***The Official Wolfdale 8200/8400/8500 Overclocking Thread ***

BTDT buddy, its not the cpu. Tis your board telling you something. Seriously play about with your FSB termination voltage and CPU Voltage Reference, find the sweet spot and you will get rid of those restarts. Very common with P5K boards and probably others.

All tried & makes no difference whatsoever, in fact moving the VTT & the GTL's off auto simply results in lower clocks in general the same effect it had on my Q6600...

What I cannot understand for the life of me is the fact that it will run prime 95 for about an hour, while doing other things at the same time @ 4.2ghz, but cant run 3dmark 2006 at the same speed...

Possibly the main problem is my mobo as I have the P5K-Premium & the bios support sucks!

I use a P5K Premium, have tried early to late bios's to no ill effect, but I don’t have a wolfdale.
I’m actually running the latest bios suitable for these new 45nm chips and it’s still kicking ass with my quad.

Believing its nothing other than the cpu or mb, I find it odd your system is fully prime stable but yet can’t complete 3dmark2006:confused: at what point in the bench does it crash? And by dropping just the cpu clock you can get it to complete the 3d bench?

Devious has an E8500 on the way, will be interested to see how well he and his asus premium get on with it.

One of the reasons I like MSI, good bios support and a good forum.

My mobo was completely stable with my Q6600, no issues whatsoever, with everything else exactly the same... It's either the chip or the bios is bugged to hell...

to answer your other question, no I havent managed to get 3dmark 06 to run at all with this CPU... But having said that I have read on other forums people having random restarts in games with the E8500's when the system is tested as stable... So im wondering is there are some issues with some of these chips

Yeh, they have really got their act together! making a big point about it and producing some stonking stable yet cheap motherboards.

But you wouldn’t have been able to say that a few years ago, some of there top socket A and early 939 boards were very flaky. MSI's live update system was a laugh!

The worst experience I had with an msi product was a good few years back, me and my buddy built a socket A system based around an msi board, the bios over volted and killed his XP-mobile cpu and an 9700pro gfx!

I overclocked my e8400 to 3.6ghz which was stable, but my pci soundcard (x-fi extreme audio) made some pretty scary short, loud static noises through my headphones. I thought it might be something to do with locking the pci frequency or something but I can't see anything in the bios about pci frequency, only pci-e (on a vanilla Asus P5K)!

TOO LATE MY COMPUTER HAS ALREADY EXPLODED :p.

I'll give it a try later, it's pretty annoying having it "stable" yet making some freaky noises at me like it's not happy!

Well, ive now sold my E8500...

But I managed to do this just before I sold it ;)

yea, under water...

Sold it cos it's an unstable CPU for clocking & it runs far too hot. Low VID but silly temps tbh...

Was from a very early batch :(

I agree with everything you said. 36 degrees at idle on water cooling while at stock speeds is ridiculous. My quad idled at 26 degrees when at 3.6ghz!! I am just priming at 4.4Ghz but i am on the verge of giving up and flogging mine as well. Might even make a profit as i paid well under the price most places are selling them for. Should have got a 8200 and a G33 board. Seen some fantastic clocks from that configuration.

***Edit*** Just fallen over yet again. Cannot get it stable at 4.4ghz now. On Friday it was fine. Falls over within an hour of starting prime now. It's frustrating and just plain hopeless. :(
