*** The Official Samsung Galaxy S4 Thread ***

I've had the Lollipop update notification on my T-mobile S4 for a while. But I'm reluctant to update it, both due to the fact that my contract is about to run out (I'm getting a new phone) and also the issue when I last updated, most of my apps disappeared and things went awry with the update. Am I missing out on much by not updating? I would guess not.

Using odin is pretty simple

Yes efuse is tripped so not OTA's form now on.

IMO, since you already rooted, you should run a custom rom based on stock but minus the bloatware.

or AOSP

Thanks! The custom roms do look good, but I'm curious as to if anything else needs to be done, or just download for the I-9505 rom & flash using the stock recovery built into the phone?

I think out of those 2 Omega looks better & slightly more polished, might have to check it out!

to install a custom ROM you need root and a custom recovery (latest CWM ot TWRP)

The way I would do it.

With root, use titanium backup to backup apps (3rd party - not built in apps) with data (i.e settings and games saves)
Backup all your pics and music and other data yor PC via standard USB transfer - then deleta all folders/data off the phone
Download the ROM and copy to phone
Reboot into recovery and Wipe all data and caches
Install new ROM

There are plenty of guides on XDA and youtube. So watch a few of them first.

I'll try and answer any questions you have.

The way I would do it.

If your not doing it already its worth getting the update.zip out of titanium pro so you can install it directly from recovery after installing your new rom - makes it a load easier to restore backup after setting up the new rom.

In Titanium go to menu - create update.zip and move it save it to your sd card

once you've installed the new rom from recovery and booted once, restart into recovery and install zip from sd, select the update.zip, clear the cache and the dalvik cach and restart

you'll then have titanium installed and ready to go :)

Anyone have MHL working on their S4? I have an S4 from Three on 4.2.2 and I cannot get MHL working to either 2 different monitors or with my headunit (supports mhl for screen cloning).

I have tried 3 different adaptors:

  • Startech Samsung MHL Adapter PN: MHD2HDF11
  • A CSL MHL Cable (seen this one used on a Samsung device before and work, gets decent reviews as well)
  • Genuine Samsung one (though the online chat told me I had bought an Australian part but you cannot buy the UK part from any distributor, figure that one out).

None of them work. On the headunit the screen goes blank and the phone just says connecting. With the genuine one the headunit does flash up connecting as well but still doesn't work. I have made sure all have been powered by 2A mains chargers as well. Monitors just say no signal.

Any ideas? Samsung support told me its the aus adapter (which i don't believe, their store page i was linked to has the "aus" pn in the url

I read somewhere on the internet people saying after a 4.3 update it broke their mhl support. I was thinking of flashing a custom rom but three are meant to be releasing 5.0 soon so I might wait for that.

So... my contracts running out and I need to think of preparing my phone for resale. I know how to unlock it, though I'm reluctant to do it right now. Would bad things happen if I unlocked it before the contract officially ends? And more importantly, anyone know where the factory reset or 'reset everything' button is on this thing? I wouldn't want the buyer to be getting a load of files, settings and apps on a phone they bought.
