***The Official Wolfdale 8200/8400/8500 Overclocking Thread ***

Geting crazy readings here. Bough two E8200s today. Booted up at 500fsb with a 7 multiplier for 3.5gig. I put 1.45 in the bios but cpu-z is reading 1.37v! Gonna try for 4gig @ 400fsb.

Coretemp also gives different temp readings compared to HW monitor. I'd rather rely on the coretemp one as its cooler :D

Edit now @ 4gig on air 11.5sec superpi!

more....more....

Update. I had to set the the voltage to 1.5v in the bios to get a approx 1.4v actual. Underload the cpu was going down from 1.43 to 1.40. I've tweaked it a bit more with 1.485v in the bios giving an even 1.4v actual, had a quick game of crysis and everything was perfect. However the Zalman Fatality Cooler I've got is shocking, and makes a terrible racket. Therefore I'm currently measuring up my case for some watercooling to see what I can get :D

E8500 is:
SLAPK MALAY
q747a363
Pack date 01/28/08

Will push the e8500 further when I get a decent cooler, at the moment just using the stock retail.

Crysis gpu benchmark @ 1280x1024@high I get 44.9 fps

Ive now replaced the awful stock h/s+fan and am now stable at 4ghz, 4.1 runs 3d mark ok but isnt orthos stable. vcore is at 1.35.

I moved to the arctic freezer pro 7 cooler.

As per my thread in the Motherboards section. I have a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 Rev 1.0 running on air, Zalman 9500;
E8400 @ 4.0Ghz (1.2650v) - See sig for CPUZ
E8400 @ 3.6Ghz (1.2250v)
Will be trying higher volts and Ghz soon, but quite happy so far.

Thats pretty good for a motherboard with a beta bios and no official support. Nice going. You also have one of the low voltage loving 8400's. What batch is it?

i think the 8400 is the way to go , it costs slightly more and chances to hit 4 gig and more on low volts are higher

Agree'd. Over at XS there are some cracking results with E8400's on low volts. Much better than the E8500. I will be getting a E8400 when the next batch is released.

There are also some excellent results with E8200's and G33 chipset boards.

oikies regarding this superpi thing ive been on about, just booted up in safe mode and it ran all the tests fine and didnt fail or crash once... so im sure its something in windows making it stop responding *shakes fist at microsoft*

Bad news for the GA-965P-DS3... Appears to have cold boot issues. Either will have to buy another mobo or sell what looks like a great E8400 :(

Hey guys,

Got my E8400 this morning and I’m now happily running at 4GHz (445*9) with 1.375v ;)

I’m going to Othros it tonight but it passed OCCT and 3DMark06 okay.

What other settings should I be playing with in the bios? Do the Wolfdale’s need extra PCI-e/FSB/MCM volts or anything? My Ballistix (5300) seem to be doing okay with just an extra .2v going through them.

Cheers,

SW.

what speed and ratio is ya ram at? and you got it running at 2.4v then?

yeah, you shouldn’t need to over volt your Ballistix at all, I’m running my pc5300 Ballistix at 900MHz CL4 with just 2v, 0.2 lower than stock ratings. I’d make sure your actively cooling your sticks if they really must run at 2.4v.

My ram is on a 1:1 divider with 2v going through them - it’s only on that because that’s the setting left over from my E2160. I suppose I could try to put that back down to 1.8v and try that?

I had up the cpu's volts to 1.385v because 1.375v failed after about 20mins... I then ran Orthos for 7hrs over night and it was fine.

The highest the temp got was a bout 66 degrees. Idle, the cpu's temp is between 26-33 depending on the room's temp :)
