***The Official Starfield Thread*** (As endorsed by TNA)

Yeah, I mean the mirror thing is a small thing really but its just something which bugs me in an RPG, I go to all these lengths to create a character and background, I'm told about how immersive and realistic things are in a game and yet all of a sudden all my characters are vampires who are invisible in mirrors :D

Its okay, its a Beth game.. someone will mod it in .

People are dunking on it because Microsoft stopped it being released on the PS5:

Also the whole pronouns aspect got overblown by some edgelords. Then the AMD/Bethesda stole the DLSS,etc.

Very sad people, the types of people who really need to go outside and touch grass once in awhile.

Mate I used to rent game boy and megadrive games from the local 'paper shop', now that's how you test out games! So it's always been possible regardless of the medium. People just LOVE to moan despite not trying it themselves, BuT tEh InTeRnEtZ sAiD...
Like that Gollum game, loads of people moaned about that because of what the internets said instead of trying it for themselves. :D

Isn't it very taxing to have mirrors and reflections in games? I seem to remember years ago watching about how hard it is to do well, especially as light effects get better, it is very intensive work to accurately make a mirror work
Might be taxing, but isnt that why we've spent hundreds and hundreds of sterlings on these fancy CPUs and GPUs ? :)

It just feels a little twee a lot of the time.

"Hello random stranger that just walked up to me, will you go and fetch some very expensive doodad for me!?"

I know that's been par for the course in Bethesda games, but it just doesn't seem to work thematically here for me. Something feels off.

Maybe it's a lack of exposition for a lot of things.

It's hard to put my finger on, but it is making me think "lol that's stupid" far too much. Other games just make everything seem a bit more believable from a human nature stance. I don't really get a feeling for my character's place in the world like I do with a lot of other games.

I don't know, maybe I'm taking it too seriously and just prefer grittier games like Witcher, Cyberpunk, RDR2.

Yes, there are a good few of those. Par for the course of Bethesda games I guess where the world does kind of revolve around the main player, where as other RPGs you’re more a part of the world and slot into it more naturally.

I have been more impressed with this game though in terms of the dialogue and options that react to what you do, certainly in comparison to previous Bethesda games.

It’s an old formula and a lot of gaming mechanics have moved on, but something about Bethesda games just click for me in a way that no other does, even those top games that I’ve enjoyed like RDR2, Last of Us, God of War etc.

The problem is that the biggest sell of the creation engine, where ever item can have a physical presence in the world, isn’t novel anymore and really holds it back. It’s always been a hugely inefficient engine, I’m perhaps surprised modern hardware still can’t deal with it.

On the one hand I can’t wait for ES6, but on there other perhaps it’s reminded me that there will be some compromises.

Typically mirrors were done by having a mirrored version of the entire scene so what you looking at wasn't a reflection at all. Screen-space reflections can't be used for mirrors as they're 'mirroring' geometry that's already been drawn - they're useful for things like floors or bodies of water.

RT should bring some improved reflections but even Cyberpunk can't reflect the player's geometry (weirdly).

Any changes in UE5 engine that could bring this without it being as taxing on hardware then? Honestly not looked into it tbh.

Since it was started before the Microsoft acquisition, I have a sneaking suspicion that Starfield will be the last 'real' Bethesda game - these games take so long to make and cost soooo much money that I wouldn't be surprised if Todd Howard and Pete Hines bail before ESVI is released.

Microsoft has an abysmal track record of managing their studios.

Possibly, but wasn’t that before Phil Spencer took over? Hopefully they leave it alone or we’ll end up with another mess like modern Halo.

Phil Spencer has been head of XBox for 9 years now (supposedly the Bethesda purchase in 2018 was to prevent Starfield becoming a Sony exclusive).

The way I see it, Starfield is that rare product that was in (early) development at the time of the acquisition and benefitted from essentially unlimited resources and QA time since the XBox division really needed a 'win' - it was originally supposed to release a year earlier in a state that I believe a former Bethesda employee likened to Cyberpunk at launch.

As good as the final game is, I can't imagine Bethesda ever having those resources again - as I said, these games are really expensive and since the game is effectively being given away for 'free' on GamePass, there's going to be different metrics for 'success' than just sales.

Lol, I post some light humour about a random funny moment to lighten the thread and we end up with long posts about why the AI sucks compared to (insert ancient game here). I have had AI in Starfield flank me rather than sit and wait to get picked off. Or lob grenades when I do the usual cower behind boxes to pick off stupid AI. Then again they are happy to rush into a choke point one by one to get picked off. So still the usual meh AI overall.

I certainly don't remember the AI in Deus Ex being remotely special. In fact I remember the AI guards doing the "hey what was that" when you very cleary were seen, then you duck under cover and a few seconds later they do the "it must have been nothin". Or the fact they completely ignored dead bodies lying around :D

I'm not ragging on Deus Ex, I loved that game but please don't try to make it that somehow the Starfield AI has "regressed" since 2000. The problem is that every area of PC game development has stagnated apart form graphics IMHO.

why add it to the game though? is there even a single instance where you are referred to by a pronoun?

I don't remember it happening. it's just panering to the wokes same as the forced diversity and almost 0 white people in the game

someone made a mod that takes out the pronoun crap when you create a character btw, nexusmods removed it lol....
its on other mod sites that have no bias though

Agreed, but it is scummy of Bethesda to sell out to MS like that and deny previous fans of ALL platforms the ability to play it - not at all siding with PS players, just think it's not a nice way to treat your loyal fans, and in general even new comers that want to play even just 1 of your games?

I don't get the whole anger for games that are exclusive to this platform etc
PS have Granturismo, Xbox has whatever and then PC games that are not on consoles. Just get over it or if you want to play it go buy one of each platform. That's what they want, you and your money.
