I think it’s hard to put much stock into user reviews anymore. Between fanboys and review bombers it’s almost impossible to get anything objective.

I’m really enjoying it, even if it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

I’ll have 100s off hours in this by the time I’ll eventually uninstall it and get my moneys worth at least tenfold.

It has always been better to try a game for yourself. In the 90s and early noughties it was from disks and CDs with games magazines. Now in the digital age it is possible to buy, try and refund if needed. Or you can get one month on game pass.

I do wish Steam would allow longer than two hours trials though. Especially if a game has unskipable intros, or very long shader compiling routines at start up.

Yeah, YouTubers can generate so much drama and clicks from essentially nothing.

You see the video thumbnail and it’s like “STARFIELD… UNPLAYABLE?!?!!!?!” and its all just clickbait.

Although I will admit, watching those types of reviews of games which are legit terrible is great entertainment, the reviews of Gollum were hilarious..

I normally don’t check the rating but did so out of curiosity after this pointless post. Absolutely agree that it must be a terrible game if only 78% of people playing in Steam like it. Oh the shame, how can Bethesda ever look at themselves in the mirror again.

Go hang your head in shame Bethesda because only 4 out it every 5 people think Starfield is good.
its a 7/10 game at best right now.

game lacks variety and content.
no space whales? no space krakens? no space squids?

every planet is as worthless as the next, I thought they said some stuff was hand crafted? they meant the few main cities? everything else is copy/paste with no variety.

there's like 10 different creatures in the game if that.
AI is worse than a year 2000 game, even the original counterstrike and battlefield 1942 has better AI.

the only reason to play is to accept quests and then fast travel and get them turned in as quickly as possible, there's no real gameplay.

go build an outpost? for what? what purpose do they serve? meaningless and a waste of time like most of the content in the game.

most of you probably didn';t put in enough hours yet to realise the core loop of the game is dog poop bad.

I would agree at the moment. It's a 7/10 for me and gamespot/ign/pcgamer etc were pretty much spot on.

It's not really bad...it's just nowhere near as well written and crafted as a lot of recent RPG games. It also looks terrible for the way it performs. The engine is looking very dated/tired in a lot of ways now.

I think it would have been far better sticking to one extremely well crafted system with like 8 hand crafted planets and some moons. I don't think the 1000 planets/procedurally generated stuff adds anything.

I have to admit I wasn't over excited about the game up until release but thought would give it a go as was part of GP.

Very impressed so far and lost 5 hours into it by accident over the last day or so. Graphics on the ships etc. Is pretty lovely. Character and design style you can tell it's Bethesda straight away from my limited past experience on fallout games.

I think as most have said it's by no means perfect but at the same time I have enjoyed every bit have played and bugs have given me a laugh lol

Hit a bit of a wall where with no warning where I don't have a required skill to do a quest on mars so I need to work out how to level up and be able to get a skill point in lockpicking quickly (you most likely guessed the guest).

But hey, that's not a failing of the game, that's just me not normally playing this kind of stuff though and being forward thinking enough, fact it has me hooked is a good thing :)

Perfectly valid point of view and no issues with that. But that’s one opinion from many and the person I responded to hates it as a game (which is fine). I was just curious why he/she/they felt that “only” 78% positive rating was a poor score. Or why even mention it at all if you find the game so bad, just move on.

The more I play the better it gets. 9/10 game for me still. The difference being that I recognise that’s my opinion and am personally having a blast, where as too many gamers like @arknor think it’s that rating because he says so. That’s not to say he doesn’t make some valid points.

Which RPG game? I’m yet to play one where everything in the world responds this well to how you play and the choices you’ve made.

Very true. I didn’t think it was possible, but the gaming community has become more toxic and polarised then ever.

That’s not to say there aren’t flaws and I suspect many are due to the engine and Bethesdas design. Unfortunately many of these flaws are linked to the pros of the engine what makes it unique. Some are part of the charm for me, some they’re going to need to work on for ESVI.

In terms of gameplay aspect, that is true, it is completely subjective. I'm having a blast and for this year in terms of new games, probably easily my GOTY atm. The only thing which has dragged the score down in this aspect for me is all the cutscenes/loading, back and forth in menus.

But from a technical perspective i.e. basic features in 2023 for a triple a title, graphics for the performance etc. the game isn't even a 7/10 here, heck I wouldn't even give it a 5/10, Alex from DF summed it up perfectly. The only and main saving grace for starfield here is the modding community and the lack of stutters when traversing etc. but had this game been on a different engine, say for example UE, I dread to imagine how much worse it would have been.....

I am about 30 hours in and would put it at 8.5/10. Want to give it a 9 but there is just something about it not quite hitting that level just yet.

Still doing all the Ryujin quests. Quite a few it seems!

I went looking for a key quest person and couldn’t find them. After running around I finally narrowed their location down to… inside a toilet cubicle.

Do I wait or just go on in? Asking for a friend

I just opened the door and they were standing there unperturbed at my lack of toilet etiquette. I think they must have just finished.

It just feels a little twee a lot of the time.

"Hello random stranger that just walked up to me, will you go and fetch some very expensive doodad for me!?"

I know that's been par for the course in Bethesda games, but it just doesn't seem to work thematically here for me. Something feels off.

Maybe it's a lack of exposition for a lot of things.

It's hard to put my finger on, but it is making me think "lol that's stupid" far too much. Other games just make everything seem a bit more believable from a human nature stance. I don't really get a feeling for my character's place in the world like I do with a lot of other games.

I don't know, maybe I'm taking it too seriously and just prefer grittier games like Witcher, Cyberpunk, RDR2.

It's disappointing how seemless the game isn't! After playing no mans sky, I guess I've now come to expect to have a seemless space experience from a triple A title like this, other than perhaps entering a building.

I also am disappointed that the game has lifts to get around, but doesn't use the lifts as a "loading" screen so that again it feels seemless to go from one area to the next.

I'm finding to get from one place to the next it feels like I'm loading way more than anything else. I run to my ship, load to go inside, then load to go to space, then when in space, I don't fly, I just load to the next planet, I click a button to scan the area I want, where I load there and watch a little video of the game flying for me. Then I run to a building, load to enter, then finally I'm at the place.

I feel very lost as a result of this. Where as with skyrim I know, go north and I end up discovering winter fell, head another random direction and I find a cave, etc.

Perhaps this is more an issue for the start where you haven't discovered areas so have to "travel" there manually?

Some of the areas are so small too. I boarded a ship and even the whole ship wasn't one load. There was a smallish area first, which then had anothe loading screen after that!

It is immensely jarring coming from other open world games that have barely any loading at all.

Thankfully they are only a couple of seconds each.

My crashing issues are 100% the DLSS3/FG mod - works flawlessly albeit choppy AF without it...

Comments on the mod mention it a lot too so messing with the config to try and find a settled solution but it's not looking good thus far.

Things cut down in to small maps is an engine limitation.

Also it feels like they have purposely tried not to make it feel like a space sim by cutting out most of the space travel parts between planets. That is to do with the target audience.

Zero crashes here using dlss mod, at least just the upscaling aspect of it. If you're using special k? There might be a conflict especially combined with FG
