*** The Official Tribes: Ascend Thread! ***

It's a great system the way that you are automatically put into a server based on your rank. RE Buffet, I don't think Tribes will be quite up to your expectations as nothing beats quake speed wise (IMO) however if you do enjoy it please join us in mumble. I'm sure Jim / Samsung would be happy to show you the ropes so to speak. If you have as much experience as you claim then I would imagine that within a couple of months your fragging power will be insane.

OK cool. How customisable is it in terms of network settings, HUD, in game settings etc? Can you alter FOV?

I said I played Q3 for nearly 13 years. I never said anything about being good at it :p

I only play for fun these days, but back when they ran Jolt leagues I tended to be in div 1 teams for 3w CTFS and some OSP CTF too. I also spent the first few years cutting my teeth in DM FFA, the first 2 of which I spent on 56k with 280 ping if I was lucky! Let me tell ya, Q3 with 15 FPS and 280 ping takes time to master :p I pretty much got raped for the 1st year

Its a shame that a lot of gamers these days just get owned when they start and instead of sticking with it, either quit or go and visit a forum of disrepute and pay an individual for a 'helping hand'. Quite sad really.

Sadly since getting progressively better connections my rocket skills started to sag in favour for more ping related weps like rail and lg.

If anyone is interested in comparing the physics of the 2 games, but have never played Q3 then go and check some vids out on youtube. Search for defrag and CPMA. Defrag and CPMA physics are a little better than standard, but even in standard form you can do an awful lot :)

I like these vids in particular. Anyone with a bit of Q3 experience will appreciate the awesome skill this stuff takes to do (as well as awesome teamwork). If you dont know anything about Q3 it might be a bit boring for you but hopefully you will appreciate the speed and physics (PS the vids are in HD and I advise watching it fullscreen). What makes it more amazing is the base for these physics was released in the game from day 1, nearly 13 years ago.

Defrag Speed Runs:

Q3 Trick Jumping

One thing i noticed on the Tribes Ascend vids is a lot of time is spent airbourne in quite high and not very fast trajectories. Do they have anything like a rail gun in this game? In Q3 if you went around like that people would be shouting "pull" and railing the doodoo out of you :)

Anyways I will look in on Tribes this week and see what its about.

Cheers

Love that defrag video (also a big DnB fan so little biased)!! As I mentioned if you're looking for a direct replacement from a speed perspective then I don't think Tribes can compete however it's certainly skill based. The 300+ routes on maps do take allot of time to master and are useful for capping. The thing about Tribes however is that the classes are so diverse so the videos you are referring to are probably more focused on the pathfinder class which is only one component of the game.

Take a look at this summary from a competition which has just finished. Some of the flag pasing is pretty amazing.

Tribes is a totally different beast to Quake, Quake has high acceleration and a very fast paced and nervous gameplay style, it is about having reflexes more than anything.

Tribes on the other hand has lower acceleration, but much, much higher max speed, duelling is very slow-paced due to projectile based weapons and it taking so many hits to kill someone with an automatic weapon, in my opinion Tribes is more about thinking, aiming and focusing.

Teamwork makes a huge difference in a game like Tribes and communication is crucial.

Both games take a lot of skill, and it's well known Quake players make excellent Tribes players, in fact many of the top Tribes players previously played Quake before they did Tribes.

As for Railgun, the closest weapon you'll get to it is the Snipers phase rifle.

tried some capping routes, is it me or is it really hard?
videos look effortless, but i just cant seem to maintain or get the same speed they do :(

Its a lot harder than it looks. As you say top players make it look effortless but understand they have run each route 1000+ times probably. Also im not sure what loadout your using but it makes a difference.

If your looking to learn to cap we can meet up in a server and follow me round some easier routes. Which once you get them down you can build on them by either fine tuning for greater speed or running more advanced variants which are harder to spot by the enemy or again are faster. Dont be put off by speed to start as that comes with experience. Anything over 200kph is pretty good for a new player.

Flamboyant vs IDK (ESL Chaps) videos, really sorry about watermark and lack of sound. I've fixed that now so no issues for future recording.

So we lost most maps but you guys played awesome on Arx, their best map. Not bad for our first Tier 1 scrim!

lol was playing on Arx Novena PUB and doing b2f grabs then discing from their base across the map and landing on my flag. Got accused of 'fly hacks' - by a level 33 no less :p

still not arrived :S said dispatched several days ago and amazon usually deliver by now. Gona give it til end of week and then order another, with a refund on this one.

Just watched arx. Sneaky you seemed to do really well at stopping there cappers getting very far and melur capped the whole map?

Really sorry about the watermark and lack of sound. Jim and I managed to fix this now and to be honest I'm really happy with the quality and low overhead of dxtory.

I do however suck as a spectator. Does anyone know how to bookmark a player as it's not really clear from the Z help menu. I would also like to adjust the free lock speed as well as it's very slow by default.

No worries kiwi. How'd your fps handle recording?

I'm looking forward to that tourney. Few things I thought abit weird is how do they expect to chase without lar? Its hard enough with it.

Also have you guys seen the list of maps?

I think grabbing is going to be difficult but once out it should be quite easy to get home. I think we could do very well in it tbh.

In t1 the mod we played was like this 5v5 so we ran 2 cappers, 2 chasers and one camper sat on the enemy base ready to grab in case of a return. No disruption was ever needed as two cappers would normally get out with the flag.

Any news on any scrims tonight? I think it would be worth running a practice once a week on a private server.

I don't notice any drop while playing. Might have to try the maximum quality preset lol.

It's going to be very hard indeed. Think Rage and Lightweight will be a must for chasing cappers.

What do you find the most effective way of chasing? Thurst, double nitron, disk and then save the last nitron to knock the flag out?

Thanks for the vids. The game still does not make too much sense to me as a non-player but it looks fun. Looking at how the 'hill slide' dynamics work it reminds me very much of the crouch slide technique used in Quake 4 to gather speed. I also get what people are talking about by flag routes now although looking at the vids the players tend to go high and long with their 'jumps'. Do the physics allow you to control your trajectory? IE less spacebar = slightly slower but flatter trajectory meaning you can use land for cover and not be such an open mid air target? Do you sustain damage from falling? Can you do explosive related 'rocket jumps' like in Q3? If so do these cause damage to you?

Also I notice when players have the flag and are attempting to escape, often it looks like single hits are killing them? Is this because of levelled up weapons etc? Or is this a standard feature of the game? (IE fast flag grabbers have low armour/health)

Anyway, I have a spare evening tonight in which I intend to have a go at this. Wish me luck! :p
