The Opteron Skt 939 Overclocking thread !!!!

ah sounds good :)

can't wait for my 148 now... just waiting for the stock to arrive in OcUK, although i fear when i get my AMD system up and running in about a month or two, the hype around these Opterons may have died down.

still, i'll know that i'll be running a kick ass rig, with an awesome CPU for practically pennies compared to others :)

After playing with mine i can go to 2800Mhz on 1.42volts on my Asrock but think it needs more juice wich i can not give it without voltmod it to get 1.5+ , but what is best on this cpu 144 opterons, A higher clock or high HTT as you can get.
Reson i am asking is this min i am running at 325HTT x 8 with my ram sitting at 217mhz allmost maxed out (Geil value ram 2Gb Kit ) but cpu only at 2600mhz , but system fell so must faster this way or is that just me

High HTT isn't going to increase performance unless it's in order to get your RAM speed up.

Things are more likely to be unstable at high HTTs as some motherboards stuggle with these. See what you can do with it on a 9x multi. :)

Was doing some more testing yesterday with my 148 CABYE...

3.0Ghz - 300htt x 10 at 1.60v - super pi 1M at 28.1 secs, not 32M stable but it still sat and played gta: sa for over an hour at that speed.

3.1Ghz - 310htt x 10 at 1.65v - not completing super pi now at all, but is 3d stable. 3dMark '01 with graphics card still at stock - 32488. :D Again it will cope with games fine, sat and played gta:sa for another hour at this speed.

Ram timings are 2.5,4,4,8 using 2.8v. Cpu temp was always under 40deg c, idleing at around 35c.

I've got a 146 arriving today too, not sure of stepping yet tho.

but i thought you ram speed in A64 did not matter to much or am i wrong here. So whould i be better getting ram wich can clock to high speed ?

On the (9X i can go upto this ) http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc.php?id=45560 but just need a bit more juice can not do Prime95 ,but S & M fine ?
And that is only with 1.42Volt but i am doing a modd to board today to gian more juice for cpu

RAM speed doesn't matter in the bandwidth sense as on the P4s, however faster RAM speeds are still going to give you an improvement.

If your RAM is capable of running past DDR400, then it would be in your interest to push it up to that. However, you shouldn't really sacrifice CPU speed greatly for this.

This is where tweaking gets complex; finding the settings that will get the most out of your CPU and RAM.

Another update.

Have gotten my pair of 2x256 sticks of RAM out so as not to stress the mem controller too much, and can now get 3.35Ghz on 1.6v.

A warning to anyone who is considering putting these under phase or any other intense sub zero cooling: The cold bug makes the mem controller very weak at these temps, it's not my RAM that is at fault I've tried all three of my 2x512 pairs and none will go over 220mhz. 2x256 is going to be your best bet for any sort of benches, unfortunately my set don't clock well, so it's still running on a DDR200 divider.

Also, if the CPU is sitting idle at these temps it will crash. So SP2004 needs to be run on low priority doing small FTTs in the background to load the CPU when nothing else is.

It's a shame really as I know the chip will be good for more, it's merely the cold bug holding it back. :(

Can't you add some more volts to warm it up, I think people are to scared of volts my rigs are always flat out, my 2500XP is 2.0v on air from a 1.45v stock, runs all day long without any hassle whatsoever.

Sure over 5-10 years its life will be shortened, but it will be very much superseeded by then.

What are your idle and load temps like ?

lol... I personally know several people including myself that have killed CPU's through too much voltage. It is naieve to say the least to think that pushing extreme voltage (beyond the regular boundaries) into a CPU using regular air-cooling is safe.

Many CPU's die as a result, and it is always best to set a limit to the voltage you stick into one.

If I could put more volts through it I would. That seems to help the mem controller a lot and pushes the clocks up. However, my max vocore on this board is 1.7v (which is more like 1.68v as it undervolts slightly).

I may attempt a vcore mod tomorrow and try some more.

Just had a rather scarey moment.

I've put my 146 back onto air for a while, only to find it wouldn't boot.

BIOS bleeps indicated a RAM error, so I took one stick out and it booted ok. Now, I began to think I'd damaged the memory controller, as it refused to boot with two sticks in any configuration.

I tried different RAM it sitll wouldn't go.

Anyway, I put my 3700+ back in and it still wouldn't boot in dual channel. So it looks like I've damanged my mobo somehow (I was due for an upgrade anyway ;))

anyone in the north Wales area willing to test a cabne 148 out for me can not get this thing over 2600 even with 1.7 volts tried a diff psu and mem still no go :( on my dfi

A bit late, but.................

148 CABYE ~ Koolance Exos II water cooling.

2800MHz ~ 16 hour Prime stable (no errors) 1.5v

2950MHz ~ S&M Stable 1.58v

3000MHz ~ SuperPi 1M (28s) Stable 1.64v

3055MHz ~ SuperPi 1M (27s) Stable 1.66v

Roll on Friday, I have a 148 CABNE from the first batch arriving! :D

Only downside is my G.Skill LA seems to be allergic to these Opterons! :(
