Apologies if this breaks the rules but I thought this would be the most likely place to get an answer. I just saw something odd out of my window and took a picture it is necessarily a high res picture.

I've done a crude paint to explain it also

This is the view out my kitchen window, bearing roughly 070 in Aberdeen. The contrails were very thin, even thinner I would have said than your usual airliner, but what struck me as most odd was the pattern. Initially I thought it was a plane in holding pattern, but a) I wouldn't think Aberdeen airport is busy enough to merit it, and b) whatever it is was at much too high an altitude to warrant being put in a holding pattern. Then it turned and flew away the way it came.

I'm thinking Russian bomber testing our airspace again?

Thoughts?

Any of you guys running the PMDG 747 for FSX?
I'm looking for a longhaul aircraft that's better than the default but I think the 777 is going to be just too much for my ageing system to handle. the PMDG 737 runs well and so I though that the 747 may be the way to go.

I haven't got it, but I thought the PMDG 747 was also taxing on the system.

If you're not after depth, then there's the new Just Flight 747-200/300 in their 'F Lite' range.

Also, there's been another iFly 737 update.

FSC Weston tomorrow in conjunction with the South West Overload event on Vatsim. :)

Hmm OK thanks for the tip although I might just have to bite the bullet and go for the PMDG I do like their stuff. I've read a couple of bad reviews about the F lite version in that it flies like a brick.... :)

Has anyone else installed the newest update for teh Majestic Dash 8? I think it is something like 1.009. I've noticed since then when I try to fly an ILS approach using autopilot the plane is pulled way off to the right of the runway flying at about 10 - 15 degrees off of runway heading. Now I'm not 100% sure whether it is the update or something I am doing or have done. Up until the patch I had an ILS approach pretty much nailed so I'm a little confused.

If anyone has any pointers I can look at as to what I may have inadvertently clicked excellent or is it possibly the update causing this?

I have had issues at Nice and Innsbruck now. Maybe it is just me. Can't really go wrong on the approach into Nice though.

I'll try again tomorrow and see what happens. It must be me not having something set correctly that I used to have set correctly.

So I did my virtual pilot thing at the Flight Simulation Convention at Weston Super Mare Helicopter museum this weekend just gone.

I took all my kit down on Friday.

The room looked excellent with The South-West ATC console set up. Kudos to the boys, their organisation and set-up if fantastic.

There's a couple of photos of that from last year and this year here:-

Saturday was quiet and Sunday was busy and a blast.

My new PC held up well and it was sliders to the max, with photo scenery. I only heard the 'FSUIPC mem low' bing a few times.

Credit to Bill Casey for the photo (me on the right):

I run FSX on my main PC and all the ancillaries off a 2nd PC.

I use Virtual Audio Cable and people were able to listen into what ATC were saying.

It was great to be a participant. There were about 150 aircraft movements over the weekend.

On the stand at Bristol:

1. Is you plane on HDG or FMS1 when you intercept the ILS?

2. Have you tried turning the 'Visual ILS' squares on using the menus? It may help to see what you're tuned into and what you're following..

I will check what setting I am on. It is probably me, I still haven't mastered everything in the Dash 8 but that is what I like about it. Always learning something new.

Not sure how to turn on those visual ILS squares on in the menus but i'll take a read up on it and find out.

Thanks for the pointers!

Strange. I did a circuit at Nice but used 4L instead of 4R and it all worked fine. I did have REX essential turned off for this and clear skies set. I'll add in some wx next time I test. I wonder if it is due to x-winds? I wouldn't have thought so myself but I'm unsure of the all out capabilities of autopilot when it comes to x-winds.

It turns out I was actually doing nothing wrong at all. I assumed that all ILS approaches flew you down runway heading on the approach, I assumed incorrectly. The ILS approach at Innsbruck is about 6degrees off of runway heading. I only twigged on this when I jumped in my Lancair Legacy to see what it would do on an ILS approach into Innsbruck and noticed on the GPS that the ILS heading wasn't the same as the runways.

Yesterday I discovered TFFJ on St Barts island and found a nice freeware scenery file to update the runway to how it should be. I am finding this airport particularly tricky to make consistently nice landings. Of course I am trying to get some aircraft into it that you really wouldn't in real life, for example the Dash 8 but with only 12 people on board, 8% fuel and sod all cargo.

One thing I've noticed about the Majestic Dash 8 is that it's undercarriage is extremely sturdy. I actually thought I didn't have my realism settings up. It got to the point that the plane was bouncing up and down all on its own accord all over the place? Has anyone else had this happen? Seems you can plough it into the runway at quite a force without a crash occurring. Double checked my realism settings and they are all up. I've a few burning aircraft left at TFFJ and some in the water at the end of the runway :D

Couple of screenshots of TFFJ. Not high res, just showing the crazy downhill runway and steep approach required. I expect many of you already know of this place. It is going to keep me amused for a while. I know a twotter would be the perfect plane to fly in and out of here. Must resist purchasing...
