****The Playstation 3 Slim Thread****

Surely thats more to do with your friends than the console?

Most of my mates got a PS3 on my reccomendation and then when I got a 360, I felt the same as you did and sold it in the end.

it still makes XBL the better experience for me does it not?

but also that statement was added on as an extra if you will

Yep, but you made the comment in reference to being asked why you thought PSN was ****. ;)

'then there is the fact that very few people i know have a PS3 making the PS3 gaming experience lonely at best.'

i stated reasons for why i find PSN crap, the then added another ('then there is the fact') personal reason (subjective, rather than objective) but also a factor that will make it worse for some people, if the PS3 user base were bigger then PSN would be better, it's as simple as that.

what part of that don't you get?

I think it would have been better if you said that you felt it was crap rather than it just was crap. You are obviously entitled to your opinion but it's more likely to get others with differing opinions riled up if you state it as fact. I'm sure you didn't deliberately do so or even feel like you have but hey ho just trying to help bring this thread back on topic :)

On the on topic side of things. I'm still confused. Surely if sony were hell bent on cost cutting wouldn't implementing the 45nm cells in the current cases still be cheaper than shrinking it all and sticking it in a smaller case? I mean, if they had to shrink the bluray drive and PSU surely they would cost more to produce? A smaller PS3 is nice and all but every analyst under the sun has made it very clear that Sony NEED to drop the price very soon in order to boost sales.

i still feel my first 2 reasons are very valid at an objective level, which makes a far less polished experience and to me, as i'm sure others, those factors are no small thing

perhaps the cost of the normal sized units will decrease and these will assume the current price point?

Obviously differs then as I'd say I have definitely encountered more lag on Live as a lot of the main PS games have dedicated servers. I agree on the headset quality it use to be terrible but with the official headset out now it has definitely picked up a lot. Own'd both consoles from the start pretty much so directly comparing Live use to be miles better but its generally pretty hard to notice much difference now apart from the P2P on Live and lack of party chat on PSN.

Just a small addition, but seamless cross game invites is the other XBL feature of note.. and possibly the globally well integrated and consistent achievements.

I do agree that for free PSN is very good..

But the extra freedom of XBL does make for a much easier interaction with your mates, and the fact it's all so seamless no matter what you are doing is the only real key differentiator, if that is important to you of course..

Yea cross-game invites would deffo be a worthy addition though I always pre-arrange to play games with mates so we will always be in a lobby which is done in-game. It is so much easier to arrange games with cross-game chat though which PSN really needs. Another benefit of Live is the game info, Its much better when you have have a game in the drive and all details and downloads etc. are brought up for it automatically, PSN needs something like that. Apart from that though Ive noticed less lag on PSN and it's free. Trophies are more intergrated now as well.

They should open up a load of dedicated server farms for games like COD and then you pay a subscription fee to use them.

Back ON TOPIC :p

This is pretty interesting news - I find it amusing how people have brushed it off as fake when the pictures are quite convincing (and not obvious fakes). 45nm Cell and RSX would mean pretty substantial power savings, and together with a slim Blu-ray drive that case size is very workable.

Looking forward to getting one of these to replace my noisy 60GB launch consoles

Cheers,

Suman

Read that sony lose $40 on every ps3 sold, with a slim ps3 sony might break even/make a profit.

I wonder what Sony's strategy will be..

Clearly they are almost certainly losing a reasonably degree on each console presently, and are reluctant to drop the price. Will a PS3 slim allow for a price drop?, or considering the losses Sony made in 2008, would they use any cost saving as extra profit, and screw us customers? If they could get the PS3 down to £175 I'm sure that would really start the ball rolling!

so pics 1,3 & 4 are just the lid right? 5 being the bottom?

Looks not too bad tbh, much better than the glossy bread bin current owners have got now. Saying that if they drop the current versions prices due to this i might buy one though the slim is looking good if true.

Someone has photo-shopped elements of the original pictures together to try and give you an idea of what it may look like put together.

Cool - looks pretty fugly tbh, but could look prettier in gloss (or various colours).

At the very least it needs some silver trim!
