***The Official Wolfdale 8200/8400/8500 Overclocking Thread ***

You know Scotty wasn't lying, He never said it was the stock cooler for the 8500, he said it was on stock cooling, which from what I can see it is ;).

On another note it's really stupid that everything over 4 months old automatically gets called 'old tech'. Its hardly socket 370 now is it!

Any chance a E8400 will work on my 965-DS3 board? Think it's rev1?

Gigabyte's site say's n/a for bios version. Is it just because it doesn't support the low voltage? I'll be upping that anyway! And the board and RAM I got atm are good for 500FSB so wouldn't want to go changing really...

low voltage and FSB. It doesn't even support the QX6850. It's possible it would work but I wouldn't risk it personally.

If the voltage and FSB are the only things not officially supported then in theory it should still work? The board will run at 500FSB and higher voltage isn't really a problem. Or will it simply not work? Anyone know?

Wouldn't mind trying one of these chips out but dont fancy changing boards!

In theory it would work. I killed a motherboard trying a chip that should have worked in theory. Contact the manufacturer and confirm before you try.

In everyday use, does anyone see the difference between a 3.2 and 4.2 CPU speed?

It depends what you use your PC for but if you are asking the question then probably not.

On an average P35 board with air cooling and safe vcore I think 4Ghz is a realistic oc with a retail E8400.

Topitoff's results are the most reasonable so far, as he isn’t benching an ES chip and his cooling is pretty decent air.

Uhuh. And my stock VW Beetle will beat pretty much anything on the road. Oh sorry, I didn't mention it's got a stock Porsche engine in it? or that I'm helping to promote VW products?

It's willful misrepresentation whatever the apologists say.

edit... before ascending to their current favoured status, Intel earned themselves a reputation for this kind of thing, but I would expect more from a member of the overclocking community.

Yawn. What a pitiful excuse for an argument or to poke at someone.

Weescott's a good guy and not out to mislead anyone. If you're that bothered about it then why not write a letter to Gordon Brown and get him to take action!!!!.

Now crawl back into the pit you spawned from :p. I can't believe it's getting dragged up again. Have you nothing better to do?.

EDIT: 114 posts and this is one of them. Bravo :o.

Yes, because comparing 2 very very mediocre stock coolers, is just like that comparison. he never asked for your opinion on it either, the fact is he is doing overclocking on a cooler which he had available which is an intel reference, STOCK cooler.

You can say what you want, but again, it is wilfull misrepresentation.

Instead of spending your time insulting me, why not suggest the obvious, that he corrects his sig such that it is not an untruth. Forums like these are a valuable source of information, if highly visible members, particularly those representing in some way manufacturers do this unchallenged it can only be to the detrement of thier own & the forums integrity.

This is a discussion forum, he doesn't have to ask for my opinion.

STOCK implies it is supplied as standard with the product. As it was not supplied with the product in question it is *not* stock.

You know after this I wouldn't blame scotty for not wanting to post his benching any more. All he is doing is sharing his findings with what he had available, it was a STOCK cooler. It's hardly like he used his phase unit now is it.

Accept what you can get and stop taking such things so seriously.
