***The Official Wolfdale 8200/8400/8500 Overclocking Thread ***

What's been the minimum voltage you people have been able to get away with on a e8400 at 4GHz? Mines 8hrs+ Orthos stable with 1.3875v, but I'm sure that's not enough and causing me some stability problems :(

What v's do you recommend?

Cheers,

SW.

Okay, I might give that a try later?

Could my 5300 Ballistix be holding me back :(

At 9x445 they're under 900MHz?

SW.

Not if there at CL5, even then at 2.2v my 5300 ballistix would manage 1000MHz CL4 2T.
Anyway its easy to find out, just run memtest.

Interesting. What other mem settings did you use?

Mine are on auto atm, and I get 5,3,3,15. The CR is 2T :)

SW.

Edit: What would you suggest I try?

Your motherboard has incorrectly set your ram latencies, If you manually set the ram to 4-4-4-12 2T at 2.2v that should see you to 900MHz with pretty much any Ballistix sticks. 1:1 with the cpu at 4050MHz

i know there are temp issues with this chip but in Everest, right now it says 21deg for the cpu and 38 for each core, which always stays the same for each core

the m/b temp is reported as 27 so surely theres no way the cpu can be 21 ? using a TRUE120

would like to know the real temperarure so I can keep an eye on it better for overclocking

Really wanted to have a play around with a wolfie, so I got my hands on a cheap E8400.

Scared by all this talk of +1.45v screwing up these new chips I made just over 1.4 my absolute max.

4.5GHz was as high as I could go with that voltage and still be PI 32M stable. Prime was not stable but the cpu still scales beautifully with voltage and my ram has loads of headroom left, so here's hoping :)

Oh yeah, I’m pretty sure I have incorrect idle temps. no matter what vcore/clock I run coretemp will always idle at 44C on both cores readings.

My idle temps are similar, have you tried touching the heatsink? Mine was barely above ambient.

Coretemp 46/46'C
Speedfan 4.33 106'C ()
PC Probe II 25'C

Go figure...

I've just in stalled one of tese 8400 cpus, and went straight to 3.8ghz with only a little boost on the Vcore, summat like 1.24 ish (can't remember exactly, but well low). Is orthos, prime stable for hours, and gained 2000 points in "06".
Now this is all fine and good, but when I checked idle/load temps I was somewhat surprised to see one core at 30c and the other at 47c, thats a 17c degree difference between the cores. At load the difference is still there by the same amount, just the numbers are bigger. I've confirmed these readings with a number of apps and they all say the same, well one even gave me a 20c difference! Other than an ill fitting heatsink (which has already been lapped), faulty cpu, does anyone have any ideas? :)

Buddy, I’m under quality water which could tame a Q6600 at 4GHz! the temps in coretemp with this E8400 are so out its just annoying!!

I have an infrared temp monitor and held it on the cpu water block and its reading 26-27C under prime load and I have a temperature sensor stuck to the exhaust side of my radiator and its reading no more than 25C~!

See my Q6600 would exhaust temps out of the rad at about 35-40C under load (10C~ higher than this E8400, bear in mind I never let the reading go over 50-55C in coretemp with my Q6600. Now with my E8500 I’m seeing 75-80 in coretemp on both core in Prime SFF!!

So with the facts.....

My Q6600's prime radiator exhaust temps were 40C~ and core temp read 50C~ = a difference of 10C (imo that’s looking right)

My E8400’s prime radiator exhaust temps are 25~ and coretemp is reading 80C~ = a difference of 55C!!! COME ON GIVE ME A BREAK!

I call coretemps E8400's reading BS for sure!!

I said to myself these incorrect software reading wouldnt annoy me, but unfortunately they are!

Well I just tried an infrared thermometer on mine (quiet air), and it's about 27-28 idle, coretemp reporting 45.

I've got a FLIR S60 downstairs...maybe I should investigate further....;)

I think that’s a bit OTT but why not  very trick piece of kit! Any chance you take some shots and post them here? :) pretty interesting stuff!

People, how does 1.45V sound for 4.2GHz small FFT stable??

I was super PI 32m stable with the same voltage but at 4.5GHz. I just had to keep dropping and dropping the clock till I was small FFT stable. Pretty gutted tbh as I’ve never had a cpu that has required a 300MHz drop in clock to get small FFT stable :(

Small FFT just constantly gave errors above 4.2, where as blend just sailed buy at a much higher clock

I dropped the multi to test ram and got zero errrors so Im sure its just the cpu crapping out :(

Try and relate the colourbar to the image for temperature values (values above and below the colourbar). I left a spot reading (centre of the frame) in for reference (read top right).

[The graphics card may just be reflecting the RAM's IR...the silentmaxx enclosures (bottom right) seem to do a good job :)]

I'll leave it at that to avoid a derail...whilst the temperatures aren't 100% accurate, that looks pretty conclusively like a cool CPU and smokin' RAM

Yeah, I think I'll try dropping the RAM voltage a bit, and if that doesn't work I'll resort to active cooling :|
