***The Official Wolfdale 8200/8400/8500 Overclocking Thread ***

Corrected. Not used to this half multiplier lark. :o

Anyway. Binned that now and am now priming at 4.2ghz (9.5x442). Temps are still only 58 degrees on both cores too. Makes me wonder if coretemp works properly with these cpu's. It certainly seems odd to have such a high idle temp anyway. It looks like this could be my lot for the time being. I have been into windows at 4.4ghz and did a Super PI 1m run (10.1secs :D) but it is not prime stable. It won't let me input a voltage of more than 1.45v as it just refuses to boot. This is a major problem for me as the vdroop on this board is appalling. Set 1.45 in the bios = 1.4150 in windows. I tried the pencil mod for this board but it did'nt work for me. Might try it again later with the aid of a spotlight and magnifying glass.

If i can't get any more than 4.2ghz then i will probably go back to 4ghz and run all the voltages at stock. No point in stressing anything out for the sake of 200mhz.

One more plus to this cpu though. It uses 125w less power at 4.2ghz than my quad did at 3.8ghz.

I would rather have a 3.8ghz quad than a 4ghz wofldale any day of the week.

If your happy though thats what counts.

Thanks for the analysis. You have made my my mind up Q9450 for me 3.6-3.8ghz.

I get quad core again ,more speed, less power and SSE4 into the bargain for Adobe production studio.

I will miss wolfdales out.

What is your problem? It was my choice, my money and i really do not need your blessing. You just don't seem to be able to keep your mouth shut and let other people do what they want to do. You always have to have a dig. A 5 ghz quad would have been no use to me because as i told you before i have nothing that makes use of the four cores. I actually sold the quad for more than i paid for it anyway.

I have had this Wolfdale for a total of 7 hours 43 minutes, only 6 and a half hours of which it has been in my rig. Most of that time has been spent running prime @4ghz with all voltages and settings on stock. That is damn good. I am still finding my way around the P5E's bios and experimenting with settings, some of which i have no idea what they do. Add to that the terrible vdroop and it's early days yet. It took ages to get the most out of the quad. There were times that i was stuck on 3ghz then i tried something different and got it to 3.2ghz and so on. No doubt it will be the same with this one.

***Edit***New bios just released for the P5E, ver 601 and it's up on the Asus ftp. Someone is testing it over at XS so hopefully this may fix a few things.

I have system as sig and am thinking its time to sell the E6600 and go quad, but these wolfies seem interesting as I only play games and run itunes!

Looking at my sig, should I go 8400 or 8500?

Advice please guys :D

Wish they would release a new BIOS for my poor little P5N32-E SLI :(

Demon.

Same here for my board mate im on a beta at the moment and i hate it:mad:

I actually have to defend easy here, I don't think he was being condecending "this time".

That's the problem with forums, You have no context or emotion for what you read/type.

I read it that easy prefers quad over duals for what he uses his PC for compared to you/I who mostly game where a higher clocked dual core is more benificial that having a lower clocked quad core.

I wouldn't bother mate...

* We've seen evidence that for the majority of games (which are GPU limited) there is not much in the way of FPS improvement above 3.6 Ghz
* Quads will be more and more utilised over time in games

If you really have a case of upgraditis and you can afford it, then I would suggest the E8500. Your current mobo and RAM will probably restrict your overclock on a E8400 to 4Ghz max, whereas the extra .5 multi on the E8500 will get you c4.2Ghz which would make the upgrade feel more worth it.

Just my 2p worth.

ps - just spotted the water in your sig - maybe gives you another 200Mhz?

Ive settled for 3800 for 24/7 on my 8400 for now, i can run Prime small FFT's for hours and i have run memtest in windows stressing all 4 gigs of ram in my sig,

The PC will reboot and sleep fine but on a cold boot it resets the bios and i have to go and change everything back to my normal overclock

Why the hell does this happen it doesnt make sense

It's not all about percentages. Yes the percentage increase on the E8400 and E8500 is less than on older, slower processors but, when you start getting towards 4Ghz you're starting to hit the wall in terms of what's possible, especially with air cooling. Whilst an E8400 at 4Ghz or higher might only be a 33% overclock, the older 65nm processors will have serious trouble getting to these speeds on air without major volts and heat output.

No, it follows on from other threads where he has chastised my choice of ditching my quad (that i cannot get full use from) in favour of my E8500. He just does'nt know when to let it go.

I would get the 8400 and save £60, the high temps and a what seems a common lack of stabilty over 4.0 - 4.2Ghz with either chip means the cheaper option looks best imo.

Core temp is showing 78-80C on load @450x9 1.35v in bios with a Scythe Ninja. Seems a bit hot for me, is it safe to run this?
