****The Playstation 3 Slim Thread****

Cool - looks pretty fugly tbh, but could look prettier in gloss (or various colours).

At the very least it needs some silver trim!

I think those things that are missing are the best bits about it! :D

The photoshop job looks a bad one mind, hoping its better looking than that.

I don't think this has been posted in here.

So it's not slim, so much as it is mini? I prefer the matte to the glossy plastic to be honest - it looks like there's nothing to it though. Possibly because it's just the case...

If that pic is real then that is a significant reduction in size, although its still bulky, probably, as people have already noted in this thread, because of the heatsink/fan/airflow required.

I can imagine Sony upping the price of this from the current PS3 and people will opt for the mini, just because it looks like it takes up much less room.

So, we're going with this being real, then? I find it hard to believe considering the costs of manufacturing the current PS3 still aren't profitable, let alone cramming it all into a smaller case.

/hasn't read entire thread.

in the thread its explained how doing the slimmer one would be cheaper. 45nm Cell being cheaper to produce than the 65nm cell, that being the main cost.

Ill sum it up for you (and others) as i see it
45Nm CPU/GPU for PS3 less heat low power consumptition, this leads to a smaller lighter PSU and cooling fans. With the reduction in size say 25% less than the original means less plastic for the case, smaller box to ship console in. Smaller and lighter means Sony can ship more PS3s per carton/boat etc or reduce the amount of shipments for the same amount off consoles. All these lead to a cost reduction to Sony to not only make the PS3s but to get them were they are required to be ie shops. Even with say a $40 loss per console (supposed to be about 10% retail price) if each owner purchases another controller and a couple of games Sony will have made more than that back again.
Reduce current PS3 price to $300/ £200 to clear current stock introduce PS3 slim october time for a bit more money say £250/$350 with perhaps a bigger HDD then reduce price to £200 in 2010 when old stock has gone or sometime in 2010 ( to make news again).

Your missing on the big points it cost money to change production and do R&D for smaller version.

I'm pretty sure R&D will have been done already, and would have cost no more for a PS3 slim than what ever else they would have been looking into.

Change in production however I agree with, New machines for mass production would cost yes
