**** The Official Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ Thread ****

They're synthetic benchmarks, in real world use it's highly unlikely anyone will notice a difference.

Android Nougat is highly optimised these days also, so app launch and general use is well under control. The days of needing a flagship to have a smooth OS experience are long gone.

I would recommend people weigh in the bigger pros and cons of buying the S8 right now. Remember it ships with Nougat 7.0, not 7.1.1 or 7.1.2. Considering the S7 hasn't even got 7.1 yet, it's unlikely the S8 will get it anytime soon either, and then we've got Android .0 coming out later this year.

Will either Galaxy get 8 this year? I highly doubt it given how long Samsung took to release 7.0 for the S6 when the S7 release finally happened.

The competition is already shipping with at least 7.1.1.

Personally I'm not paying nearly £800 for a device that could remain stuck on an old Android version for months on end!

The rear camera sensor is the IMX333 vs the S7's 260, but the specs are the same. It has multiframe shooting, but otherwise all the samples I have seen comparing the two so far show no major differences.

You could get an S7 edge and save nearly £400 odd?

My impression is that everything properly good has been saved for the Note 8 because Samsung ran out of time with the S8 due to fast tracking its release and hashing in the fingerprint sensor on the back as a result, as well as putting a smaller battery in both devices than what should be in them.

there was nothing rushed about the s8, they release this time every year, they couldn't a finger print scanner on the front - if that's peoples biggest concern, then they have an easy life.

Battery doesn't need to improve if everything uses less of it.

Very interesting post for my situation. In an ideal world I'd wait for the pixel 2, however my z3c needs to changing. I'm wondering whether my best option is to buy a pixel or s7 used and continue to use my sim only plan, then sell it and get a contract when the pixel 2 comes out OR just get a s8 contract now and then sell it and buy the pixel 2 up front in 6 months time.

What do you think?

Whatever pixel, note or any other phones be this year, they're not going to be any better hardware wise, this is simply because better hardware does not exist yet and even if towards later this year u get a minor refresh it's going to be hardly noticeable.

Whilst hardware specs won't get better in terms of the SoC, hardware implementation and camera modules will. We already know Samsung have a dual camera module for this year and TS a sure bet this will feature in the Note 8.

There are a bunch of things that were rushed on the S8 to alleviate the fire from the Note 7 saga, this much we know from all the leaked information that has come out the past few weeks.

The quick charge on the S8 is said to remain quick charge 2.0 as well whereas the competition all have QC3 or greater.

Honestly, the Note 8 will be the true next gen flagship, not the S8. The Note 8 will also almost certainly have an rgb matrix amoled panel whereas the S8 still has pentile (rgb is sharper, more colour accurate). It will almost certainly also have QC4 among other new tech advances like finger print sensor below the screen which didn't make it in the S8 due to time constraints.

The iris recognition could have been fine tuned so that someone with a photo of your face can't unlock it as well. There's a video of someone doing exactly that.

A whole bunch of small things that smell of a rush to release.

It's a great device, but not £400 greater than an S7E edge. And why does China only get the 6GB version with 128GB storage?

Put it this way, you will be able to do the exact same things on the S7 that you can with the S8.

If i had to buy a phone right now, it would just be another S7 edge.

I certainly love your optimism regarding the note 8...but I don't feel it will have that many improvements over the S8. Especially when last year the Note7 was barely any different from the S7. I think all those things you mentioned are going to be for next year. I expect the Note 8 to have a slightly bigger screen.. maybe 6GB of ram...but generally very much the same. Id love to be wrong but I feel we get too optimistic with what upgrades were going to get on these things and then always get left disappointed. Whatever the note 8 gets for upgrades we will just be saying the S9 is out in a few months so we may aswell wait again.

Geekbench shows roughly the same single core and around 15% multi core, same memory speed.. so no faster than a S7 unless you are a game freak. Disappointing :)

All about the screen, will have a play with the non plus soon and make my mind up if worth it over my s7 edge.

Or wait later for the Note... or even the I8 which will bring proper cpu increase and a non stupid finger print scanner placement :p

still get that home button though ;) remember that optimism for the 7? oh goodness

Agreed this year is all about the design and screen.

Camera and battery is near enough untouched and so is the RAM.

QC2 you say? Damn, not impressed at all.

I also believe the Note 8 will have dual cameras and a screen embedded FPS and possibly more RAM.

Had a play on one yesterday. Really nice looking and feeling phone but could never justify spending so much on one when you can get so close to it for half of the money .

I'm sure I could get used to the finger scanner but at the moment it feels natural to unlock my phone by thumbing the home button so that's really strange

Would be worried about battery life too

Benchmarks look good but then in my experience even a mid range chinese phone on nougat will ease through the most demanding Android apps and games

Not sure what it would take for me to pay the price to be fair

Uhm, face unlock and iris unlock are two different things.

You can't use a photograph to get round iris scanning, you're thinking of the facial recognition.

I also went and gave it a go, the screen is amazing, but I get the feeling it's going to be a bit too tall for me, my hands aren't massive and I feel it would require me using 2 hands to use it properly.

Still waiting to see this in the flesh and although 'new gadget syndrome' is kicking in :p I'm not going near it for £40+ a month. My S7 edge was recently repaired from a cracked screen and I was stuck using a cheap android phone for a week - painful. Since I got the s7 back, factory reset and updated to android 7, it seriously feels like a brand new phone again. For me the S8 is just about the screen, and what a stunning screen it is but everything else seems to have been compromised slightly to accommodate it; battery life, button placement, fp scanner placement etc.

If the next Note has a near edge to edge screen but no curve, a bigger battery, I'd prefer that personally.

Looks like an S8 Mini is in the works and due to be released "soon".

Word flying around that it's supposed to be around half the price of the S8. I can't see that happening, but even if it's say £250 less than the S8, then that's a bit of a bargain IMO as long as the styling stays the same, and the battery isn't drastically smaller than the S8.

Although because it's aimed at cheaper markets, maybe it will be half price? At that sort of price point, I'd have one if it turns out to be true.

I don't see why they would consider that an april fools joke - samsung have done it before.
