The 'Official' Screenshot & Tips thread 4 FSX enthusiasts & flight simmers.

I love the BN Islander. Its a step up from the default aircraft but without the complex systems of something like the PMDG JS41. It's a sort of "jump in and fly" aircraft which is great for me as I usually don't have much more than an hours flying time. Anyway the reason I mention it is that Flight1 have it on special at the moment. Once you add in the postage costs (offer is for DVD only - but does ship from UK) it works out about £15.

But where is the GPS???? :D:D:D

Now you're getting up to speed, just hold off a little. I think you can buy too much. :p See what you enjoy doing and then concentrate on making that better.

So much to buy:-
Weather engines
Textures
Ground / airport scenery
Planes
Flight Planners
etc..

I think your probably right, I will try to resist buying things but its gonna be hard :D

You have to prioritise; which addons will you get the best value from at your current stage with FSX.

Do you want to fly a wider range of aircraft, fly over pretty scenery or visit high-fidelity airports / airfields?

Do you want more accurate weather, textures or camera views?

The list goes on and on....FSX ain't a cheap hobby.

Unless you have lots of spare cash to splurge on addons then you have to cherry pick the ones you will get the most benefit from at any given time.

Don't try to buy every UK and Europe scenery, and all the aircraft under the sun right away.

I used the "what is local to me" FSX addon method.

I prioritised addons that are close to my home location (central Scotland)

I bought Edinburgh/Glasgow/Cumbernauld airports from UK2000 <---Best UK airport addons...bar NONE!

I got FTX Scotland from ORBX

And a selection of aircraft that would operate from these locations. I researched real world flights that I could re-enact in FSX.

I gradually expanded my way outwards to the entire UK, then on to Europe

Now that the PMDG 777 is out I may have to finally get into long-haul flights and start getting scenery for outside Europe...gulp £££££

Yeah your right, I am going to give it till the end of next month and see how things are going. I have already bought the game and a stick so I think I should hold off a little.

I have looked at a lot of stuff today and you are right "it ain't a cheap hobby"

Thanks for the advice guys.

Deffo not cheap

Here's a screenshot of the folder on my backup drive that contains all my FSX addons purchased to date.

534Gb's worth of addons...bought over roughly 3 years...total cost somewhere in the region of £2500 - £3000

And that isn't including hardware.....I should've taken up fishing :(

Wow, you could have nearly got a proper pilots license with that amount of spend :D

Looking into it at the moment, Tayside Aviation operate PPL training out of Fife airport which is 30mins drive from me.

Bout 7 grand for the full Cessna 172 PPL training package. (including ground exams and medical)

I've recently restored and sold a classic motorcycle that netted me a pretty decent sum that would nearly cover it all in one go...not sure whether or not to go for it, or buy the missus the Mazda MX-5 she has been pining over all summer

Finally got my PW reset, so I have managed to login.

I'm a long time lurker of the FSX forum here. I'm mainly an airliner flyboy with a VA, but I do love to fly around in the Alabeo Pa-38.

Here's a picture of my last flight in the Tomahawk.

Do you think your experience on fsx will put you in good stead for a ppl?

I'll have a good understanding flight fundamentals and of the aircrafts' systems, but apart from that I'm a complete novice - couldn't imagine anything worse from an instructors point of view that a simmer coming along thinking he knows everything about light aircraft flight :D

For anyone who is interested FlightSim Store is selling some ORBX UK airfields cheap...and FTX Wales for $14 AUD (bout 9 quid)

Orbx's little English GA airfields didn't sell very well;

quote from John Venema on orbx forum:

Posted 14 September 2013 - 12:01 PM

EGHI has sold more copies in its first week than all our other UK airports have in their first three months. So clearly our customers want mid sized airports, not small GA airfields. That gives us a clear direction to embark on, although we will tread cautiously.

So hopefully this means more regional and international UK airports from Orbx, between UK2000 and Orbx we should be sorted for airports for a while to come :D

I believe Gary (UK2000 developer) is currently working on a new version of Heathrow, I seem to remember reading somewhere he said around Xmas for Heathrow release

His future developments are listed in release order on the bottom right of this page

Looking forward to a payware quality Aberdeen, an important UK airport ignored by devs for too long.

The airport chart will have this information.

If you're looking to land with an altitude of 0zero on your altimeter, then you need to know the QFE.

If you're landing with the airfield height above sealevel, that's QNH. And just press B on the keyboard to auto set this.

So you'll need ATC or charts to get this info.
