The 'Official' Screenshot & Tips thread 4 FSX enthusiasts & flight simmers.

Thanks Blue. I have been selecting the arrival, i.e. runway and ILS etc then the STAR. I think it might be I'm selecting the wrong STAR for the direction I'm approaching from. I've been flying low and slow and gliders for too many years. It's only since getting the Dash 8 that I've started to try and learn more about the equipment in aircraft. I'll take a look at that software you mention too.

I'm interested in getting into flight sim after a little trip in a c152 and I've been messing about a bit in DCS.

Does anyone have a recommendation which single serious sim I should invest my time and money in?
From what I gather X-plane 10 is newer and arguably more advanced than FSX, but FSX has more of everything. I don't really have the time or money to test multiple sims in detail.

Thanks

I'm biased towards FSX. It's cheap, the default aircraft are good enough.

There's a freeware C152 from Just Flight which would start you off.

And for quick-nice scenery, get the ORBX package of where you'd like to initially fly.

I can't comment on X-Plane 10. But, there's plenty of scenery, add-ons and development on that platform, so flip a coin and off you go..

That 777 does look very nice indeed! I take both have fully functional FMS systems in them?

My most complex aircraft currently is the Dash 8 which I do enjoy flying and partly why I am struggling to decide between the 737 and 777 as the Dash 8 is OK for shorter flights. I will say I'm still not an all out pro though I can get flight plans online and input them into the FMS and fly a pretty realistic flight path. It's only when I get near the the destination I struggle as the FMS must have go around paths in it or something as there are always lines going everywhere. It is a shame PMDG don't do discount for purchasing two off items at the same time.

may I ask where have you been getting the flight plans that you can load into the FMS?

Thanks. I'm leaning more towards x-plane atm just because it's more modern and seems to do everything FSX does, it's just hard to get over how big the FSX fan base is.

FSX is a love hate relationship. To its credit, when it was released in 2006, it offered the world to fly in, detailed large cities, worldwide ATC coverage, real -world weather, multiplayer and so on.

It you're like me, you spend the same amount of hours tweaking as you do flying.

All modern developers use so many tricks to get the best out of the 32 bit codebase.

IMO, when PMDG release their fleet to X-Plane, I will think about converting. The only thing that stops me is the amount of money I've spent on FSX And 'better the devil you know'.

I just rediscovered a copy of FS2004 (over 4CDs lol) so that should keep me busy while I decide :D. Flight sim world doesn't appear cheap, especially looking a controller cost :o

Prepar3D v2.3 just released today!!

See the list of updates

Quote from Lockheed developer blog

We hope you find Prepar3D v2.3 continues to bring you the most immersive learning, simulation and training platform available.
We are excited to bring this patch and update to Prepar3D v2.3 to the community today, and have already begun development on several new and exciting features for Prepar3D v2.4.
Keep an eye out on Prepar3D.com for new developer blogs in the future outlying the new features coming in v2.4.

This is the key reason I've left FSX for good - ongoing development on the P3D platform!!! :D Happy days

How are you finding P3D. I bought v2.0 just after release but encountered far too many OOM errors with it even in the stock aircraft so went back to FSX. Any idea if that's been resolved at all. Tempted to give it another go but such a shame I wouldn't be able to use the NGX.

I think they made some major changes with one of the patches to help this, tree memory reduced 17x or something silly. I've only had P3D crash on me once and that was when interacting with the in built ATC client.

Cheers guys. I need to do a reinstall soon of FSX and Windows at some point soon so may have another dabble with P3D.

Made the mistake of only giving my FSX drive a 120GB SSD and now its full where as my OS drive has the best part of 200GB free! Not to mention I want to go back to Windows 7 from 8.1 as the joystick disconnect problems still occur every so often.

Some shots from flights I have done recently. Some of these are from P3Dv2:

Hey man,
I'll pay you for some screen shots.

Hi fellow Simmers,

If you fly on VATSIM, there's an event on at EGBB Birmingham this weekend. Two days of full ATC with Real Ops and Overload events.

More info here

You don't need to book a flight to take part - why not fly in/out for us and you may even win a prize!

Cheers,

FB..

Edit:

It's the Birmingham Overload event on Vatsim this weekend.

I might not be able to fly as we have house guests this weekend.

Sorry Andrew, just saw your post. Thanks for promoting the event.

FBi7, no problem

For those of you that don't know Vatsim, they provide an air traffic control service for your flights with the intention of making things as real as possible.

You, as a pilot will interact with real-life controllers.

Controllers will need have a Vatsim qualification to control.

Pilots don't need to be qualified, but it helps to have a good understanding of what you should be doing.

Today, I'm assuming all stations will be manned at EGBB.

Delivery: Validate and clear you for your submitted flight plan.
Ground: Pushback and taxi service around the airfield.
Tower: Runway control, takeoffs and landings.
Radar: Control of the airspace around Birmingham

Whilst the event it going on, have a look here:

Feel free to ask questions. :)

I purchased the 777 this month. I just did a stint in China for work again so will have a little bonus in next months wages to get the 737.

I now see what you mean about the automation in the 777. It is very clever how it all works though it is going to take me some time to get to grips with it all. The initial FMC setup is quite complex, at least at the moment it is for me. I have a whole lot of reading and learning to do now!

Quick question ref the 777 to those who have it. I completed the training flight in the manual today which all went well. Now just to get to grips with inputting flight plans for other routes. After the flight I thought I'd do a VFR circuit, no AP at all just for a laugh. Those GE engines are very powerful when the aircraft is light! One thing I did notice though is that the aircraft will not allow you to bank past a certain angle? I take that this is as things are in real life but was wondering can that feature be turned off?

For goodness sake man. Think of your virtual passengers.. :D

I can't say I've tried this.. Is this you flying with AP turned of and trying to bank more than 35 degrees?

As for the powerful engines, in the FMC you can do reduced thrust take offs if you're carrying a lighter load, and have loads of runway to use.

I hope you're enjoying the plane.
