The **Official** Test Drive Unlimited for PC thread

Oh give up will you. Im not defending the game. It isn't a sim, its an arcade game. As i quoted you (and its very clear to anyone that reads it), you said one thing then changed it. Thats all im saying. If you are not man enought to admit that then fine - don't. Just don't moan when someone picks you up on it.

this is what makes the interweb funny, you so need to prove a point you turn to the 'manliness' card
id suggest you try adding something beneficial to the thread and not trying to win a pointless arguement , you come off looking stupid

a thread is open to debate, if someone says something you dont like, dont get all tetchy
ive put forward a valid point, the driving is extremely basic and not challenging whether your behind the wheel of an audi or ferrari
the races are in no way thrilling or tense so it becomes tedious and begins to feel like a grind session, those who havent played it might just care to know these things

i take beta testing quite serious, and was quite active on the tdu beta forum, submitting bugs and problems to the devs
ive got the old microsoft forcefeedback wheel + pedals which i was hoping i could use with this game,
it was unplayable when plugged in, after a few emails to the devs i got a final response which basically said, buy a new wheel, its not compatible!"!!
luckily i borrowed a friends logitech wheel which worked fine, but i was well peeved they wouldnt add support for the msoft device

i had played the game enough to see its good and bad points, lots of compatibility problems, sound issues, controller problems , lag and server probs etc
like beano stated, wait until its released and see what state its in, as PC gamers dont want straight ports of console games as we know how bad they turn out

this is what ...... turn out

Whatever.

Anyway something meaningful to this thread and back OT. I own a Logitech DFP wheel and it worked fine, no probs what so ever. I would recommend turning the turning degree down from 900 to 450. It helps when trying to make any sharp U turns and tight corners.

I encountered a few issues during the open beta test. It crashed a few times but i couldn't get any correlation between the crashes. The graphics went a bit screwy each time i loaded but a quick flick back to windows and back again sorted. All of which were reported to the devs so hopefully something will have been done about before the full release.... but don't hold your breath!

I'm looking forward to the full release. It will make a change just being able to blast round the island rather than the serious racing of LFS im used to - which is the game to go for if you are looking for serious sim racing. TDU is not a sim.

Bah humbug I made a official thread and there was already this. Search failed me!

Anyway, questions from a TDU virgin.

Is the gameplay to get credits for cars hard? I am going to have to invest a great deal of time (like a MMORPG) to advance very little? Or can I play on and off and still get new cars and upgrades? I have never played so don't know what car you start with...or if you keep it. I really don't know, do you have a account which stores your car online or do you just play on a particular server and nothing is saved?

its akin to grinding with small rewards for completing a challenge/race so can take a while to build up which isnt a bad thing and you can repeat a race over and over to build up creds
cant really comment on the online as i played mostly single player building up a car pool then upgrading them whilst exploring the island
from the beta and time i put in, i'd say its a good game but very repetative, has great gfx and longevity

There are no servers as such (not in the normal BF2, COD, HL2 etc... sense anyway). You join the master server and away you go. I think as you move to another area of the island you will 'switch' servers but it is transparent.

As far earning credits it is easy. After 7-8 hours gameplay i had a F430, Lambo and a Ford GT. But unlocking bikes and upgrades i never got round to on the Beta. But even after getting those great cars i was still on ~15% into the game according to my game progress. Thats why i cant wait for the full thing as im missing a lot of the game it seemed! A week on Friday! Cant wait :D

what sort of control device do you use? I have just a keyboard and playstation style logitech gamepad. Is a game pad ok? Because i use it for GTA-San Andreas as I play better with it, but not sure how its for a proper racing game.

Got this from my preorder today:

"As you may already be aware, the UK release date for Test Drive Unlimited has changed to 16-Mar-2007. Changes to release dates are relatively common in the videogames industry and are unfortunately beyond our control."

Seriously annoyed now...though Oblivion was worse "you order has changed from 25 November 2006, to March 2007". lol.

No-one seems to really know the confirmed date, the 2nd and 16th the main dates being passed about on the EU Atari forums, with all this extra time this game should be released faultless

Atrai.co.uk website says PC-DVD version is released 16/03/2007.

However, EBGames (USA) 20/03/2007. And its very rare a game is released here before the US get it. So its either were gonna be very luck or its released sometime after the 20th. Like 23rd March.

I really hope its 16th. I hate waiting for a game which just seems to be getting further and further from release.

edit: Atari US site says 20th. So I don't know, will we be lucky or unlucky and have it released before or after the US? :D

still not sure whether to get this or not. I enjoyed the beta loads, driving round the island unlocking all the car garages, but the bikes were a big dissapointment.

I played it with my DFP for a while at 450 deg but it just got boring so i switched to a x360 controller. thats what it was designed for after all :). imo its too arcadey for my DFP.

i have to agree with whoever it was that said the cars felt too similar. only different was speed, and some cars felt heavier. I dunno though, i enjoyed playing it, and the island is just incredible.

Ok, I've just read up on this game and it looks absolutely amazing. Didn't play the beta as I just thought it was a run of the mill racing game. I'm definitely buying this.

From what I've read the release date is March 23rd, could anyone elaborate? :)
