*** The Official Tribes: Ascend Thread! ***

Nice video showing some routes for all maps, few don't work anymore due to rock bounce nerfs, but plenty still do.

Also, it's not patching.. just some server maintenance.

The NASL LAN finals are happening in the next few days i think, my guess is that they are holding off until they are finished.

I managed to play a bit tonight. Spent 3 hours from scratch and quite enjoyed myself. Once i got the hang of skiing it made life easier. I even got a medal for a 213KM/H flag grab :) I capped a few times too. Im not sure how many xp points i should be earning but i only have just over 11,000. I have also been struggling to hit with weapons as the whole jetpack thing adds another dimension to play plus im not used to the weapons.

I have only just scratched the surface but so far i quite like it. The last map i played was a little tedious though as the enemy flag carrier was camped in his base being defended havily and there was only 1 door in. Out of a team of around 10 players there was only me and one other player attemting to retrieve the flag. Grrr.

There is an awful lot to this game and i have a lot to learn but so far it has a thumbs up. iIdid a few freestyle route flag grab an exits tonight as well, some of which i capped. It felt good! :p

Going to try and get some games in tomorrow too.

Oh and my tribes player name is BuffetSlayer :)

Cheers

lol have you guys tried TDM? I just had a quick go. Grabbed the flag at the start and held it until the end of the round with x37 flag held medals lol. Quite fun skiing round and round the arena with a whole team chasing you and failing :p Overall the modes pretty nooby though.

Samsung, can you change my OCUK -> player ref to 1kiwi - Kiw1Fruit within the OP

Here is a flamboyant picture to 'cement' this new name :p

Thats a decent grab for 3 hours of playing mate. If you have a mic we hang out on mumble while playing. As you say tribes is a never ending learning curve. Each class has so many aspects that can always be improved on. What level did you get to last night? If your planning on playing regularly then getting a booster is worth it.

Will update yours and slayers after work. Glad you saw sense and changed it. Just need to persuade melur to go melon now.

For starting out the starter pack is a good way to go. You get enough gold to unlock a few different classes and weapons as well as a booster and VIP status I think. I pretty much have a booster going all the time and with VIP I have no trouble unlocking a few weapons a week. Shame you guys missed the double xp days as for the first map won each day you would earn 12k xp if you had VIP and booster.

Before you go unlocking stuff maybe let us know what roles or class you are looking at and we can explain which weapons and perks are best so you don't waste it on needless things.

Btw guys, how does mumble work? I'm at work so cant download it. Do you have to join a server like on teamspeak? Or?

I have to say, in retrospect, I think Tribes is way more tactical than Q3. It does remind me of an old Q3 mod called Weapons Factory Arena though.

I think i have the ability to be ok on Tribes, I just need to learn the mechanics. I spent all of my time last night playing as a basic soldier or pathfinder with default load outs. I feel like I am at a distinct disadvantage because there are so many options and things to buy or upgrade and I dont have a clue what any of it does :( Funny thing though, I capped more times as a soldier than I did as a path finder :p

I also capped a couple of times from llama grabs too. I think it may have had something to do with the opposing team being rubbish but also what I call 'noob moves'. I busted a load all over the server and I think people were so busy thinking "wtf is he doing" they forgot to shoot at me! :p

Just one thing, during the games I was earning 'swiss bank account' credits. Are these the same as gold? Or are they only used in the server you are currently playing?

Only when I left the server last night Tribes crashed and exited to desktop with a "Ran out of video memory" error. It had worked fine for 3hrs......

Anyways I asm not sure if the swiss bank credits are the same as gold because when I loaded Tribes back up, it had kept my XP points but 'gold' was 0.

Damn work network blocks nearly every site on the net related to gaming so I cant even google it atm :(

only lvl 8 atm play solder a lot but like the pathfinder and go after flags not much for sniper oh an think its brute as well i play same type of weapon as pathfinder but slower movement got the guy with mortor weapon but not much for him

Hey guys.

I played in the beta and a bit after release but understand this is now on Steam. Can I re-download from Steam and log in with my old account details?

It works the same as Teamspeak/Vent. Once you are on Spinfusor, find us in the flamboyant channel and we can walk you through the config. There are a few overlay options which make it much better in games.

Have a think about what type of player you want to be and we can advise on the loadouts. The only thing I will say about slow grabs is please consider the pathfinder that has spent the last 40secs to hit 300+. Admitently I did exactly the same thing when I started and still do by pro capping standards as you're not really capping until you are grabbing at 300+ lols.

If you are aware of paths doing routes, let them grab because on the higher level servers llama grabs will only work by luck; any capable defense will chain you down. What can be useful however is e-grabs where by you stop the other team from capping by taking their flag.

