The ongoing Elon Twitter saga: "insert demographic" melts down

Apparently he's tried to do the same before with PayPal, renaming it to the exact same x.com.

The sad thing is, I agree with his thoughts on how PayPal have evolved. It's a crime that PayPal is a shadow of a company of what it could have been.

It's too generic.
X is used for so many things.

"I just banged one out on my X"

Could get confusing!

At least have X-something.
Even that's getting over used.

Never really used twitter so not bothered. But it's funny watching the chaos. Not really sure what games he's playing on this one.

X changed to PayPal. Hence why he still owns x.com.

Being pedantic, X.com merged with PayPal in the early 00's and then eBay purchased PayPal a few years later, one of the largest sales at the time i believe, which i think is where a lot of Musk's (big) initial wealth came from (other than his parents).
I always thought he had always kept the X.com domain from the merger but supposedly he purchased it from PayPal in 2017.

Still a terrible name and idea though.

'Twitter' and 'Tweet' are part of the x-icon. Seems crazy to junk that sort of brand recognition

Fixed :p

If it quacks like a duck it's a duck right

If it tweets like a bird, it's a bird (or an X) right?

I'll be sad to see it go, but Musk owns the platform and he can do what he likes with it. There's a lot of people overreacting massively to this change.

I've never used Twitter but I also think it will be a shame to see the bird symbol go. It will be like when Royal Mail / Post Office briefly became "Consignia" and no one had the faintest on what it was.

So am i the only one who thinks of the turn based strategy game where you're a secretive international paramilitary organization defending Earth from an alien invasion.

Or even thinks it's possible that Musk sees himself as the one fighting an alien invasion.

Heard an interview with Musk a few years ago where he was going on about his "everything" app, seems to have been an obsession of his for a long time.
nothing wrong with that. i understand when you see what other countries are doing, china, india etc with 1 app to rule them all, it's understandable someone with 200billion might see a gap in the western market.

imo the silly thing is just that it's too late for that. there are many apps doing what we need and actually western markets want seperate apps to simplify and seperate their services.

i don't imagine anyone here wishes they could order pizza from twitter, but happily has their food app as a seperate food ordering specific app. and when you don't need it, you delete it, but still have your twitter app to continuing tweeting, without the mess of food ordering, taxi ordering, paying etc getting in your way.

How the person interviewing him doesn't burst out laughing is beyond me. Half the global financial system through his app   Lay off the ketamine Elon.

i don't understand. didn't that user so far up elons back side he can read elons thoughts, tell us elon wasn't interested in making money, but instead bought twitter to give free speech.

x.com doens't seem like it has anything to do with free speech...

I've said this several times before, yet apparently people still don't understand that he bought Twitter to be a platform for free speech, not because he wanted to make money out of it. He simply wants Twitter to break even in the next couple of years. He generally isn't running companies because he cares about earning money, he doesn't buy yachts or expensive cars or own a house, - I think the only lavish thing he does is have a private jet, which is for his business - yet people on here are obsessed with him losing money

it seems more likely that elon bought twitter to grab 250million users quickly, so that he could jump into this x app (using the success made by others at twitter) to jump start his x idea, which would be solely to make money.

nothing wrong with elon doing that, well there is if you are a twitter user, but what i mean nothing wrong with attempting the "x" idea, whatever it is, it's just the (what is that expression when someone makes their followers look like fools, pie in face or something like that?) that i find funny here.

Lol, this is not some grand, well thought over plan that has been in the works for years.

He's done it over a weekend, using a unicode logo and a very hastily cobbled together website change.

It seems more likely he got high/drunk over the weekend, thought he had the best idea ever, and demanded his minions make it so immediately.

idk, from what i heard about paypal, he wanted to do this a long time, even buying x.com domain back from paypal some years ago, well before twitter stupid idea came to him.

i'm not saying it's well executed nor will be a success, but i think he's had the x idea for a long time. why he felt twitter was the jump start he needed for x.com i'll never know

yes he'd already put in requests with fed for monetary transactions, so you'll be able to have a Musk credit card and loan, whether he'll also throw crypto into the pot;

apparently branding is temporary so maybe his new AI companies first act will be logo design.

It really is either another WTF decision from him, OR we're not privy to what's going on behind the scenes, of which I'm more inclined to believe in the latter.

There's currently an electric car that he built orbiting the Earth on a rocket he built, some how you find the notion of an all encompassing banking app hard to believe though

Yeah because launching a rocket and creating an app that a half the global finance system will pass through are exactly the same aren't they
