The Opteron Skt 939 Overclocking thread !!!!

To continue with my 165 story I've now managed to solve two problems with the Gigabyte K8NXP-SLI:

1) Previously I couldn't get over 290 HTT. After some research it seems there is a bug with the board which causes this. The solution turns out to be simple. Rather than step up to 290 in increments you just set everything back to stock, boot into Windows, then restart, set the HTT to 300 or whatever and boot into Windows again. Hey presto now the BIOS setting is held and you can set over 290.

2) The memory speed in the BIOS (133, 166, 200, etc...) is not an actual speed but an indication of the speed if the HTT were also set to standard 200. In other words it's a divider and memory of 200 means 1:1 and not literally 200mhz.

Now I'm flying again. Currently 2.7ghz and continuing to play :)

EDIT: The push over 290 HTT has needed a jump to 1.525v so heat could start to be a problem from now (the chip runs at 1.35v at default).

nothing fancy but Im able to SuperPI 32M at much lower voltage than yesterday (needed over 1.6v to do SP 1MB)

Very useful Hades, I'll bear that in mind if I get that high with my 144 :)

It's not quite stable in Prime at 2.7ghz yet. But at least it gives me something to play with. I also suspect my PC3200 may work in this now (must have been trying to run it waaaaay over spec last time).

My Geil PC4400 just booted into Windows at 1:1 on 300 HTT when I forgot to set the divider  Lovely memory :D

EDIT: I love playing with the low end super clocking chips. It's much more fun and rewarding than just slapping an FX in there :)

EDIT2: Oh and running a Prime torture test, having set CPU affinity on, while still being able to use the PC without noticing it is a blast :D

EDIT3: One last edit before I go to bed. I've been using the system rather than playing with it. So I haven't progressed much further on getting 2.7ghz stable in Prime. But what I have just achieved is to get my old 2x512mb PC3200 working with my 2x512mb PC4400. It's particularly satisfying because it was just some old memory I had lying around which was being unused. This system flies.

Out of interest here's my Sisoft Sandra CPU benchmark scores. I nearly choked on my baccardi when I saw (admittedly the dual core gives twice the score so an unfair advantage lol):

FX55

Dhrystone: 11175 MIPS
Whetstone/SSE2: 4126/5400 MFLOPS

Opteron 165 dual core 1mb L2 cache 290x9

Dhrystone: 22010 MIPS
Whetstone/SSE2: 8215/10697 MFLOPS

Lovin' it

That very nice Hades, fingers crossed for 2.8Ghz :D

What are people’s opinions then guys, should I go for the 144, 146 or 148.

I've heard the most success stories about the 144, its cheaper, easier to source (I think) I would be aiming for about 2.8ghz on air / water which if the results in this thread are anything to go by, its entirely possible!

Darth,

The oppys are multi locked so to get a good clock you have to up the FSB, to get a decent 2.7-2.8Ghz on a 144 for example your looking at 300-312 FSB, so yes it does ;)

These 144's have got to be one of the best overclocking chips (above stock) ever. 62% or 1.1ghz free!

To get the same % from a 148 you would need to get to nearly 3.6ghz !

I'm sure mine will go further with better cooling and a little hike in voltage too.

Also seems that the AS5 is bedding in as load temps are now around 50c as opposed to 53c yesterday. Room temp is the same.

Still want a CABNE 148 , just wish I could a, afford one and b, could find one. :(

I'm almost tempted to put my water cooling kit back into use!
It hasn’t be used since my days of buying upteen P4 2.8-3.2Ghz chips and overclocking the pants out of them. To ensure maximum stability at such high clocks especially during summer I'm thinking it may be needed. But then again, 50 odd at load isn’t very high, my workstation has a prescott and idles at 49 deg

Kesnel have you got one of these beautys? or one on the way?

I'm tempted to go for one soon but dunno how they are on phase

Mine is (hopefully) on the way as we speak. :D

It's coming from the states, so I expect it to be here by Tuesday, then when I visit home next weekend I should be able to share some clocks. :)

from the states? that could get expensive.
always import from the eu, you already pay tax so customs dont get you like the do from the states

even so, if customs sniff it you wil pay vat + handling charge + another delivery charge adding quite abit extra to it. if you ever get anything from there, always make sure its sent as a gift as theres a slight chance it'll slip through :)

good luck with it btw, hope your lucky :D