Swiss credits etc are built up in game and don't count / contribute to gold. They can however be used to buy vehicles. Gold can only be purchased (or given by HiRez).

OK nice one. Yeah I have a headset with a mic as I often get on TS2 with some of my quake buddies when we play on my server.

Not really sure what kind of player I want to be. I seemed to settle into basic skiing/jetting quite easily so could probably become a fairly competent pathfinder/capper. At this stage I move better than I shoot, but I think thats just down to weapon/physics learning curve and load out. I have always been an all round player on Q3 but in the last few years I tend to be a midfield damage player rather than a speedy capper. Loadout wise I think it would aid smoother initial progression if I can try and emulate what I am used to on Q3. That being something similar to a rail gun, a rocket launcher and a lightning gun. Those are my 3 main weapons of choice with a bit of shotgun for close quarters finishing on weak opponents. Someone has mentioned that the closest thing to rail is the equivalent of a sniper rifle. That might be something I should pursue but not sure if you can mix and match loadout with player class? Can a soldier use a sniper rifle? Or is it locked to the 'sniper' type classes? Also I have read somewhere that you have to use it scoped in order to shoot? That sucks if it is true :) Last night I did far more flag grabbing than I did killing as I found the whole aiming and jetting a little too weird, but again after only 3hrs play I havent really found my feet yet.

Yeah I never really thought about that. On a couple of the maps there were paths that were obviously going for the flag so I ran as backup/disruption to allow them to escape but on most it was a mish mash. A lot of the other players did seem to mill about at base though, so it often felt like there were only a couple of players on active offense, me being one of them. I also tried to make a run for the flag when I knew they had our flag, but I also tried to hunt their carrier as best I could. In one game I actually killed their carrier right on their flag, returned ours, llama grabbed theirs and went back and capped it :D Yah, I think I was lucky too. So so lucky :p

Oh I see, I get it now. What is the rate of gold to pounds stirling? Is it worth me dropping a £20 in and unlocking some half decent stuff? Or is that frowned upon in the community? Like 'all the gear no idea' kind of thing? I tend to run out of steam easily when jetting etc so I'm guessing some kind of charge speed/capacity upgrade will be worth it. Also ammo upgrades as I teneded to keep running out of assault rifle ammo. I also like the look of disc jumping etc.

Most of us here have unlocked things with gold. Some call it pay to win but 99% of the time I use pathfinder anyway and can win in a pub without any fancy weapons either. The guys shouting pay to win are nubs who are getting owned by higher skilled players.

Your probably in llama island servers still so maybe tonight if you get on mumble we can help you find the role for you. IMO your better off been really good at a single role than average in lots.

Classes have there set weapons available. The only things that can be used by any class is perks. Once unlocked in one class there available in all. Though a lot of perks are only worth using for a certain role.

ve offered a lot of you new ocuk players help in mumble but non have seemed to have joined yet. I dunno if this is because it seems weird or you don't think you need the help. Kiwi can speak from experience though that you will progress a lot quicker with more experienced players guiding you. He plays at a lot higher skill level than 95% of the players at his rank.

As above, if you are loving this game, then it's so much better if someone good can explain it to you. If not I think I'd still be running statics on dry dock lol.
My experience sounds very similar to yours Buffet. I have spent almost 80% of my time as path however I don’t have the consistency for competition.

To be honest I have had allot more fun as soldier on roaming defence or as offense. Don't get me wrong, being a good pathfinder makes you a better defender however in competitive games you need to be robotic as a pathfinder; consistently hitting routes, calling out exact times. This takes ALLOT of skill and practice.
So In summary if I was to spend my money again, I would focus on unlocking the soldier and pathfinder. If you have a talent for sniping then keep with it, as teams are always looking for a good sniper.

I will take all the help I can get! I have been used to being quite a useful player on Q3 for some time and have put in a lot of time over the years, especially at the start when I was learning the ropes. So going back to the start on a new game and being a complete noob is not a nice feeling! :p

Also, all friends were once strangers :)

Finally, I dont see any anti-cheat program for Tribes? How do they stop people abusing it? Hacking is rife in Quake 3, as well as QuakeLive, and I admit from some of the youtube vids of Tribes players some of the aiming/hitscan stuff people pull is a little 'lol'. One of the main reasons I havent bothered with QL is hackers and I hear BF3 is bad also. That said in last nights server there didnt appear to be anyone who was obviously killing everything in sight. Most players seemed just as bad as me :p

I will download mumble tonight. I dont really feel like I wanna be part of Pugs yet as I havent got enough play time to be of any use. I dont want to let the team down because of my lack of ability.
