The Opteron Skt 939 Overclocking thread !!!!

matt1, thanks for the link.

Shouldn't running Prime totally slow my PC down (to the point of being unusable)? Because it isn't no matter which setting I try and even if I set priority to high in task manager...

Cheers,

Suman

Are you getting 100% CPU usage with blend?

If not then its allocating too much memory and paging, which slows prime to a crawl, either update to the latest version of prime, or do it manually select blend, then goto custom and allocate about 50Mbs less than your free RAM, that should get things going.

i think my temps are a little high 40 idle 50 under load on stock volts with 260x10 =2.6ghz .i have reseated the cpu twice but still get same results (that is with artic co0ler 64)do you think they are a little high for stock volts ?

Yeah it's using 100% of the CPU, but the system still feels responsive  slightly slower than normal, but nowhere near enough to make me think that CPU is being streseed to the limit...

I'm using Prime95 64bit edition 24.14 btw (latest version I think).

Cheers,

Suman

Running prime 95 doesnt exclude the use of other programs. 100% cpu utilitization is 100%, if that means 99% prime and 1% for browsing or watching a video, still adds up to 100%.

The way to tell prime 95 is working is how hot your cpu is getting.

The Akasa Evo 33 does good job is keeping my 146 under 40C load, plus its venting the hot air straight out the back of the case which has brought temps down a degree or two.

anyone else have this heatsink (Akasa Evo 33)? If so, what temps are you getting on idle and load, also what clock speed is the cpu set at?

cheers

I'm considering getting one of these for my Opteron. :)

Akasa evo 120 here keeps temps to 50c load with 1.612v @ 3ghz on a naked Opteron 146 :D

Sounds like the problem I had with bad IHS contact. I removed the IHS and fitted the Akasa which enabled me to run more volts to stabilize the cpu @ 3ghz with temps no higher than 50c under prime. I still don't run this 24/7 (chicken) but there is no noticable speed difference between 2.8ghz (current @ 1.45v) and 3ghz 1.612v.

My final result with the evo 33 is 35C idle and 44C load with the cpu at 2.8Ghz and the vcore at 1.55v. Great cooler imo :D

Just recieved my 146 this morning - its a CACJE0546. Any idea how these will perform (with air.. only really want 2.6 out of it). Seems everyone here has different cpus.

i darn't go any higher yet till i have got those temps down a little {chicken } is it hard to remove ihs ? :)

Seen someone get this stepping 146 to 2.8GHz on 1.6v so 2.6GHz should be do-able on a lot lower volts. :)

@ Nightic The last time I read a review of an aircooled TEC cpu cooling device, it wasnt any better than a plain air cooler. There is a good reason for this too. The TEC or any kind of super cooling brings with it lots of inefficiency.

Not quite sure what you're referring to - the Vapochill Micro heatsink is just a regular heatsink, albeit with a heatpipe, there are no TEC or sub-ambient technologies involved.

Not a hard job but you need to be extremely careful doing it. It is really easy to bend the pins on the cpu as you hold it to cut through the rubbery textured goo they use to fix the IHS in place. There is an exellent guide (sticky) at the top of the cpu page of the forum complete with pictures. The IHS is such a tight fit to the cpu board that even a razor blade can be a tight fit so some pressure is required on the blade as you work it around. Could end up with a nasty cut too if you slipped!

im a newbie to overlcocking but can i ask how exactly do u no if your system is sunstable , do i run testes liekt eh stress test in prime etc and then what am i looking for and how long should i test for? 1 other thign how do i unlock the multiplyer feature and is thsi essential.

That's a more than safe temperature! I've got my CABYE 0540 at 2800 default volts but it sits at about 50oC most of the time - I do get the feeling either the temp readings wrong or my heatsink needs reseating though :D

Safe.. hard to say, but generally if you are hitting max load temp of 50.C I wouldn't worry, 37.C is certainly ok imo. I believe if you are going above 50.C I'd back off just to be safe, good rule of thumb with the socket 939 stuff. My old Opteron 146 hit 50-52.C under load and was perfectly happy, and I'd run that 24/7 without worrying.
