The ongoing Elon Twitter saga: "insert demographic" melts down

It is nice when people can do things charitably to support a war effort but things like this ultimately should be government funded war procurement - as a gross generalisation the costs of war quickly outpaces the ability of even rich individuals/businesses to keep up with.

So one day Musk is bragging about how generous he is while 'paedo guying' someone that had actually stood up to russia more than Musk. Then the next week he wants to end that same thing he bragged about?

Well I never.

what I don’t get is why this is taking place / negotiations over twitter.

And no Elon / space x shouldn’t be having to foot the bill, that’s quite obvious.
Why not? They've received billions in subsidy from the US government and the cost of supplying internet to Ukraine is minuscule in comparison.

It's not quite like that though. It has been 6 months after all.

I think the issue Elon has is the optics of the timing. He is looking more and more each day as a guy who only does things to help himself, and when that isn't possible, he forgets to be charitable and doesn't want to help any more.

It also furthers the narrative that Elon actually has recently spoke to Putin and agreed to stop helping

He would have been wise to wait 1 more month for some of it to blow over.

Richest man in the Worlds company "can't" [won't] fund Starlink anymore because it's cost them nearly $100 million

That's 0.046% of his supposed net worth.

And that is despite:

What a great man...I'm sure it's not him being completely petty when they told him to **** off.

Vincent, someone being "worth" X amount doesn't mean they have billions in liquid assets sat around to give away.

How much did you personally give? Just a ball park figure please

SpaceX wins contracts from the Government to do certain things, it's not just a free cheque. Providing continued internet to Ukraine isn't one of these things.

I'm no mathematician but I'm sure someone here could work out how much the average person would need to give to a Ukrainian charity to compare to what Musk has given if his $250b is 1-1 to their net worth.

It is a bit ridiculous, he stepped up and provided a big donation the equipment turned out to be super useful but there are ongoing costs, obviously (douchebag behaviour on Twitter aside) he probably doesn't want to cut Ukraine off.

I'm not sure many defence companies are donating say 100million worth of equipment, I presume they're mostly getting paid by countries like the US or indeed fulfiling direct orders from Ukraine.

Arguably the Pentagon should be funding this.

Tbf he was sort of repairing his image somewhat with it up until he shattered it and also was decent PR for his products so it's hardly like there weren't upsides for him.

Honestly I think he jumped in without realising the risk he'd be taking putting himself squarely in the Kremlin's crosshairs and now after some time (+threats) he's in a hole he can't get out of.

He has got some incredible advertising out of this. Everyone has heard of Starlink now, before it was just us nerds. Still credit where it is due. I hope he'd keep his mouth shut on geo politics now but there is zero chance of that.

Oh I wouldn't be surprised if someone has had a word in his ear saying Putin isn't happy and he's not a man to upset. I can't see even Putin having the balls to go after someone like Musk on a physical level but I'm sure the Russian state could make life hard for his businesses if they put their mind to it.
