no upfront
One Plan for £37/month & no upfront

Pre orders start tomorrow. Don't know the release date.
