The 'Official' Screenshot & Tips thread 4 FSX enthusiasts & flight simmers.

Hi guys. Feels like I haven't posted here in absolutely ages. Haven't had that much time to fly recently unfortunately but now having got back up and running with my VA I'm looking for a bit of a change from time to time. Can anyone recommend a nice small basic aircraft for some VFR flying. Feel like I haven't really made the most of ORBX's UK scenery so want to do some low and slow flights and to practice/properly learn non-GPS navigation. I know A2A have got a couple of great new models but I don't need that level of complexity as it's mainly to learn flight planing and navigating properly in VFR. Thanks.

The JustFlight freeware 152 would give you what you're after. If not, the default Cessna is fine for VFR.

Next up would be the BN2 Islander.

Or for faster VFR, the Lancair Legacy.

Hi Guys,

Can any recommend any addons that will make the game better?

Gonna be a long list :)

Scenery wise I've gone for ORBX products get in quick 30% sale ends tonight
I've also bought the Pilots FS Global mesh as well as ORBX Vector and ORBX Global base pack. They're not essential but have made a big difference in my mind. Some of it isn't cheap though and beware it's almost an addiction once you get started!

Aircraft wise you don't get much better than PMDG the 737 is my default short haul aircraft.
Majestic for the Dash 8 is wonderful but has a steep learning curve.
A2A Simulations offer some superb light aircraft models.

All of this is payware though if you want freeware then there is plenty of stuff out there but do some research as it's very easy to try and download everything and then find half of it is crap, you then end up with a messy laggy FSX and the re-install process gets tiresome.

Good luck though and most of all enjoy it!!!

Sale will end Midnight some Oz timezone so in the next hour or 2. Don't wait for this evening!

As Brian says there is a long list we could create, have you any genre or location you're particularly keen on?

Does ORBX Hammer FPS?

Has anyone used REX before?

I use "REX essentials +overdrive" for textures and Active sky next for weather.
FPS is fine 20 - 30 fps when flying around normally or at altitude, if you get near a busy airport and you have a 3rd party airport installed then it can tail off but you should be fine wiht the spec of your machine. its better than mine and I don't complain....:p Is hould mention that UK2000 make some excellent airports as well.

If you're seriously interested in adding lots of 3rd party stuff then you should also read through the various forums including this one for tips on tweaking and setting up FSX to get the most out of it. smooth flight is more important than FPS in my opinion. A nice smooth flight at 15 FPS is still more than acceptable, it's only if FSX is stuttering and freezing up on approach that it gets really annoying.

^ As above I'm using REX Essentials + Overdrive and Active Sky Next for weather. Nice combination (REX v4 is the latest one btw) and as for FPS anywhere around 25-30fps is pretty standard when in and around airports in payware aircraft but when flying high its a lot better. It all depends on your machine and what overclock you can achieve. As for which add-ons will be best for you, have a think about what and where you want to fly. ORBX is all well and good but if your flying high in tubes such as the PMDG 737 NGX/777 then maybe your better off going with FTX Global and airport scenery. If you like low and slow then ORBX can't be beaten. I quite like to fly a mixture so have a bit of a mix (sorry wallet!)

As for a starting point
1. Weather - Active Sky Next or Opus
2. Clouds/Water/Runway/Taxiway textures - REX 4
3. Heavies - PMDG 737 NGX or 777, Aerosoft Airbus X Extended A320/321
4. Mid size - Majestic Dash 8 Q400 (absolutely love this aircraft and very friendly on the frames), Aerosoft Twin Otter Extended
5. Smaller aircraft I'm not too sure about but for the most realistic models the two outstanding ones right now are the A2A 172 and Piper Cherokee. Can't really go wrong with anything from Carenado or Alabeo (parent company is Carenado).
6. As for scenery depends on where you want to fly. Worth looking at FTX Global (basically replaces the default textures all over the world).

A few shots from recent flights. :) Completely unedited.

PS thanks for the suggestions earlier on the A2A aircraft, they look great but I probably won't use them to their fullest so picked up the Alabeo PA38 Tomahawk, nice model and pretty basic but fine for a bit of VFR.
