****The Playstation 3 Slim Thread****

Why remove the touch sensation surface and add old fashioned buttons?

You aint going to nit pick at something like this are you? It didn't even pass my mind to even think about the difference. I really couldn't care less.

All I want them to do is change the BD remote from starting the PS3 by pressing any button. So friggin annoying I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've accidentally turned the PS3 on with the BD remote.:mad:

PS3 Slim is now £229.99 at my favourite place. Seriously tempted to swap out my 60GB.

Crazy they are already dropping prices and it is 11 days till release.

Probably a silly question, but how do you charge the wireless controllers:confused:

Mini USB cable. Any will do. I use the one that came with my iPod as its long enough. The length of the one that comes with the DS3 is a joke.

or get a charger stand.

Maybe becasue these are less expensive and many people didnt like the feel of the old ones. It was quite easy to switch on the PS3/eject disk when you was cleaning it, and when you was doing the soft resets it was a bit hit or miss if you was pushing it down enough as there is no tactile response from the old buttons. The old buttons was cool i guess, but these seem more functional.

Aslo the it has been confirmed that the PS3 Slim bit streams Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10314795-1.html
We've covered just about everything you need to know about the PS3 Slim, but the sleuths over at Engadget HD (via a translated version of AV Watch) found a chart that indicates the PS3 Slim can bit stream both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. That change actually isn't that surprising, since the original limitation on the "old" PS3s was due to an older HDMI chipset; newer HDMI outputs have no problem bit streaming the high-resolution soundtrack formats.

We have a PS3 Slim review sample onhand, so it was easy to confirm the rumor. We had the PS3 Slim connected to the Sony STR-DN1000 receiver via HDMI, and we loaded up "Appaloosa," which as a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. After making a few tweaks in the XMB, were able to make the STR-DN1000's display say "Dolby TrueHD"--confirmation that the Slim was sending the soundtrack in encoded bit stream format. Next, we loaded up "Master and Commander," which has a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack, and that worked as well.

Unfortunately, the practical benefit of this feature upgrade is minimal. The "fat" PS3 could transmit Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio in uncompressed linear PCM format, providing the exact same audio quality as the bit stream versions. There are some cases where an AV receiver may process linear PCM differently than bit stream, but its rare. On the other hand, it's at least nice to have the option, especially for those guys who just have to see the words "DTS-HD Master Audio" light up on their AV receiver.

Even though I think the fatter one is in a different league looks-wise (i.e it's nicer) I ended up pre-ordering a slim. I'm banking on the lower power consumption and less heat/noise factor. Hopefully it won't cost me that much to 'upgrade' having sold off my PS3.

I'd forgotten how much heat the phat PS3 belts out. I have been playing Xbox for the last month and noticed no temperature increase but my room was like a sauna after playing PS3 last night.

As someone just said, plug it into the PS3 using the USB lead or sometimes I plug it into the PC USB port and it will charge that way.

Exactly why I pre-ordered the slim. The PS3 does tend to belt out the heat although when I have had an Xbox, it's been the same scenario.

I assume you have one of the new (and presumably smaller) chipsets?
