***The Official Wolfdale 8200/8400/8500 Overclocking Thread ***

I'm getting a difference of 16 degrees between the cores now. Coretemp is definately wrong because the BIOS agrees with SpeedFan and the Radeon GPU is also at a similar temperature and its on the same water loop.
Whats going wrong here?

Trying a different approach now. I am using OCCT to test for stability before running prime. Just got 4.5Ghz OCCT stable at 9x500 yet 4.5Ghz at 9.5x474 would'nt stay stable. It is now priming small fft's and hopefully this time it will be stable for 8+ hours. If it is'nt then my best clock is 4.2Ghz, which, quite frankly, is pathetic. If this is'nt stable then it's getting sold. It will be my shortest ever cpu. I have seen 8400's doing far better than this.

How much VC are you using?

A scary 1.575v. Temps are good though at 58 degrees. That's if you believe coretemp. Anything below that will not get stable. These things need ridiculous voltage for even moderate clocks. One guy at XS has pumped a huge 1.7v through his.

It’s so random! I’ve had zero issues with coretemp when using it with conroe, allendale, merom, yonah, conroe-l and kentfield cpu's but for some reason many people have reported it incorrectly reading the temps of these new wolfdale chips, seems pretty common.
If you feel speedfans results are more satisfactory stick with that, maybe coretemp is working on this issue.

Failed after just over an hour. Had enough of this piece of carp now and it's getting sold. Going to be without a main gaming rig for a while though as there is no real alternative at the moment. Might try a 8400 in a couple of weeks and hope there are some good ones around by then.

If only you could be happy with 4.2Ghz :(

Is it really worth selling?? Im mean you could wait a few weeks, miss out on loads of gaming time, finally grab an e8400 only to find out it craps out at the same speed!
Don't play the waiting game buddy!

i think i know how pastymuncher feels, Hesky82. After all the results from ES's, i thought it not unrealistic to expect a Prime stable clock of 5ghz under my phase unit. I was'nt the only person to think that either. As it stands at the moment my E8500 is Prime stable at 4.6ghz. Once my OCZ 9600 Flex arrives, if i can't get any more out of it, i'll be looking for another E8500 in a month or so.

Had a bit more luck in stablilty for 3dmark06 tried FSB at 575 to give 1:1 with the 9200flex and think I have more FBS to come out of the mobo not bad for an old 965 chipset, but Prime small fft still not stable after an hour but no problems identified while playing online which is the main thing for me. Temps with coretemp and Asus probe are consistant with each other. VC dropped from 1.49 to 1.46 under load but temps upto mid 60's under load. Will try 4.5g OC later. Pics show some benchies but PI is slightly under score with all that open on the desktop though.

It's not just the clocks, it's also the high volts needed for them. These things are supposed to run cooler (yeah right, 36 degrees idle at stock) and need lower voltage. I don't call 1.475v (just for 4Ghz) low volts. I can sell it now while they are in short supply and not lose anything. I did'nt pay a silly price for mine and one went on the bay the other night for £14 more than i paid for mine.

Atleast you dont lose a dime selling it now, I see your point.

Why not grab an "Almost for Free" Celeron E1200 dual core, clock the hell out of it and use that for a while until you find the cpu you really want. That why you dont have a beast of a system just sitting there doing nothing!

Pastymuncher.

I agree about the high vcore and high temps.
Mine needs a hefty vcore to go over 4.2 stable.
Doesn't get prime stable at 4.3ghz + with any amount of vcore.

Can bench and game up to 4.5ghz but not being prime stable is a worry.

Right now though it's the best chip available for my gaming PC so it is useful
but disappointing.
