** The Official WWDC 2011 Thread **

I'm looking to buy an Apple laptop for uni in a few months and the Air appeals to me- how long might it be between announcement of the Air refresh and it going live on the Apple store?

Wait until they announce Back To School and score a free iPod Touch / X off an iPad. This is usually about now. Also ensure you get academic pricing (15% off..!).

To be honest... the whole conference stinks of software updates... I wouldn't be surprised if we saw no hardware updates in this conference.

Or perhaps, it will be the "One more thing..." that Jobs is so famous for :p

I dont think we need a new phone right now, if iOS5 is a good update it will transform the phone no end. Not to mention, my current contract still has 6 months to run, so I can wait :>

The iPhone 4 was leaked to high heaven last time, what with prototypes being left at bars and stuff. If there is one to be shown, you can be sure this year that they've done everything they can to keep it completely under wraps till it's ready to be unveiled.

Considering the iPhone 4 is already starting to lag a bit, iOS5 may pretty much take away all the smoothness it has left.

The iPad2 will be fine.

I agree with this. They'd be mad not to bring out some new iPhone related hardware at all this year (the iPhone white doesn't really count).

They could announce it later on in the year at their next media event - I would imagine there will be release this year - but I think it'll be later this year now.

i think they will announce it but shippimg will start in july its my personal opinion

cause apple already has a5 and his soc also has retina now they will have ios 5 optimized for 2 core.. so i think we will see our future toy soon

Very unlikely a chance of a hardware release. They've been lowering expectations of a hardware release by telling us what they will be presenting. This years WWDC is going to be about software software software. Personally I can't wait.

When did Apple ever reveal what they are doing though?
So there is no logic to saying that.

There is no reason why they might not announce a new phone, doesn't mean it has to be on sale that day.

As I've said before, this market is hugely competitive and Apple can't be seen to be dragging it's feet against fierce competition. Plus there are still many like myself who didn't upgrade from the 3G because they were put off by the antenna issues.

It may only be a speed bump, but I'm sure there will be something new.

Apple never normally pre-announces what they're going to be presenting, even in the press releases. This is taken straight from the press release.

CUPERTINO, California—May 31, 2011—Apple® CEO Steve Jobs and a team of Apple executives will kick off the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) with a keynote address on Monday, June 6 at 10:00 a.m. At the keynote, Apple will unveil its next generation software - Lion, the eighth major release of Mac OS® X; iOS 5, the next version of Apple’s advanced mobile operating system which powers the iPad®, iPhone® and iPod touch®; and iCloud®, Apple’s upcoming cloud services offering.

They're setting expectations. I would be very surprised if there was any new hardware at WWDC. September, maybe.

Exactly - I think they are dousing any massive expectations when it comes to hardware...

Hardware isn't the main focus of the WWDC though, and I'm pretty excited by their bullish pre-anouncment, it seems like they're saying 'ok enough of this crap, we're doing it in a big way'

Google loves to announce new things without the support or contracts, apple likes to get everyone on board before releasing a product, so it seems they're really going for it next week.

This is what I'm thinking - I think the last few WWDCs have been disappointing. With this announcement they are letting us know - Forget about the hardware.

However, I could be totally wrong and they could have posted the announcement on purpose to build suspense and have the "One more thing..." have a little more shock :p

Anyone here think they will release a touch screen macbook air next week to complement Lion?? I remember when they announced Lion and briefly talked about the touch screen features they had a picture of what looked like a macbook air to go with it.

Just noticed also on Apples website. Details about Lion are accompanyed with shots of Macbook Air.

18 month and 24 month contract on the iPhone have become a norm...

A 12 month product cycle is not viable anymore!

Looking forward to Lion... Not sure I'm fussed about iOS5

Edit... Thinking about it, the introduction of iOS5 will only be for iPhone4 making the 3GS redundant (its only the 3G that is redundant now, no?). I think they will be hoping to boost iPhone 4 sales by this as people upgrade to get the new OS
