The 'Official' Screenshot & Tips thread 4 FSX enthusiasts & flight simmers.

I just cant land the Dash :( I'm either going too fast or it just slows down too much!! Just bounced it 5 times :o

Love the plane but if i cant land not much use flying it really

It's actually a tricky aircraft to land in real life.
I've flown on them a few times with FlyBe, and after a particularly hard landing, I went up to the cockpit to ask if it was normal, to which the FO responded by telling me that the spoilers automatically deploy forcing the front wheel down harder than normally. If they've modelled this feature of the aircraft, then the addon makers certainly know their stuff!

Well I think I have learnt a lot tonight. I didnt manage to get my stick so hopefully i will get it on Tuesday.

I did some free flights tonight in the Cessna C172SP (has sat nav so I dont get lost which is good lol) managed a clean ish flight from Doncaster to Humberside, only a shirt trip but managed to take off and land with out any major issues.

I struggled with the trim a fair bit at first but think I got the hang of it in the end, only problem I have left really atm is taxi'ing, im using the 0 and enter keys on my number pad to steer but as soon as i press either it seems to go full lock and i go round in circles lol

overall I have really enjoyed tonight, steep learning curve for me but fun all the same :)

Depending on how he meant by 'automatically', its a pretty standard feature for any airliner with spoilers. They are 'armed' by the pilots on the final approach so that they automatically deploy once you have touched down (a.k.a weight on wheels). You want to stop efficiently and avoid any gusts or whatnot from accidentally blowing you back into the air. Spoilers aid this by:

a) Being great big air-brakes that create a lot of drag (obviously)

b) Disrupting (or 'spoiling') the airflow over the wing and effectively killing the lift its still generating. Also has the side effect of placing even more weight on the wheels to further increase the wheel-brakes efficiency.

As it doesn't really affect the tailplane and hence rotation I have a sneaky suspicion the FO was using it as a scapegoat to cover his dodgy landing up :p

Well done. Just keep letting it be enjoyable and it will become very rewarding.

I thought FlyBe will be replacing their turboprops with jets in the future. So maybe this is all just an interim problem? :p

I watched 'Ultimate Airport' on Sky Anytime last night:

And in homage:-

(Yes it's at EGFF, give me a break..);)

And one at Popham::D

Yeah I know what spoilers are and how they work :P

<--- Simming for over 15 years and real world flying experience

He told me they had no choice (so they're not armed). They're deployed regardless.

Yeah not easy at all. I have read/been told that the Dash do have hard landings
Yes Majestic have added that feature with the spoilers deploying once you land.

Need to keep practising.

Nice shots mate. I think Popham's runway might be a little long for the T7 :p

Been doing some more reading and have a couple of questions:

1: I see a lot of virtual airlines when I search on google, what exactly are they and are they worth joining?

2: Vatsim seem to do a P1 examine, is this worth doing as a noob or do I need to learn more on my own first?

A virtual airline basically models the operations of a real life airline. So using the same fleet, same routes etc. I belong to two. They also use software to record your flights. Qantas even have cabin announcements :p

Qantas - They are very good. I use them because they got a wide variety of aircraft choice plus you can fly their code share partners e.g. Jetstar, Emirates, American, BA and a load more.

Thomson - I don't use them as much as I did. They have a very good setup too but you quite limited to what you can fly and fly too.

There are many. BA, Virgin, Fedex, American, United, South West etc etc

Blue will be best to answer the P1 stuff as he has his. I want to do mine still.

A P1 rating is a theory and practical exam to make the most of flying on their network. Although it's not a mandatory requirement to hold it to fly online.

They provide free training and course material, e.g. a Powerpoint presentation.

I would recommend going online with us one evening to get set up with the software and basics.

They do their best to mimic real life so in kind you need to know the phonetic alphabet, and the terminology that goes with flying.

Thanks guys, I take it I need to be pretty proficient to fly with a virtual airline and on VATSIM?

Can you send me your voice comms details and maybe we can arrange something?

Thanks again guys, everyone is very helpful.

Did anyone have any pointers regarding my taxi'ing problems (ie I use the num pad and all i do is spin in circles when ever I press left or right?)

meh, fair enough.

Don't use the keyboard. It should by default, once you have your extreme 3d pro plugged in, tie the nosewheel steering to the twist rudder controls. It should be much easier to handle then!
