***The Official Wolfdale 8200/8400/8500 Overclocking Thread ***

Oh no, don't touch Asus software. There is a speedfan beta out that knockks 5c off the temp...but I don't think thats right either.

Still running my E8400 @ 4.2GHz (467 x 9) on Gigabyte GA P35 DS3P BIOS F9, been doing quite a bit of video encoding with a TMPGEnc product, and find it quite an improvement over an E6600 @3.5GHz.

Temps during encoding which is 50% CPU (in CoreTemp) are in the mid 50s C....(apparently the temps shown by CoreTemp are higher than they should be, so I don't know if it is worth regarding them). :)

Lol, so basically what you are saying is that theres nothing reliable atm?

i think i agree with ya on this, my temps are all over the place using core temp(35), speedfan(21), probe(21), everest(26), and at bios it says 21,.....but when stressing at stock (using an TRUE wirth 120mm 1600rpm fan) none of them say theres any difference in cpu change :p... which is a bit weird if ya aask me... unless the TRUE is actually that good ;)

What is your problem? It was my choice, my money and i really do not need your blessing. You just don't seem to be able to keep your mouth shut and let other people do what they want to do. You always have to have a dig. A 5 ghz quad would have been no use to me because as i told you before i have nothing that makes use of the four cores. I actually sold the quad for more than i paid for it anyway.

I have had this Wolfdale for a total of 7 hours 43 minutes, only 6 and a half hours of which it has been in my rig. Most of that time has been spent running prime @4ghz with all voltages and settings on stock. That is damn good. I am still finding my way around the P5E's bios and experimenting with settings, some of which i have no idea what they do. Add to that the terrible vdroop and it's early days yet. It took ages to get the most out of the quad. There were times that i was stuck on 3ghz then i tried something different and got it to 3.2ghz and so on. No doubt it will be the same with this one.

***Edit***New bios just released for the P5E, ver 601 and it's up on the Asus ftp. Someone is testing it over at XS so hopefully this may fix a few things.

Hang on a second. You have completely misread my post.

Taken it the wrong way yet again.I'm sick of your aggression on these forums.

I thank your for your analysis and get insulted in the process.

I actually have to defend easy here, I don't think he was being condecending "this time".

That's the problem with forums, You have no context or emotion for what you read/type.

I read it that easy prefers quad over duals for what he uses his PC for compared to you/I who mostly game where a higher clocked dual core is more benificial that having a lower clocked quad core.

Thank you common sense at last.:)

the thing i dont get easy is why u made a thread about overclocking a cpu that you dont have and have no intention of buying

not like you can compare your findings is it

anyway

4.7 now slowly going up

Core temp doesn't read the temperature of Wolfdale CPU's properly. It over reads by a fair bit. Its fine.
The problem isn't with Core Temp weescott as it's taking the reading directly from the diode in the CPU. It's looking like the diode's are either calibrated by Intel incorrectly, or they're just plain duff.

You're right about SpeedFan. It's basing its reading on the max Tjunction temps for the Wolfdale's to be 100c, and not the correct value of 105; that's why it's showing temps 5c lower.

Cheers Keith & Devious

I must admit its more a case of upgraditis! But also looking at what I can sell my CPU on the bay (can I say that?!) for, it would not be to expecsive to go to an 8400

I play BF2142 and TF2 most

My water should keep these toasty chips cool enough. A stable 4ghz would be lovely, and a nice brag to my oc virgin mates!

Now priming at 4.4ghz. Temps are 52 on both cores. Lower than yesterday because the outside temps have dropped a lot. I need some scary voltages through the motherboard though. I hate this 502 bios but i have to use it as it's the only one that supports these cpu's. Clocking is a lot harder than with the 401 i had before. Might have to give the 601 a go, although there is no feedback on it yet.

Is anybody else using a P5E X38 with one of the Wolfdales? If there is, please can you post your settings? I have re-done the vdroop pencil mod and it has improved things a lot. What is the max anyone would put through one of these under water? 1.45v vcore? Maybe 1.475v?

humm not good?

ok regardless of the temp settings i went ahead and tried to do some stressing at 3.6 GHz last night to see if it was stable.. heres what i got..

speedfan only went up to 35oC but core temp did raise to 42 ish, i think i put the voltage to auto on the mobo and thats what it came up with.
but the other thing is the mobo temp didnt change atall?! 25 constant? that cant be right, cos i put my hand on the northbridge HS and it was warmer than it was before... hummm but still why the failing :(

also tried again now just on stock everything and it failed after 12 mins?! wwhats going on :(

Ah ha!! Another P5E clocker. Are you on the 502 bios? I think it's a board problem as i am having a hard time getting stability as well.

yep i am indeed on the 502.... it seems to run games and everythign fine at the oc speed... but still :p put it back to stock Hz and auto volts, hope this issus is resolved soon.... are you getting messed up temps too?

Where are you getting the temps from? Asus Probe? I don't think it's right as it constantly says the MB is at 25 degrees. Never goes up or down. I might try the latest version that was released 10-1-08. I don't think core temp reads the Wolfies correctly either. My most stable (and easiest) clock so far was when i left everything at auto and just raised the fsb to 422. That was an easy and very stable 4Ghz. Playing with the other settings just led to unstability. There is a new bios, 601, that was released yesterday but i don't really want to give it a go without any feedback. Some of the guys at XS are playing with it.

oooo u got stable at 4GHz easy? could ya send me the bios settings ya used for that please? i noticed theres quite a vdrop on these boards too, tried to set it to 1.192 and it dropped to like 1.12 :p no good.
but if you could tell me your settings pretty pleaseee :D i have the same ram as you also ;) and using my antec 900 and TRUE HSF with s-flex 1600 for cooling hehe :)

This was my first clock on it. I took out my old cpu and put in my new one, reset the cmos and then went in the bios and set my ram voltage and timing and the other usual stuff. I went into extreme tweaker set it to manual and changed the multiplier to 9.5 and the fsb to 422 and that was it. Everything else was set to auto. I did'nt expect it to boot but it did and then went on to run prime for 4 hours or so. I got fed up then and tried for more and despite changing everything in the bios i cannot get anything else stable. 4.5ghz has just failed after 3 and a half hours. I have even had the NB voltage up to 1.75v (maximum setting and it's watercooled). I am going to try the new bios as i am fed up with this one.

There's a pencil mod for vdroop. I had to do it twice before it worked. You can see it over at the XS forums where there is a huge thread for our board here. Vdroop mod is at post #870.
