***The Official Starfield Thread*** (As endorsed by TNA)

Since when was goty decided by if a game has an fov slider or dlss at launch?
Also, this game arrived in better shape than:

Cyberpunk 2077
The Callisto Protocol
The Last of Us
Dead Space
Star Wars: Jedi Survivor

And probably more I'm forgetting.

Honestly, I thought Starfield was going to be a bug-ridden mess that I'd have to wait at least six months to play whilst Bethesda (and the modders) fixed it up - I'm really happy to be proven wrong!

I didn’t reply to you. Think you are a bit confused

No ofcause you didn't

Yeah it’s been spot on for me so far. Couple of niggles but in a much better state than most aaa this year

GOTY is not decided by DLSS, HDR or FOV. Look at Elden Ring (a game I didn’t like) because it was GOTY and only had HDR and was a bug ridden mess on launch.

Starfield has no game breaking bugs for the majority and looks way better than something like Elden Ring IMHO. For me though BG3 edges it for GOTY

I'm enjoying it so far, however, the performance is surprisingly poor for a game that looks like a polished version of FO4. Cyberpunk max with RT on, no issues. This at low / medium, frame drops to sub 40.

@TNA 12 or so hours later, just discovered the status/stat screen :p

This game definitely gets better as the hours go on. Have fully scanned my first few planets (great for XP and credits) and then a distress call quest opened up another couple of hour quest.

I mean this game is absolutely huge in scope and as I’ve said, it seems to be a real slow burn.

First impressions...

*** console FOV ( yeh yeh I know can be modded )
*** lighting, blacks should be black!
*** WOKE, THEY/THEM - SHE/HER ?! - Why not nothing, just select either a female or male, don't even need to say anything!

Baldurs Gate 3 is going to kick this games arse in the ratings :D

Cringe.

I think the best way to describe all this colour talk etc is comparing Dead Space with Dead Space Remake.

That game is a prime example of the original colour grade vs the modern interpretation. The original grade worked because at the time of release OLED displays weren't a thing and LCD panel tech was such that blacks literally looked grey anyway and remained so for every generation of LCD tech after, so a game could have the purest of black levels but it wouldn't matter because black tones would still look grey as we were limited to the display tech available until the last few years whereby gaming geared OLED TVs have hit the market which PC gamers were using, and in the last 12-18 months, OLED monitors with even higher specs.

It's clear to my eyes that Starfield wasn't developed with OLED displays, if it was then we'd see a more Dead Space Remake style level of black control. People will say well that's FO4 just improved, maybe, but those previous Bethesda games also came out when OLED on PC wasn't a thing, and black levels being poor wouldn't have been that noticeable given the display tech available to the mainstream either.

Dead Space

Apart from the shader/traversal stuttering, Dead Space remake was actually in very good shape from memory? It even got near universal praise for being so good among reviewers. I even re-watched the DF review and all they had to say was that it had those stutters whilst everything else was very good. The difference here in terms of performance and tech on Starfield is that a wealth of settings and quality of life features that are standard and fully expected on a modern PC game are completely missing in Starfield, all of these have been mentioned in the thread. That and the inventory system and other game menus that look and feel like they are designed for consoles proves to me that the game was merely ported to PC using console versions as the primary focus, with the only extra effort put it being first-run shader pre-compilation.

Well, those (really annoying) stutters are still in Dead Space and EA/Motive has seemingly abandoned it - based on my time with it, I'd absolutely consider Starfield, at-launch, a far superior product.

I think your quality-of-life observations are valid criticisms but Bethesda was purchased to make XBox games - also, they haven't really been PC-focussed since Morrowind - Oblivion was a big XBox release for them.

Still, I have no doubt the modding community will step up to address a lot of PC users' complaints - the number of mods for Skyrim is quite staggering and continues to grow to this day.

I'm just here exploring places and talking to people and enjoying myself. On my non-oled monitor :p

I keep getting side tracked byt things instead of following one quest chain.

There’s so much to do, I was just exploring a planet when a new quest chain opened as I jumped in and I’m on a huge tangent again. It’s Bethesdas best quest work, right up there with Witcher 3 imo. Now I’m getting to grips with the menus and shortcuts through them I’m finding it much more enjoyable.

Gunplay is much improved too. I’m learning to take cover much more.

Definitely some patches needed and QoL improvements, but then the same has been true for many games that then got even better.

It’s my GOTY. Actually the most fun I’ve had in a game for years.
