Yep that was one of the first things for me. After watching interviews with cave divers and Thirteen Lives its clear as day his idea would never have worked but he had to make himself the centre of attention. Yes Vernon Unsworth seems to not suffer fools and maybe could have been more diplomatic but Elon showed what a massive douche he is
Then covid came and we had some bangers.
Early March 2020 “the coronavirus panic is dumb.”
Late March 2020, “zero new cases” by the end of April. Same day we also had this, Musk insisted “kids are essentially immune” to the coronavirus.
He knows no more about covid or the vaccine than your average Joe.
He broke the law and reopened the Tesla assembly factory with zero care for the risk he might have been exposing his workforce to.
Then he said he'd have Telsa making "incubators" but all he did was buy cheap Chinese ones that were of zero use and put a Tesla sticker on them and sold them on for profit.
I could on and on with covid stuff. In fact I could go on and on all day. The man is a narcissist, likely a psychopath but he posts funny memes sometimes and is a great car salesman so people think he's the Tech Jesus. Jesus, if he existed would be horrified by Elon Musk.

That cave rescue/sub thing was one of the ones that broke the Musk bubble for me, as you say Vernon seems to not suffer fools lightly, but IIRC he'd spent a lot of time/effort persuading the local officials to accept outside help from the divers, and apparently Musk's interference was threatening to delay the attempts at the rescue at a time when the kids were only getting weaker, the divers were getting more and more exhausted/prone to mistakes, and the risk of rising water was increasing.
I can imagine even the most patient person getting a bit short when they're exhausted and putting their life/the lives of dozens of others at risk every single day, knowing that they've got a limited time to get anything done, and then someone without any idea of the conditions starts making suggestions that threaten to increase and extend the risks you're taking for no realistic chance of doing any good in the timeframe you've got before luck runs out.
I mean I had no experience with cave diving, but I was aware how exceptionally risky it is*, and the sort of conditions that are common, not to mention it was noted early on that the conditions were "tight", and as it turned out by "tight" they meant "you had to take your tanks off and bend" to get through some parts, which means that the divers knew that there was no way a "micro sub" type thing could work with the route they had.
*I'd seen enough comments/videos/documentaries from divers about the risks (including very experienced ones stating they'd never do cave work), and read reports about how easily things go wrong and how common it is for people to die during rescue/recovery of previous victims.

It wasn't just an insult though. He had a massive platform and calling someone a 'pedo guy' is a lot worse & more serious than the guy accusing him of doing a pr stunt and telling him to stick the submarine up his bum. That was only the start though, because Elon then hired a bogus private investigator to prove that the diver was a pedo and described him as a 'child rapist' to media.
That's a lot more than tit for tat, and even if it had just been an equivalent insult it still wouldn't reflect well on him.

The other totally dumb thing about that whole thing for me was - having never cave dived ever, I imagined the likelihood of getting a mini sub where it needed to be was such an outrageously stupid idea.
We all saw the TV interview where he insulted Elon, it's fair to say the cave diver also had a fairly large platform... given it was reported and we all saw it. You're right though, pedo wasn't a great choice of words, but insulting someone who is trying to help after they were asked and accusing them of it being PR stunt is a pretty low blow. Kind of like if you brought a cake to a party after you were asked by the organiser, then someone calls you a **** and accuses you of trying to steal the limelight and that they already had plenty of cakes, but you were just doing a good deed after being asked, how the hell do you know your cake wasn't needed, and you're now being insulted, you don't feel a little upset? Being a billionaire doesn't mean you aren't also a human. I understand both sides and I watched the documentary, a submarine would be a ******* stupid idea, except you wouldn't know that until you were there.
Ah come off it lol. Maybe I am just super smart but absolutely no way was that ever a plausible idea.

He was still upset when he doubled down on the paedo claim and paid a private investigator to get dirt on the diver.
Everyone pays a private investigator 50 grand to try and win at trash talking on global media.
